I wouldn't have finished this if it weren't for English class. I was going to give this a 3, but that felt too generous, so I bumped it down to a 2. Things got more interesting around chapter 15/16, hence the current 3, but if I have to wait more than halfway for a book to get more interesting, it isn't super great... Mark was more annoying than anything. Maybe this was just me.

I absolutely loved The Martian—and while I really enjoyed the movie, the book took everything to another level. It's a hugely entertaining novel that blends science, suspense, and humor in a way that's completely addictive. Mark Watney is an incredibly funny and relatable character. His sarcasm, optimism, and sheer stubbornness make him the perfect guide through this wild ride of a survival story. You’ll be rooting for him the entire time, groaning at every new setback and celebrating every hard-earned success like it’s your own. I genuinely laughed out loud multiple times, and despite all the technical detail, I was never bored for a second. In fact, I enjoyed the math and science—Weir makes it accessible and fun. As someone who already adored Project Hail Mary, I honestly can't decide which book I love more—both are phenomenal reads. Andy Weir’s humor and voice are so strong that at this point, I’d honestly read Andy Weir’s grocery list if he published it. Highly recommended for science geeks, space lovers, and anyone who enjoys a smart, funny, and heartfelt adventure. In short: The Martian is smart, funny, gripping, and inspiring. If you haven’t read it yet, you’re missing out on one of the most fun reads in modern sci-fi.

Nicht nur wimmelt es im Internet von begeisterten Rezensionen zu diesem Buch, sondern auch der Film hat mir sehr gut gefallen, sodass ich mir seither wünschte, das Original kennenzulernen. Endlich hat auch dies geklappt und, so Leid es mir tut, ich muss mich wohl den positiven Stimmen anschliessen. Mehr und mehr komme ich auf den Geschmack von Sci-Fi und Andy Weir beweist, woher das "Science" in "Science-Fiction" kommt. Davon können sich einige Autoren etwas abschneiden, die eher "Science-Fantasy" schreiben. Weir dagegen kommt mit der gesamten Palette der Wissenschaft daher und ich konnte nur staunen, wie detailliert und (laut Nachwort) fundiert der Autor Mark Watneys Taten auf dem Mars beschreibt. Es ist ein sehr technisches Buch, dennoch wirkt es nicht trocken, sondern faszinierend und begeisternd. Man spürt Andy Weirs eigene Begeisterung für die Wissenschaft auf jeder Seite, in jedem Satz. Es ist eine wahre Freude, Watney zu beobachten, wie er für jedes Problem eine Lösung findet. Ich habe manchmal Mühe damit, einen Dosenöffner zu verwenden... Auch durch die Perspektivenwechsel schafft es Weir, den Leser stets bei der Stange zu halten. Der Hauptteil der Geschichte erzählt Watney selbst durch sein Logbuch. Dabei kommt der Humor Watneys (oder Weirs, da er seinen Charakter stark nach sich selbst geformt hat) immer wieder zum Tragen und als Leser kann man nur staunen, wie er all diese Schicksalsschläge aushält. Wir als Leser haben aber nebenher noch die Möglichkeit, einen Blick in die Zentrale der NASA zu werfen und den Genies dort über die Schulter zu sehen. Ebenfalls gefielen mir jene Abschnitte gut, in denen Andy Weir auf kleine technische Details zielt, die im Verlauf des Abschnittes etwas tun, das den Verlauf der Geschichte ändert. Ich bin tief beeindruckt von diesem Buch und ertappte mich oft dabei, mir zu wünschen, ich könnte weiterlesen anstatt das zu tun, was ich in dem Moment tat (meistens arbeiten). Aufgrund der vielen guten Meinungen dazu hatte ich bestimmt schon hohe Erwartungen an "The Martian", dennoch hat Andy Weir diese mit seinem Roman noch übertroffen. Es war eine grossartige Lektüre und nun bin ich gespannt darauf, Weirs neues Buch "Artemis" für mich zu entdecken.

Ich habe diesmal erst den Film gesehen und danach das Buch gelesen und ausnahmsweise muss ich sagen: Das Buch ist nicht besser als der Film, sondern der Film genauso gut wie das Buch. Großartig umgesetzt. Und obwohl ich die Story schon kannte und wusste, was passiert, war es superspannend zu lesen.

4.25⭐️ Andy Weir has done it again, and nobody does it quite like him. To be fair, it’s probably a felony to read this AFTER project Hail Mary, but anyways here we are. Another great space adventure full of love and character. I do have to take off some of the stars because I personally found Mark Watney to be slightly annoying and over the top quirky, but that’s just personal preference. Everything else was great as always!

