The audiobook has the major advantage that Kirt Graves' performance is beyond stellar and I believe it was the one thing that fully pulled me in in the first place. The book starts off with such an interesting premise and good humour but I never felt like I grew any closer with any of the characters but instead simply observed their actions as a mere bystander with no emotional involvement. Maybe that's why I also felt like the ending was too predictable from the very start and would've wished for an more tragic conclusion for more emotional impact?

Wow gegen Ende fand ich’s doch toll! Am Anfang war ich abgeschreckt von dem schlechten Humor und den überzogenen Charakteren, aber es hat’s geschafft, mich entertaint zu halten! Richtig abgeholt hat es mich aber doch nicht… vor allem weil ich bei dem Thema Tod etwas mehr Tiefe erwarte.

It’s crazy how a book can make you think about life and death on a whole new level. Although death is sad and filled with grief for the living, this book made me realize that it can also be something beautiful (obviously depending on the circumstance). Definitely a book worth reading!!!!

Dieses Buch wird mir lange in Erinnerung bleiben. Die Geschichte startet langsam, nimmt aber immer mehr an Fahrt und Dramatik auf. Die Protagonist *innen sind sehr fein und divers gezeichnet und wachsen schnell ans Herz. Der Schreibstil ist flüssig und man rutscht nur so durch die Seiten. Die Thematik ist wichtig und doch mit viel Feingefühl und Humor aufgearbeitet. Einfach wundervoll.

Ein weiteres wundervolles Werk von TJ Klune. Ausserdem ein sehr persönliches, wie es im Nachwort heisst. Und das spürt man auch. So viel Wärme und Liebe sind in diesem Buch vorhanden. Mir persönlich hat The House In The Cerulean Sea besser, was daran lag, dass mir persönlich die Türe oftmals etwas zu kitschig wurde. Ich mag Klunes Aussage sehr, dass es nie zu spät ist, sich zu verändern, und auch die Liebesgeschichte ist berührend und glaubhaft dargestellt. Trotzdem wurde es für mich persönlich dann manchmal doch zu viel des Guten. Ansonsten ist das Buch für mich ebenso grossartig wie das Meer. Ein fast perfekter Mix aus Tiefgründigkeit, Humor und ernsten Themen - ein Buch wie aus dem Leben gegriffen, nur dass manche Protagonisten tot sind. Nun bin ich auch neugierig auf Klunes andere Bücher und hoffe, bald wieder etwas von ihm lesen zu können.

When we first decided to read this in our book club i was hesitant. I was expecting a melancholic, sad story which tried to be deep, especially around death. Lucky for us it isn't! I laughed, i cried and i felt all emotions mixed in a cozy cocktail. I loved it all, the journey, the beginning, the end and even if it was predictable, i still got hit like a truck with all the feels. 🫠 Personally haven't dealt with losing a loved one but this gave me hope, that it's going to be alright and i do wish that when we die, we end up with someone like Hugo & Mei. 🫂 Honestly if you like reading something comforting this is for you! 💙 They missed the opportunity to sell this book with matching box of tissues! 5/5 🌟

I only ever read one book of this author (The House in the Cerulean Sea) before and I absolutely loved that one. In comparison, „Under the Whispering Door“ wasn’t as compelling as „Cerulean Sea“, but it’s well written, has a slow but steady story progression and believable, lovable characters (obviously some more than others). The fantasy behind it is a good mix of known stuff with „twists“/new ideas and the story also brings quite a lot of good humour into the otherwise rather depressing topic of death/acceptance of death. This whole book could have been either depressing or over the top positive, but it was neither. It dealt with this serious topic in a somewhat neutral but never ignorant manner and talked about the good and the bad of it.

Eine wunderschöne Liebesgeschichte nicht nur auf romantische Art und Weise, sondern auch ganz ohne körperliche Intimität, die wichtige Themen des Lebens wirklich sinnvoll und erwärmend beleuchtet. Es gibt einem einfach auf mitreißende Art und Weise eine ganz besondere und unumgängliche Sichtweise mit auf den Weg.

Lange hat mich kein Buch mehr gleichzeitig so zum Lachen und zum Weinen gebracht 😊 Es hat eine Weile gedauert um reinzukommen und hätte für mich zu Beginn auch etwas schneller erzählt sein können, vielleicht musste ich aber auch einfach die gleiche Lektion wie Wallace zu Beginn lernen, nämlich den Dingen ihre Zeit zu geben :D Insgesamt liebe ich einfach den Schreibstil und Humor von T.J. Klune, also auf jeden Fall eine Empfehlung :)

I'm a bit unsure about this one. I guess after "The house in the Cerulean sea" my hopes were a tad too high. The first half dragged along so slowly that I even considered giving up reading. Also, honestly, as much as I love a good fairytale - the changes the main character Wallace is undergoing are faaaar from being realistic... It's just too much. The main plot (that is also mentioned in the book's description) is happening in the second half. And yeah, I had tears streaming down my face more often than once. Happy tears, sad tears, frustrated tears. The whole spectrum. Which is the one reason I love TJ Klune's books. They give me all. the. feels.

