i do feel this book deserves more than three stars. it’s an incredible look behind watanabe’s - toru’s - eyes, to see him navigating his world and the people he picks up and lets fall along the way. the way it made me care about all these bizarre characters, the way it managed to rile my emotions. even the way sex is used as a plot point was fascinating. the whole thing is fascinating! and touching, and really fucking weird in places, but i see why so many people think it’s a terrific book. and they’re right but good fucking lord why the fuck is there so much fucking goddamn suicide in this book. why did this idiot dick of an author decide he needed a minimum of three people to off themselves. why did he decide it was a good idea to describe how a ten year old saw her big sister swinging from a noose. why did you make me read and imagine that. did you think that’s funny, murakami? fuck you

Norwegian Woods is about youth, growing up with pain and having to deal with death but also finding joy in the little moments. The book felt authentic and real, showing life with all its little stories and changes and being realistically unpredictable. There was no clear storyline, no clear topic, just being in love, finding your way and trying to deal with what life throws at you, changing plans and going different paths, and a looot of sex. The writing style had something refreshing and funny including little life lessons along in dialogues and letters and it was just beautifully written. Watanabe was a relatable character, caring about the people he met throughout his life, having casual deep conversations about music, books and life, and generally just floating around and writing letters. The book is nothing extremely catchy, more relaxing when you can't concentrate on something complex. The end was strange, sad, and somewhat disappointing. Generally, I liked the book since Murakami is a talented writer but I'm sure Murakami he has better stories.

Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte von Toru Watanabe. Ein Junge aus Tokio im Jahre 1960. Nach dem Tot seines besten Freundes Kizuki, verliert er sich in seine Gedanken aber er ist nicht alleine damit. Nach einiger Zeit trifft er auf eine alte Freundin - Naoko -, welche die Exfreundin des verstorbenen Freundes war. Somit hatten beide das selbe Leid, wobei Naoko mehr darunter litt. Toru und Naoko kreierten eine besondere Beziehung zueinander welche von langen nächtlichen Spaziergänge und Gesprächen begleitet war. Eine Geschichte über Liebe, Verlust, Entscheidungen und Jugend.

Fand das Buch spitze! War auf der Suche nach einem Buch das ich mit meiner Freundin zusammen lesen konnte. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte ich nie wirklich viel gelesen aber „Norwegian Wood“ zeigte mir die Freude daran. Hatte nie so starke und viele Emotionen beim lesen wie bei diesem Buch. Bislang eindeutige mein Lieblingsbuch!! ❤️

This is one of my all time favorites. I am giving a 4 because I sometimes I have a wried relationship with the book and it's not perfect. Sometimes I remember the good parts then the bad. But still I all the parts are there in my heart. I can clearly visualise everything. Stormtrooper, the walks with forests, the food and dates with midori. The book has some weird stuff though. Like midori at the shrine at home. Like what. Still I highly recommend it. This was my first Murakami and it has been a great journey since. He made me remember how much fun I had reading as a kid and because of him I am able to enjoy reading like I used to. It's just something when you find that good book and can't put it down. I was missing it. Can't wait to read all of Murakami.

3,5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a story of a young man in his teens trying to get into adulthood, showing all his struggles. It was realistic but not boring which is rare for me. I liked the characters, they were unusual and brought me joy. The story itself not really only brings you joy as it mainly portraits problems, struggles, mental health issues, suicide and loneliness. But besides talking about all this, I found this book not to be depressing and rather hopeful. I think I will be thinking about this more often and getting to like this more through time, it was the same with Kafka on the shore for me. I didn’t really get the ending but this may be on purpose.

