One of the worst books ever! I Dnf it at 2% because wtf,the writing style was too bad. I suffer to read few pages of it. I was so excited to read it but It disappointed me. I hate it
This book took me by surprise. I had heard some things about the book beforehand and didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. Initially I had problems getting into the book and adjusting to the writing style. The author writes kind of whimsical and pretty descriptive. It also had been a long time since I read something in 3rd person, so it took some time to adjust. I also had to get used to the terminology and found myself going back to the glossary. But now that I am on the second book it all flows more naturally and you get used to it pretty quickly. I got excited when I remembered something and through the way the characters addressed each other it already told you a lot about them and their relationship. Shazi is a strong willed girl/woman, who speaks her mind and has a sharp tongue. I think her honesty and wittiness really made her more believable and all the more lovable. As the story progresses we see a more loving and caring side to her, cause in the beginning she is so hellbent on getting what she wants, which is to seek revenge. Khalid really grew on me. In the beginning he seemed very one dimensional to me but towards the middle of the story I started to understand him. The fact that he is the most skilled swordsman in all of Rey kind of helped ;) But all jokes aside I feel so strongly for him. He really is a broken character and is incredibly strong to me. What he went through and is still going through added depth to him and made me understand him more. I get that some people might think that Khalid could never redeem himself, but it's fiction and this is kinda how we roll here. Like if he was a real person there would be no excuse but he isn't and he, in the given context, has reason. I was really annoyed with Tariq to be honest. I get that we were supposed to feel bad for him because Shazi is his first love and all but I just kept being annoyed. Like dude manages to get into the castle anyway so whyyyy do you wanna start a war dude. Him being all sulky and take me back please was so weird, since Shazi clearly didn't feel the same anymore. Despina and Jalal brought the comic relief while still being extremely well rounded characters. I kind of loved that both main character had a person who was by their side. Now the relationship of Khalid and Shazi was really enemies to lovers. She went from hating him to being totally conflicted to, well, loving hime despite his flaws. I must admit that I couldn't fully grasp the development of their relationship, but once we got to a certain point the romance was so soft and heartbreaking and admittedly that is the reason why this book got 4 stars. The way they talk to each other and bicker is incredibly entertaining, soft and makes me squirm I really enjoyed this despite my initial hesitation. It isn't to heavy or complicated but didn't fail to make me shed a tear or two. The romance was perfect for me. I am excited to see how it will all come to a conclusion in book two
4,5 Sterne für "The Wrath and the Dawn" Gott, dieses Buch hat mich einfach mitten ins Herz getroffen.
FAVOURITE BOOK OF THE YEAR SO FAR. SO INCREDIBLY GOOD. the only thing that slightly bothered me was the love triangle. i really enjoyed the romance between Shahrzard and Khalid, which usually doesn't happen, but Tariq is such an unnecessary character, i don't like him AT ALL. also he and Shahrzad have no chemistry imo. besides the unnecessary love triangle, everything was AWESOME.
Intriguing setting that somehow delivers and doesn’t
I was quite excited to start reading this book with a retelling of Scheherazade and the grander scheme around it. We get these bits at the very beginning - and then it sort of fizzles out, I think we’re supposed to guess that it continues? That was a little disappointing but still the rest of the story is beautifully told and the developments between the two main characters are cute. Two of the other POVs to me always seemed like an interruption of the main plot. While one makes sense for the finale, the other one just seems unnecessary and meandering, it could have been either completely omitted or blown further up with the development of the rebellion playing a larger part. That’s my main critique but I have hopes for the next to delve deeper into that aspect.
What an awesome book!! It took me some time to get into this book, but after about 50 pages I was totally into it and I loved every page. At some points in the beginning I was a bit confused with all the names, but I got used to them quickly. All in all, I really loved this book and especially the strong and sassy main character.
1,5 stars cz it actually left me curious how it ends. Falling below already abominably low expectations is at least something this book can chalk up on the list of achievements.
Wow. I really loved this one. The strange thing is I wasn't expecting to. The story goes that Shahrzad has volunteered to marry the Caliph knowing she will be dead by dawn the next day. Its happened to hundred of girls and it happened to Shiva, Shahrzad best friend. She goes into the place with full intent of killing him and ending all the bloodshed but that isn't quite what happens. She expects a monster and manages some how to stay alive. I thought this was a lovely story. I got quite a bit of an Aladdin story and loved it. Intrigue, mayhem, love, hate, war. It has it all and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good story with all of this. Brilliant!
