Still confusing. Still complicated. And still so very, very intriguing. This horrible, desolate world just pulls you in and won't let you go.
Some of the narrating perspectives here got even weirder than in book one, but slowly I started to figure out why they are the way they are. The story offered answers (and more questions of course), and for some of them you really have to use your brain. I like that! I enjoyed the characters. Essun's pragmatism and survival instinct, Tonkee's endless curiousity, Ykka's strenth and believe, Nassun's natural giftedness and her deep-rooted yearning for love... I still don't trust Schaffa and I find it difficult to wrap my head around the factions of stone eaters... I can't wait to figure out, how this all ends, though I fear, that mother and daughter might find themselves on different sides. We'll see...