This was really an extraordinary book. I read it during my flights on the weekend, so probably as close as I can ever get to Mark's situation ;) I liked the writing style and that everything that happened seemed so real and well researched. I can understand that the author couldn't get more detailed to have the book still be read by a broad audience but at some points I imagined that a real astronaut might make log entries slightly different in a more technical language. But definitely a book I enjoyed very much.

Niemand weiß, dass er noch lebt, und selbst, wenn er sich bemerkbar machen könnte, wäre eine mögliche Rettung Jahre entfernt. Scheint aussichtslos. Doch statt aufzugeben, nutzt Watney seine botanischen und technischen Kenntnisse, um zu überleben. Erst mal. Es beginnt ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit. "Project Hail Mary" war mein Jahreshighlight 2023, sowohl als Hörbuch, als auch insgesamt. Natürlich wollte ich Andy Weirs berühmten, aufwendig verfilmten Erstling auch noch lesen. Und als ich durch Wil Wheatons Autobiografie erfuhr, dass dieser das Buch eingelesen hatte, griff ich auch hier zum Hörbuch. Auch wenn "The Martian" nicht ganz an die Genialität der Audioversion von "Project Hail Mary" herankommt, hat mir auch dieser technisch anspruchsvolle Sci-Fi-Roman ganz hervorragend gefallen. Es war faszinierend, Watneys fantastische Überlebensstrategien und Problemlösungen zu verfolgen. Im Laufe des Buches erfahren dann auch, was auf der Erde und in dem Raumschiff und mit der Crew passiert, mit dem bzw. der Watney zum Mars gelangte. Ob Mark Watney gerettet werden kann, bleibt beinahe bis zur letzten Minute offen. Das macht das Buch mitunter schier unerträglich spannend. Jedes Mal, wenn die Narration plötzlich in die 3. Person wechselte, fühlte ich mich förmlich erblassen, weil ich ahnte, dass jetzt wieder etwas schief gegangen sein musste. Es gibt katastrophale Rückschläge, doch Mark Watneys Persönlichkeit zeichnet sich durch einen Optimismus aus, der wohl als Grundvoraussetzung für die pure Möglichkeit, zu überleben, betrachtet werden kann. Andy Weir beeindruckt außerdem mit seinem wissenschaftlichem und technischen Wissen, zumindest aus meiner Sicht als Laiin hatten Weirs Ausführungen stets eine solide wissenschaftliche Basis. Ganz tolles Buch. Die Verfilmung ist auch gelungen, jedoch in der Schilderung von Watneys Problemlösungsstrategien stark verkürzt. Ich bin wirklich gespannt, was Andy Weir uns als Nächstes vorlegt. Wil Wheaton punktet als Sprecher insbesondere, wenn er Marks Passagen liest. Er passt auch mit seinem ganzen Hintergrund und seiner Art ganz wunderbar in die Rolle. Tatsächlich stutzte ich beim Anschauen des Films des Öfteren, weil ich Wil Wheaton als Mark Watney im Sinn hatte (sorry, Matt Damon, hast deinen Job auch super gemacht). Die sonstigen Passagen des Buches fand ich nicht ganz so überzeugend vorgetragen. In jedem Fall hat das Hörbuch großen Spaß gemacht.

It's been a long time since I've seen a woman. Just sayin'. Anyway, to ensure I don't crash again, I'll - Seriously ... no women in like, years. I don't ask for much. Believe me, even back on Earth a botanist/mechanical engineer doesn't exactly have ladies lined up at the door. But still, c'mon. p. 318 Ich hatte natürlich von dem Buch gehört, weil es einen Film gibt, und so ungefähr mit "Mann strandet auf Mars und bleibt dort allein zurück und das ergibt einen ganzen Blockbuster" hörte mein Wissen auch schon auf. Ich konnte mir nicht vorstellen, wie ich ein ganzes Buch über einen einzelnen Charakter auf dem Mars lesen und mögen würde, aber genau das habe ich getan. Der Hauptgrund ist die Erzählstimme, die in Watneys humorvollem, trockenen Ton von seinen Tagen auf dem Mars berichtet. Zwar gibt es auch Szenen aus anderen Sichten, etwa der restlichen Mars-Crew oder aus dem Kontrollzentrum der NASA, aber Watney hält das Buch am Leben und ließ mich die gesamten Seiten über mitfiebern, wie er das nächste Hindernis überlebt, das sich ihm in den Weg stellt. Es war spannend, und selbst für einen Technik-Dummie wie mich nicht zu viel Input. Keine Gewähr also, dass das, was er da oben getan hat, wissenschaftlich überhaupt möglich ist, aber für mich taten diese Stellen dem Lesevergnügen keinen Abbruch. Es stärkte nur meine Bewunderung für Astronauten und mein Kopfkino über einstige All-Kolonisierungen ... Ganz klare Leseempfehlung für jeden Weltraum-Fan.