If you’re looking for a toxic unhealthy relationship and long and detailed descriptions of clothing and jewelry, this book is for you. If you actually want some sort of plot based around a groundbreaking steamy love story with a badass girl in the middle who remains true to herself and her principles then please move on, there is nothing to read here.
the ending :(
The Wrath & The Dawn is a brilliant book ... to absolutely no ones surprise. There are books that are incredibly well written and capture you with amazing characters, a great plot, a fantastic world-building or relationships that make you super emotional ... and then there's The Wrath & The Dawn. It has everything I already mentioned and more. Renée Ahdieh manages to put a spell on you and makes you fall in love with her beautiful writing - and that's REALLY beautiful, I mean ... wow. "Some things exist in our lives for but a brief moment. And we must let them go on to light another sky." I would love to talk about the plot but I think you should experience this on your own. It's a retelling of A Thousand and One Nights and even though I've heard of it I had absolutely no clue what it was about. It was good because that way I was constantly surprised and tried to puzzle everything together - I failed miserably, by the way. This book is a freaking mystery! One moment you think you have things sorted out and know what's going on and in the next all your ideas and guesses are thrown overboard so you have to start from scratch! I LOVED IT. I did guess a few things but most of the time I was clueless, confused and while I believe my mind was rattling all the time it actually only screamed WHAT'S GOING ON?!?! Well. Now my favorite part of the book - the characters. Before I start fangirling all over again and scream at you in capslock I just wanna say that Sharhzard and Khalid as well as everyone else were extremely well-written and fleshed out! They had depth to their character, different facades and made you feel all the things they felt. It's seriously amazing! Beware of the capslock now because OH MY GOOOOOD! Khalid is bae and I was into him right from the beginning. I didn't believe that all the rumors where true and that he's the monster everyone thinks he is. Just nope. I have a thing for mysterious/broken guys anyway, so obviously he was right up my alley. Also, don't even get me started on Sharhzard because she was freaking awesome too - such a strong and defiant girl that isn't afraid of fighting her own battles. She doesn't need a man to protect her, she knows how to kick ass and that's what I loved so much about her! "It's inevitable. When you meet the one who makes you smile as you've never smiled before, cry as you've never cried before... there is nothing to do but fall." And what about their relationship, you ask me? HOOOOLY SMOKES!!! I'M OBSESSED, REALLY. No insta love. It's slow-burn and even though there's so much we don't understand at the beginning it makes perfectly sense. Trust me. I keep fangirling about these two so hard and couldn't even contain my excitement when they're in a scene together like HOOOOW?!?! They complement each other so perfectly and bring out different sides of the other ... they're such passionate characters and how conflicted they both were because of their feelings ... oh god. I love this. So much. SHIP, SHIP, SHIP!!! ♥ The story/metaphor of the Mountain of Adamant is probably one of my favorites. The references to Khalid and Sharhzard are AMAZING and I cannot stop thinking about this! Like ... the mountain has so much power that everything around him is pulled towards it - once it has you in its grip, it's too late and in spite of all your efforts to get away, you just can't. You drift closer and closer, faster and faster and when you finally let go and give in you break apart and collapse and everything will be unraveled and uncovered. HOLY SHIIIIT! "I love you, a thousand times over. And I will never apologize for it." The Wrath & The Dawn is a book that you cannot and do not want to put out of your hands. I wanted to read this far into the night which hasn't happened in SO LONG - this already should tell you how brilliant it is. It's definitely one of my favorite reads of 2016 and I can recommend this 1001%. Believe me, it totally lives up to all the hype it receives - you won't be disappointed! www.aworldbetweenfoldedpages.blogspot.com ________________________ May 1st: SO MUCH LOVE FOR THIS!! This is definitely one of my favorite reads of 2016. I LOVED IT SO MUCH! Now I'm in desperate need of getting the second book asap, ahh!
This was such a huge disappointment. I always just kinda assumed this would be a 5-star read for me, but it was just the opposite. What I enjoyed: The writing style was great! I loved that there were so many detailed descriptions, it really made the world more intriguing. Story and character-wise though, it was beyond boring. The story just kind of goes on and on with Shazi wasting her days away in the palace without anything interesting happening for like 200 pages. And talking about Shazi, I just couldn't bring myself to care about her. There was no depth at all to her character and the relationships she has to other (also very shallow) characters in the story. The love story just.. happened..? There was no point to grasp when and where, but at some point Shazi and Khalid were in love. That was it. And don't even get me started on her 'childhood sweetheart' Tariq, whose only character trait was that he liked Shazi. Also no explanaition why, other than that he's known her forever. I could go on and on, but I'll stop myself here.
No cometeré errores. Y te voy a matar. Con mis propias manos.
It was really enjoyable but did not catch me 100%. The best thing about the story were in my opinion the sparkling variety of characters (which I indeed would have enjoyed getting even more of) and the thousand-and-one- night feeling to it! However, I felt like something was 'missing' in Shazi and Khalid's relationship, not a lot but still. Oh yes, and that Khalid was repeatedly described as a "monster" slightly unnerved me.
This book deserves 5 stars just for the chapter titles. Even though I had no clue why what was happening happened until the last ~50 pages, the story and the writing had me hooked and made me fall in love with the characters and the story.
I'm in love with this adaption of Arabian Nights. There were almost no passages I didn't like or felt bored. Even though English is not my native language and I needed a little time to get into the writing style (mainly because it's not my mother language) I couldn't get enough of it. It's a total page-turner. Can't wait for the second part of The Wrath and the Dawn.