Ich weiß nicht, wo ich anfangen soll. Das Buch liest sich wie eine einzige kranke Sexfantasie eines alten Mannes, der noch nie eine reale Interaktion mit einer Frau hatte. Alle Frauen sind mental höchst instabil, haben irgendeine Form von Trauma oder mentaler Krankheit und äußern diese in Form von Sex ... Mit dem Protagonisten. Der nicht mehr als mit einem Satz antworten kann und Frauen wie Dreck behandelt. Die Frauen bestehen nur aus ihrem mentalen Trauma und Brüsten. Mehr nicht. Sie sind leere, objektifizierte Hüllen, mit denen der Protagonist Sex hat und ihre Körper ständig mit denen kleiner Kinder und Mädchen vergleicht. Es ist ekelhaft. Die unnötige, sehr explizite Beschreibung einer sexuellen Handlung zwischen einer über 30 jährigen Frau und einem 13 jährigen Mädchen?? Wtf. Für die Geschichte vollkommen unnötig, hat nichts zum Plot oder der Charakterisierung beigetragen, sondern liest sich nur wie eine seeeehr, seeehr schlechte Pornofantasie, die sich jemand in seinem dunklen Zimmer ausgedacht und beim masturbieren aufs Papier gekritzelt hat. Das Buch las sich wie ein Fiebertraum - auf eine schlechte Art und Weise. Ich habe das Buch gelesen, weil mir Murakami mehrmals als Genie der modernen Literatur empfohlen wurde. Nach diesem Buch, und nachdem ich einige weitere Rezensionen zu anderen seiner Werke gesehen habe, scheint die Darstellung von Frauen ein durchgehendes Problem seiner Werke zu sein und ich werde aufgrund dessen nichts mehr von ihm lesen. Das passt einfach nicht zusammen, ich kann darüber nicht hinweg sehen.

Murakami has done it again: every time I‘m beginning to enjoy this book, he writes about another needless and weird sex scene. I really appreciated and liked the thoughts and quotes about death, loss and grief, but the whole vibe of the book was so dislikable, I cannot give more than “bad” three stars.

I really liked reading this book. I liked the feeling it gave me and how relatable it was. It was whimsical, quirky, but also realistic. I can definitely see what people like about Murakami's writing. If conversations between characters about sex make you feel uncomfortable, though, this one might not be for you. I also found some parts to be a little too old-fashioned regarding the view of women. But then I realized it played in the 70s and was released in the 80s, so.. figures. Overall I can just recommend this book and I'm looking forward to reading other books by Murakami.

Nach dem ersten Lesen lässt sich von meiner Seite aus so viel sagen: Ich weiß nicht, was ich von der Geschichte halten soll. Haruki Murakamis Schreibstil ist wahnsinnig schön und bildlich. Das war ein großer großer Pluspunkt beim Lesen & vermutlich eine der wenigen Dingen, die mich an das Buch gefesselt haben. Zur Geschichte kann ich nicht viel sagen. Es ist eine Coming-out-of-age Story und ich glaube, mir hat es massiv an Vorwissen zu den japanischen Studentenaufständen und alles geschichtliche drumherum gefehlt, um wirklich tiefgehende Verständnis für die Charaktere und ihre Lebensweisen zu haben. Ich glaube, diese Verbindung zur Geschichte des Landes macht einen Großteil des Plots tatsächlich aus. Zu den Charakteren: Sie sind mir alle auf die Nerven gegangen und ich fand die Art und Weise, wie Frauen darin dargestellt worden sind - Naoko, Reiko, Midori und auch Hatsumi äußerst befremdlich und auch frauenfeindlich. Ich hab mich immer wieder daran erinnern müssen, dass das Buch in einer anderen Zeit spielt, aber es hat nichts geholfen. Toru Watanabe ist nicht einmal ansatzweise der gute Junge/Gentleman für den er sich hält. Und obwohl ich die Charakter während des Lesens verachtet habe, komme ich nicht drumherum, immer wieder über sie nachzudenken. Ich weiß nicht, ob das, das Mitleid ist. Die vielen tragischen Lebenszustände, wie der Suizid von Kizuki, der zu all dem geführt hat und die Krankheiten um Midoris Familie waren sehr rührend, aber ich hab während des Lesens irgendwann gemerkt, dass mich der Inhalt selbst ein bisschen herunterzieht. Also Vorsicht beim Lesen! Offizie Triggerwarnungen zum Thema Suizid und tödliche Krankheiten und Trauerverarbeitung wären vielleicht hilfreich gewesen (ich weiß, sehr unrealistisch für ein so altes Buch, aber ja). Seid vorsichtig!

The stars are for the excellent writing style. Plotwise this book has totally put me off. It provides an exclusively male gaze but not in any kind of a good (or interesting, for that matter) way, it centers around sex - but not in a good way either. I had the feeling that the story had so much more to give and that it was restrained by the constant, intruding presence of the author himself, who seems to be imposing himself on the male narrator and whose view of women seems to be highly problematic, to say the least. I did not enjoy this read and am quite surprised by how positive the reception of this book is.