In "Under the Whispering Door" findet sich der gefühlskalte, unbeliebte Anwalt Wallace Price nach seinem Tod erst auf seiner eigenen Beerdigung und dann in einem Teeladen wieder. Der Fährmann Hugo und die anderen Bewohner des ungewöhnlichen Hauses erklären ihm, dass das Teil seiner Reise ins Jenseits ist. Doch dazu ist Wallace eigentlich noch gar nicht bereit und so beginnt er im Tod sein Leben umzukrempeln... Mir hat dieses Buch richtig gut gefallen! Spannendes Konzept vom "Leben nach dem Tod", gemütliches Setting und so liebenswürdige Charaktere. Außerdem viele interessante, tiefgehende, philosophische Gedanken, die zum Nachdenken über ernste Themen anregen. Natürlich kommen in diesem Buch viele traurige Szenen vor, die einen ziemlich mitnehmen können. Daneben gibt es aber auch viele lustige Situationen und gerade diese Mischung mochte ich gerne. Zum Highlight hat es für mich persönlich dennoch nicht ganz gereicht. Vorallem im Vergleich zu "Mr. Parnassus´ Heim für Magisch Begabte" hat mich "Under the Whispering Door" nicht ganz so begeistern können und ich hab das Buch nicht so sehr 'gefühlt'. Das kann aber auch daran liegen, dass ich das Buch auf Englisch gelesen habe, und nicht wie Mr. Parnassus auf Deutsch und es mir so generell immer etwas schwerer fällt, in ein Buch rein zu kommen. Das nächste TJ Klune-Buch werde ich daher wahrscheinlich wieder auf Deutsch lesen und ich freue mich schon auf die nächste Geschichte des Autors! 4,5/5⭐️

If you came here after "The House in the Cerulean Sea" (like I did, because I couldn’t move on … unless it was with a book by the same author that was, in fact, all about moving on), you’ll like it as well. Personally, there are still a few things I want to point out: You’ll definitely feel like this is written by T.J. Klune, who takes you by the hand as you walk the lines between reality and imagination. What is real and what isn’t? Why does it matter? The author takes a humorous play on what we know and don’t know about the afterlife, without giving any definite answers. But. Since this is a book that ponders, there will be pondering. There isn’t a lot of moving forward. There isn’t a lot of looking back either. This isn’t like "The Gift" by Cecelia Ahern or "A Christmas Carol." Of course that’s part of necessary closure, but overall, think of it more as looking forward and contemplating the present. That also means that Wallace, and we as the reader, spend a good part of the book kind of living, unsure of what’s next. Yes, there are things happening, but if you came here specifically after "The House in the Cerulean Sea," you’ll notice a difference in the pacing of the story. Linus’ time on the island was always limited, and there are children who unexpectedly run interference in his well laid-out plans. Here, it feels like living in a house, wondering why the other residents are there. Which, ironically, is part of what it’s about. The one-week-deadline is only set when we are already well underway in the story, so it feels a bit like wondering around a museum of the afterlife, trying to take something worthwhile away but ultimately just remembering a lot of wandering.

Das Buch spitzt das Sprichwort "jedes Ende ist ein neuer Anfang" auf eindrucksvolle Weise zu. Es erzählt die Geschichte von Wallace Price, der erst nach seinem Tod anfängt, zu begreifen, was das Leben für ihn wirklich wertvoll macht und dabei nach und nach aus seinen Fehlern lernt. Wie schon in "The house in the cerulean sea" begleitet man TJ Klunes Hauptfigur hautnah bei seiner Charakterentwicklung. Zwar ist das Setting "Tod" durchaus ein schweres Thema, für mich ist es dem Autor aber gut gelungen, düsteren Stellen immer wieder Lichtblicke gegenüber zu stellen.

Giving this only 4 stars, because more than the first half couldn’t quite catch me. The further I got to the end, feelings bloomed and the more I fell in love with the characters, the overall feeling and especially the messages. The last few chapters where everything. Gotta love TJ Klune books.

Wie geht man mit einem Verlust um ? Schwere Themen eingepackt in eine behagliche und flauschige Decke mit Tee, Scones und liebenswerten Charakteren.

I was drawn to Under the Whispering Door because I thought it would be a full blown queer love story between a ghost and some sort of angel? I don't know why I thought that would be the case but it is what it is. TJ Klune, the author, is also openly queer and it felt great to read work from a member of the LGBT community. What happens after death is a very intimate subject. We spend practically our entire life sporadically learning about it and pondering what it would be like to die and what happens after. There are limitless ways to imagine this that for me, no way is ever fully satisfying or comprehensive enough, even my own ideas. The subject is an eternal enigma. So, in books like this it's best not to think about it too much - the physics, the logic, the rules. How about the message of this book? Well I didn't get anything at all. Anything that stuck that is. Felt like I was reading a collection of Hallmark cards or watching an unlicensed YouTuber give me psychological advise/inspiration (?)/grief counseling This is the sort of book I just do not enjoy. But by no means is it trashbin bad. There is stuff to like with UTWD. First of all, the characters. They are charming and very diverse that Netflix would blush. They are clearly defined, alive and individually fascinating. I practically liked everybody. Second is the humor and how light it is all throughout. Reading the book is like watching an ensemble sit-com. As for the plot, I did not get the love story I thought I would be getting. It just perculated in the background until near the end. This story is about second chances, acceptance and building a family. There is romance, yes. But it felt somewhat random and forced in development. I know I wouldn't comment on the technicalities but... this is a universe where you could technically die (?) twice and be a zombie thingy after death(?) I guess that's creative (?) And the gravity of a reward (?) at the end did not feel earned or justified at all given how absolutely special it is. I'm giving this book a 2/5 because it served nothing new. It's like a hollow, new-agey philosophy book. I can't even count the number of times I dozed of while reading it and that's with my acknowledging that this is light and breezy. Read this while listening to the audiobook. That Hugo voice was sexy though! Just want to add that inspite of my low rating that I totally recommend this book specially if you enjoy things that deal with spirituality etc.