The Martian has been one of my favorite movies of 2015 (Kingsman has been my Number 1, no questions ask) so it was logical to read the book eventually after I’ve found out one existed. And let me tell you, it has been one fine read! Plot The story follows US-american astronaut Mark Watney after he got left behind on Mars by his Ares 3 Mission crew mates. Not because he has been an especially strong jerk and his crew mates had enough of him to leave him on his own, but because of a flying Satelite that crashed into Watney and basically stabbed him not to death. I've watched the movie 8 years ago and i remeber to have liked it quiet a lot. This book was gifted to me and i was unsure if i would like it. Afterall i knew the outcome and parts of the story. But the style of writing with the diaries, jumping from sol to sol, earth updates. I consumed this book soo fast. I'll need to watch to movie again sometime soon, but this book was spectecular. Most of it is very realistic too, Andy knows what he's talking about!

Wer wissen möchte, wie sich eine durch unglückliche Umstände auf dem Mars für tot gehaltene und deshalb von der restlichen Crew einer Marsmission zurückgelassene Mischung aus Scotty, MacGyver und einer sarkastischen Kodderschnauze mit allen möglichen Widrigkeiten herumschlägt, um eine Chance zur Rettung zu erhalten, der ist hier bestens bedient. Um nichts anderes geht es, keine Aliens, keine superduper Zukunftstechnologie, dafür etwas Ähnliches wie "Apollo 13" auf dem Mars, mit einer sehr gelungenen Mischung aus Techtalk und Humor. Für Liebhaber des Genres eine dicke Empfehlung! Und dazu der Beweis, dass Selfpublisher durchaus einen zweiten Blick wert sein können.

Watney es un personaje que le pasan muchas cosas pero donde uno ve problemas el ve soluciones y muy prácticas. Este viaje a marte fue increíble. Es la segunda vez que lo leo y el cariño que le tenía no ha muerto es más se intensifico. Lo terminé hace dos días y recién después de 5 años y más vi la película por primera vez! Fue Hermoso! Rating: First off, let's warn you: This will probably be an unpopular review, but will I play down my disappointment with this best-selling novel here? When I read a book that popular and it doesn't manage to impress me at all, I just can't give it more than two stars. Review: Before deciding to give "The Martian" a chance, I had already heard a lot about this book. Nearly every day, a review about it popped up on my newsfeed, and my local book store even arranged one huge bookshelf in its entrance area with approximately twenty copies of it. Combined with all this hype surrounding the cine film (which I haven't watched so far, but intend to do), I couldn't resist the urge to jump on the bandwagon and start reading the novel. I have to admit, it was the first experience I've ever had with science fiction in literature, and it only convinced me to keep away from this genre in future. While I did enjoy the 'Alien' movies with the amazing Sigourney Weaver (well, at least the second and the third one of them), nearly everything else out of the sci-fi genre has managed to disappoint me, so it has become the only genre I usually try to avoid. To begin with, kudos to Andy Weir for the research in regard to mathematical and physical aspects. However, there has been so much math, I wanted to quit reading every time the book started to babble about chemical formulas and whatever else there has been (which was a lot!). I have nothing against math, I essentially even like it, but I have to endure so much of it in university, I don't want to be confronted with it in books I'm reading for enjoyment as well. And as to physics and chemistry ... well, I deselected those two school subjects as soon as I was able to, so I didn't understand a lot of it, to be honest (it sounded plausible, though, and judging from several other reviews, they seem to be well-researched as well, so I'll claim to be able to praise Andy Weir for doing it the right way). The main protagonist, Mark Watney, was a funny character, perhaps one of the funniest characters I've ever encountered in literature. So many of his remarks resulted in me nearly dying of laughter, and only with their help was I able to get to the very end of the novel without skipping anything because I always feared to miss another funny comment by Watney. Apart from that, he was characterized merely by his sense of humor and his courage, and maybe this was the reason why I never really warmed up to him. I would have liked to read about him thinking of his family, yet unfortunately we only got to know about their existence, nothing about the characters themselves. (And now I hope I didn't skip any section broaching this issue ... because, well, yes, I did indeed skip some minor sections which were boring as hell, though never more than one page at once). On the other hand, the NASA employees and the people who were involved in the attempt to rescue Watney's life were well-developed characters and all had their own interesting stories and scenes, but I had several problems with trying to distinguish them from each other, so I never really grew attached to any of the characters - which should be necessary in a story dealing with survival and danger to life, in my opinion. In addition, the plot was constructed of two major elements which have been repeated as if Andy Weir wrote the story while in a continuous loop - first the problem, then the solution, then a problem again, then - surprise! - a solution, and so on. Sometimes some minor problems with getting to the solution, but it always came up in the right moment. It got exhausting after about thirty repetitions. But let's say something positive: I caught myself paying attention because I wanted to have something I can try to remember if I will somehow end up stranded alone on Mars myself at some point in future. Okay, fun aside: I would not be able to survive three days up there, certainly not as long as Watney did. But I doubt I'll ever get to Mars or any other planet, so I hope am sure I'll never need to remember how Mark Watney dealt with being stranded on Mars. Conclusion: I have kind of a guilty conscience because of my low rating of this novel. 74% of my Goodreads friends have added the book (most of them reading it as well) with an average rating of 4.27. That's pretty high, I guess, especially since only one of those reviews, Steph's, agrees with my opinion. I think I'll lay the blame for my dislike of "The Martian" on my overall antipathy against the genre. And the book can be recommended nevertheless, because if you enjoy sci-fi, it will probably be the perfect reading experience for you.

