First things first. This is not an account of freedom struggle but just his experiences till formulation of constitution of Congress. Neither is this a full account till then as he chooses not to repeat the things he has already written in someplace else. So getting on with the review: Some people love him and some hate him. But is he really the subject of those feelings or the idea of him popularized by the masses. He is not a hero and he shows that in this book. He just happened to find himself in tense situations that seemed to end in an anti climax every time. Depending upon your existing views, you can interpret this book as validation of your theory. You can judge his deeds as epitome of bravery or hints of cowardice, his thoughts as philosophy of principles or pandora of excuses, his words as confession of egotism or filled with humility. However what can not be argued against is his relevance in uniting masses for the freedom movement. Neither can we ignore his gift to the world of peaceful non cooperation and civil disobedience when such words had no definitions. The path that he takes shows us the entangled nature of ahimsa and truth as well as the benefits of keeping our mind open to new experiences, honest discussions and constant introspection.
