Has a lot of potential!

Violet is such a badass character and she owns it. Xaden is my new book-crush. I can definitely recommend it, it's up there with the romantasy leaders such as ACOTAR. Sadly, I feel like Yarros is not the best writer (yet). The world building is told more than felt, and she makes characters use vocab that I'd have to look up when all they've ever used was the most basic vocabulary, which makes it less authentic and more like she wants to flex her lexis skills. Also, it was a little predictable, which is not that much of a problem cause sometimes I'm a sucker for stereotypes. Nonetheless, it was very fun to read and the second book is already ordered!

Dragons and an exciting Love Story

Wow! Hear me out - I was a bit sceptical to begin with this series, as I thought „oh jeez not another Eragon“! But my oh my was I wrong. 🤣 We‘re introduced to the life of the people in Basgiath, most notably the students who attend the War College. 🏫 Violet Sorrengail, the youngest daughter of the General, had originally been studying for a different life, when she was forced to join the War college. For someone who is small and fragile, this seemed like a mighty task, which she mastered perfectly, with a little help from the people around her. 🤺🥷🏼 Expertly mastering the challenges ahead, Violet then has to face the dragons, where she can be chosen as a rider. This delightful twist in the story just shows how badass Violet really is. 🐉 Toward the end of the story, Violet begins to unravel certain secrets of the War College, with possibly the biggest twist within the story to finish off the first book of the series. 🤫 A real page turner. Looking forward to the next books! 😍😍

This book was predictable from the very first death in chapter one. A lot of times I found myself thinking a variation of “yep, of course that happened”. There’s recognizable tropes all around. If predictability bothers you, this book is likely not for you. I disagree with other people calling this an enemies-to-lovers or a Hunger Games type love triangle. It’s more “we should be enemies” than anything. It’s also hardly a love triangle when the MC has negative on-page chemistry with one of them. Personally I really enjoyed my time with my this book, though. It was what I needed at the time that I read it. It’s great for getting out of a reading slump. I’m not bothered by seeing things coming and I really love dragons. Most of the tropes did it for me. The dragons are designed interestingly and the characters entertained me enough to be invested in their stories. I have two personal negatives with this book, however. Some statements and sentiments really didn’t need to be repeated THIS often. It occasionally became annoying. Also, Violet is just too horny and at weird times.

ufff..

My gods, where do I start? This book might just be the best fantasy I’ve read in the past years. Violet as FMC is complex, emotional, fierce and intelligent. The characters are so well written, you can’t help but fall in love with them - or hate them to death. Basgiath and the challenges reminded me of Divergent, but never over the top cruel. Rebecca Yarros aces at character development and story telling: I’ve read the book about 10 times by now and each time I catch some new hint about what happens in iron flame - especially Xadens Signet. Can’t wait for Onyx Storm to find out what I missed! Finally, Liams death was the heaviest grief I’ve had in a while and I kinda hate Rebecca Yarros for killing him. Would give it all to read it again for a first time!

I have been in a slump for over 6 months! and this just yanked me out of that hole, slapped me across the face and told me to get on that parapet!!!! Finally a FMC with a personality, a strong will and that knows what she wants and what she is capable of! the raw emotions of violet were so beautiful to read. Every character pulled you in from the start of their description to the last page! I am more than excited for this story to continue. I will now be hibernating until the next book comes out. Or scratch that! i WILL be rereading!!! a true 5/5 star read. If you need something to captivate you, READ THIS!! absolutely amazing thank you Rebecca for sharing this beautiful world and its story with us readers

Oh mein Gott!

That LAST page... I did absolutely not expect that. This book was incredible. I was very apprehensive going into this, because of the hype surrounding this book. I was really let down with "The Serpent and the Wings of Night" and I was worried this would be the same. BOY, was I wrong. This was absolutely amazing and everything I didn't know I needed. I detest it when a character has a savior complex, which is why it took me a minute to warm up to Violet. It gave "I am not like other girl", and then she gave Rhiannon her shoe... But throughout the story I started to understand her more and she did totally grow on me. Xaden Riorson, ughhh. All I can say is I am OBSESSED and so is he. He ADORES Violet, he just can't admit it. We do stan a man in denial tho... I can proudly admit that I fell for a man who can wield shadows and ain't much of a talker again. His action do really speak louder than words. The whole book was so amazing. The whole time reading this I already dreaded the end because I didn't want it to end. I loved the setting and the world building was exactly how I like it. It wasn't too heavy but you still understand what's going on. The dragons were not used as a plot device but beautifully integrated into the story. The dragons were to prominent and I enjoyed what they brought to the story. I loved all the little "games" or challenges the new riders had to go through. The characters were so well fleshed out and the pacing was totally my style. I like not have a single moment of peace and the story kept on going, never getting boring once. I enjoyed this so much and I honestly gor ACOTAR feelings while reading. I don't want to compare it to any book, because it is unlike anything I've ever read. Saying that I need to say that the feelings it gave me, I've only had with ACOTAR and the last TOG books and that is saying something. I PHYSICALLY don't know how I am supposed to wait until September....

❤️ Mega gut. Eins meiner Jahreshighlights in 2023

Was war das bitte ♥️😭🐉

Das 1. Buch hat mich schon emotional komplett fertig gemacht. Aber diese Fortsetzung. Juunge!

My hopes were so high for this one...