Re-read Januar 2020: Gefiel mir auch dieses Mal wieder sehr gut. Da ich es jedoch dieses Mal auf Englisch gelesen habe, hatte ich teilweise bei den Teilen wo es um wissenschaftliche Überlegungen und Erklärungen ging etwas Schwierigkeiten alles nach zu vollziehen. 4.5* Der Marsianer von Andy Weir Ich finde es sehr schwierig Rezensionen zu Büchern zu schreiben, die mir so gut gefallen haben, dass ich eigentlich gar nicht anders kann als über sie zu schwärmen. Dafür gibt es zwei Gründe, erstens soll das hier eine Kurzrezi werden und kein eigener Roman und zweitens weiss ich jetzt schon, dass egal was ich hier schreibe, es meiner Begeisterung nicht gerecht werden wird. Eigentlich will ich euch einfach sagen: Lest unbedingt dieses Buch! Bei mir ist es jetzt schon mehrere Wochen her, seit ich das Buch beendet habe, aber wenn ich mir meine Notizen jetzt nochmal durchlese, dann würde ich es am liebsten direkt nochmal lesen. Leider habe ich dafür keine Zeit, stattdessen habe ich das Buch allen in meinem Umfeld empfohlen und meine Ausgabe sieht inzwischen auch schon reichlich abgenutzt aus, so oft wurde sie schon gelesen. Ich würde das Buch auch wirklich jedem empfehlen, der gerne spannende Bücher liest, egal ob diese Person sonst gerne Science Fiction liest oder nicht. Sobald man mal angefangen hat zu lesen, kann man das Buch wirklich kaum mehr aus der Hand legen und ich habe über die Hälfte des Buches an einem Nachmittag verschlungen. Mich hat schon lange kein Buch mehr so gefesselt und in seinen Bann gezogen. Mir war auf keiner Seite langweilig. Mark Watneys Überlebenskampf auf dem Mars, wurde richtig toll beschrieben. Ich fand es faszinierend, wie Watney für jedes Problem eine Lösung findet und fand es super interessant, wie genau dieser Prozess beschrieben wurde. Watney war auch ein echt toller Protagonist, er ist natürlich super intelligent und sehr kreativ, wenn es darum geht mit seine begrenzten Mittel so einzusetzen, dass er trotz allem überleben kann. Zudem hat er auch einen tollen Humor und war mir schon von der ersten Seite an extrem sympathisch, weshalb man auch super mit ihm mitfühlen und mitfiebern kann. Mir hat jedoch auch sehr gut gefallen, dass man nicht nur Watneys Sichtweise hat, sondern auch Kapitel aus der Sicht seiner Crew, die ihn zurück gelassen hat, und den Verantwortlichen der NASA auf der Erde bekommt. Diese Abwechslung hat mir sehr gut gefallen und man bekommt so auch ein Gefühl dafür, wie alle mit Watney mitfiebern und alles daran setzten ihn zu retten. Was mir besonders gut gefallen hat war, dass die Geschichte nie hoffnungslos wird und auch wenn alles schief läuft, bleibt die Geschichte humorvoll. Ich hätte nie erwartet, dass eine Geschichte in der ein Mann allein auf dem Mars ums Überleben kämpft gleichzeitig so spannend und so lustig sein könnte. Es gibt so viele tolle Momente, da muss ich schon nur wenn ich daran denke Grinsen. Der Marsianer ist definitiv eines der besten Bücher die ich dieses Jahr gelesen habe.