Update re-read 2016: Even better the second time around. I love this book and story to death. Review 2015: This book was amazing. Breathtaking. Perfect. I do not have words. The second I heared what this book was about I knew that I was going to love it. I love all things related to the fairytales of 1001 nights, and I knew that I was going to adore this retelling, BUT I would have never thought that I would love this book as much as I did. The characters were amazing, and all so authentic. Especially Khalid was my favorite, his character is just so interesting and complicated. But also Shazi was really great. I wish I was as eloquent as she is. The writing was completely beautiful, very poetic and just great. The arabian words didn't disturb me at all, I was rather pleased to learn new words in that language. I cannot, and I repeat, CANNOT wait for the next book! Please give it to me! 5/5 ★
Ok so don’t hate me. This book was ok, I expected more. I thought it would be more like the Story’s of Sharazade. I will read the second book. But it will be next year
So many feelings! This book was so good! I absolutely loved it! The plot, the setting, the characters..! All perfect. Shahrzad is an amazingly strong and complex character, and very relatable. She struggles with thoughts and feelings that we would too in her place. Despina and Jalal are funny and caring characters that both lighten the mood and make us more invested in everything. Tariq makes us worry for Khalid, as other characters do. And last, but most certainly not least, Khalid himself. He is a character with such depth! I cared for him and fell for him when he has barely said two words!! He is a troubled character that I couldn't help but fall for. He is at the very top of my favourite characters, along with Aaron Warner form the Shatter Me trilogy. Khalid cared even when no one else notices. He is in pain even if he doesn't show it. And he is so loved even though he thinks himself unworthy of that love and a monster. He is a monster, but even monsters deserve love and he is the perfect example of that. Update 14.07.2018 Well, first of all, I need to amend what I said before about Kalid being a monster. He isn't one, not exactly. On one hand, he is, because he kills girls (One life to one dawn.). But he isn't one because he wants to. As a matter of fact, he does that because he has to. Ava's father forced his hand. He tried very hard not to have to go through with the curse's demands, but his people were suffering and he reached a point where he had no choice. So he was made a monster. And not just by the grieving man, his father did not help either, what with everything he said about Khalid's mother. But the important thing is that he is not as bad as everyone paints him, because they don't know him. Khalid learned to hide his feelings, even from his family. He is sealed shut behind a wall where he can't get hurt. Not even Shazi got through those walls, but she came close enough that he was smiling at her and being real and sweet with her. Speaking of Shazi, I have to give credit where credit is due. She tried hard to come up with a plan to kill Khalid and to survive the dawns. They were never quite good enough because she was intrigued with the man (and who wouldn't?). And life wasn't bad at the palace. He was never bad to her. The one time he was "bad" (when he almost let his guards kill her) he regretted it and ran to her side as fast as he could! He was in love with her almost from the start. And she with him, of course. The relationship is hard but not bad. They are just very guarded people, especially Khalid, and stubborn too. But it works. They understand each other and they yield, more or less, to each other. I love the development of their relationship. Especially when he calls her "my queen" and "Mountain of Adamant" and "joonam, because it melts a person's heart to read this! And, yeah, she seems a bit inconstant at times, wanting him and then not wanting him and then raging at him and feeling angry and all that at him, but it is only understandable I think. The guy is the reason why her best friend is dead and she tries to be strong and keep the hate in her heart, for her sake, to avenge her, and so many others', senseless death. And she is willing to sacrifice herself a couple of times after she discovers about the curse. Because she is just one girl versus an entire kingdom... I really want to see if she learns magic... I would like to see that... And then there's Jalal and Despina and I love them both! They are funny and they treat both the Caliph and the (Brat) Calipha as one would treat a life-long friend. And yeah, Jalal and Khalid are cousins but they are not close. And then there's Tariq. From the first time reading this book I thought the same as Khalid and Jalal: he is a nuisance. I don't hate him, but would much rather not have to read his chapters. He comes across as an entitled brat who just lost his favourite toy. It's always "me, me, me". He doesn't listen to his uncle (who seems to have a good plan with the Sultan of Parthia) and then he has the good fortune of meeting Omar and he is incapable of hearing him too! He annoys the Hel out of me! I like Rahim, but Tariq is a trouble to deal with! The only time I actually thought he was useful was in the end, when he came to get Shazi (btw, Jalal, don't tell him to never bring her back to Rey! I want her with Khalid, you want her with Khalid, Despina wants her with Khalid, Khalid wants her with Khalid, everyone wants her with Khalid, man! So such up and don't be an idiot, even if it is for the right reasons!). Other than that part, I was always huffing when he was the narrator and wanting to be done with his chapters fast! And Jahandar's parts were not much better, but luckily they were much shorter! Anyway, as with the first time reading this: I LOVED IT!!! It is right there, on the scale, next to the Shatter Me trilogy (can't include Restore Me in the mix, regretfully) and ACOTAR. It was beautiful. The characters are compelling, the story is intriguing, the setting is just amazing, bringing to mind Disney's Alladin. Besides, it is a very fast read! So there are only plus here!