First thing first - I finally, finally finished it without watching the film. Kudos to me. Yes it takes a lot of self control to not watch a film that everyone else is drooling on and have the patience to read it. So as 2016 started i resolute to read more than 200 books starting with The Martian and OH MY GOD was I any wrong? Definitely a story which brought out the best things one should start an year with, courage, HOPE, will, patience and what not! It's a story about a guy, Mark Watney, whom I am definitely, head over heels in love with, becomes one of the first people to walk on Mars but accident causes him to be believed dead and abandoned by his crew. He doesn't have anybody around him or any communication with earth, sounds like a very depressing and a heart wrenching story, the first guy to die on Mars? AH WELL NO! The way it is written makes you laugh out loud and i mean literally laugh out loud throughout the story, even when the protagnist is going through something really serious, isn't that how one reacts in real life? I was so able to connect with him throughout the story. So well, you might ask why 4 stars and why not 5? Well I have my reasons for that too. It had so many facts and information and things I am not aware of which kind of made me feel as if i am reading some alien freaking language and at times i lost that connection with the story and the characters but then again Mark Watney used to come back to rescue with his witty comments. I would have liked to get a more simplified explanation of whatever the hell was happening, but i think the film will fill in for that. My second concern was that towards the end of the story it just kind of got draggy, as if the author is deliberately trying to get him in trouble so that we get a more thrilling experience but i believe even if the storm dust incident was omitted it would have still made a helluva journey. Just my opinion, don't kill me for it. Definitely going for the film tomorrow ;)

This novel’s premise is great! It’s Hollywood blockbuster worthy… and it probably will become one. You need to read it before it is turned into “Apollo 13 meets Cast Away” as the book is advertised. So, the premise: This is the story of Mark Watney who is stuck on Mars. His crew left without him because they thought him dead. And now he has to do everything he can to survive and maybe somehow get off the planet. Every time I write a review the first thing I do is go through all the notes I have been taking while reading. These contain notes I made in the physical copy or on my kindle and the updates on my Goodreads profile. Going through these notes recreates the reading experience and I can see how my opinion changed while moving forward. Going through the notes I made on my kindle while reading “The Martian” I had a great laugh. My first notes are all along the line of “since we have the protagonists logs we can assume he survived – what a stupid way of telling the story”. Who would’ve thought I’d rate the book with 5 stars later on? But once I got into it and really started to like the protagonist and the claustrophobic feel of the narrative something else happened. The author changed the point of view! I thought this was going to be a survivor’s diary. But no! It turned into a thriller about trying to save the protagonist. And even though I was annoyed at the shift because I liked being alone on Mars with Watney (the protagonist) I came around quite quickly. Every shift in the novel’s narrative style or point of view has its reason and it is necessary to keep up the suspense. And it really works! After I got used to that narrative to and fro and I kind of got a feel for the kind of book I was reading I couldn’t put it down. Or rather, when I was forced to put it down – by ridiculous things like work and social gatherings – I was fidgeting to pick it up. I was worried about Watney and his survival. And the other characters! Yes, plural! Weir does not dwell on endless characterization. He just throws them at you and – magically – they become personalities with a voice of their own. He manages to create characters in just a few sentences. I loved that. And because Weir is so good at this the novel can be a plot-driven novel and still have a great and diverse set of characters. In the end I was so caught up in the story that I even shed a few tears during the final scene – I am not going to tell you what kind of tears they were, of course! I am just going to say: read this book! Because even though I am not going to claim I understood all the technical blah blah Weir comes up with (he DOES explain things very well, however!) it is an interesting and suspense-filled read. And you get to learn a bit about space travel, chemistry, and botany on the way. And if you’re anything like me you will love Watney’s sarcasm and attitude in the face of utter hopelessness.