I just want to say as someone who genuinely enjoyed Fourth Wing, while fully recognizing the lack of actual world-building (Violet reciting random history facts was funny once, but please stop using that as a lazy excuse to build the world) I really hoped things would expand in Iron Flame. But nope. What I got instead was endless, unnecessary fights between Xaden and Violet. I honestly can’t even tell who acted more like a toddler half the time. CAN YOU TWO PLEASE JUST TALK LIKE ADULTS? And don’t even get me started on Varrish and Cat. They felt like copy-paste replacements for Jack Barlowe, existing solely to torment Violet for no real reason. Why are we recycling villains? Also, remember how in book one it was such a huge deal that Violet knew her toxins and was this super sharp, brilliant mind? They remind us like 103,929 times how insanely smart she is—and yet here, she’s the most naive person in the entire book. Is this… reverse character development? Is she supposed to evolve backwards? And honestly, after 900 pages, the book gives you basically nothing substantial. Just crumbs. It feels like a filler book but it’s not supposed to be a filler book. And that’s what makes it so frustrating. Totally killed the series for me. Hoping Onyx Storm redeems it but I’m not holding my breath.

Absolutely not worth the time to read it

After the massive hype surrounding Fourth Wing, I was curious to see if Iron Flame would take the story to a new level. Would Violet finally show some real character growth? Would the plot deepen beyond surface-level action and romance? Unfortunately, the answer to both questions is a resounding no. Following the events of Fourth Wing, Violet is once again thrown into danger, political intrigue, and the ever-complicated dynamic with Xaden. However, instead of pushing the story forward in any meaningful way, Iron Flame feels like it’s constantly chasing the next dramatic moment without a clear direction. Character Development: One of my biggest frustrations with this book is the complete lack of character growth—especially for Violet. She is still the same person she was at the beginning of Fourth Wing, making the same questionable decisions and reacting to everything in the most irrational way possible. Instead of evolving into a stronger, more capable leader, she spends half the book arguing with Xaden over things that ultimately don’t matter. Their relationship, which should have matured by now, feels exhausting rather than engaging. The Plot (Or Lack Thereof): Rather than delivering a compelling, well-structured story, Iron Flame feels like a collection of loosely connected events designed to keep the tension artificially high. Every chapter seems to be searching for the next big dramatic twist or emotional breakdown, but none of it truly adds depth to the world or characters. It’s just more—more pages, more angst, more conflict—but not necessarily better. The Cat/Xaden Backstory: A perfect example of wasted potential is the entire subplot with Cat and her history with Xaden. Instead of enriching the story or adding meaningful layers to the characters, it feels completely unnecessary. It doesn’t impact the main plot in any significant way, nor does it contribute to Violet’s development. It’s simply there, filling pages without giving us anything substantial. Violet & Xaden – The Toxic Cycle: What was once an intriguing dynamic between Violet and Xaden has now turned into repetitive, pointless bickering. Their relationship doesn’t feel passionate or complex—it just feels toxic. They spend more time arguing over irrelevant things than actually working together, making it hard to root for them as a couple. Iron Flame is an unnecessarily long book that adds very little value to the series. Instead of meaningful storytelling, it relies on excessive drama, a stagnant protagonist, and filler content that does little to expand the world or its characters. If Fourth Wing had potential, Iron Flame squanders it by focusing on spectacle over substance. ⭐ 2/5 stars – more pages, less story, and a protagonist who refuses to grow.

After finishing this book, I was simply left speechless. So many people had been talking about it, so I wanted to check it out for myself. But this book completely consumed me. I couldn’t stop reading. Violet and Xaden—the story between them is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking. I’m utterly captivated by their love story. But the tension in the book as well—so many things happened that I absolutely didn’t see coming. It was simply breathtaking. And the ending… I was left speechless. I just love everything about it!

So what? Just saying.

I tried to read this, i tried to finish it. But I couldn’t. This is a DNF for me. I wanted to read Fourth wing because, well it is fourth wing. It took the booktok fantasy by storm. And its third book was the biggest release this winter. And i love fantasy and dragons. I liked Eragon, The Priory of the Orange Tree, and His Majesty's Dragon. This book should be up my alley. It wasn’t. The closets i could come to describe reading this book is drinking sand. It is so dry and spiceless. It is just a bunch of old tropes stitched together, but the author don’t do anything interesting with it. There is no subversions, or heck even just doing them well. I read So this is happy ever after and that book is just tropes. But that book just executed them really well, and it works. Sometimes tropes executed to perfection is all you need. But Fourth wing it is just so bland. The best thing in the book was the dragons but there wasn’t enough of them. I didn’t like the main characters nor the rest of the cast. And the world building just left me a lot of questions, but no want to understand it. What also really annoyed me about it, it doesn’t feel like fantasy to me. If you removed the dragons in the book, and set it in a modern military school you wouldn’t have to change one dang thing. If this is your first fantasy book with dragon riding and military school, you would get something out of it. But i really think you would get more out of reading Eragon, His mayasterys dragon, or heck any other, protagonist goes to magical scholl and grows. DNF out of 5.

I enjoyed reading this book even though I do think it could have been a lot better in certain aspects. The conversations the characters had with each other seemed really off for me sometimes and the info dumping got quite annoying at some point. I also couldn’t really get into most of the characters. The only time I got emotionally invested was when Liam died since I liked him the most, but most of the time I didn’t really care about the characters. I also thought it was really weird that Violet was thirsting for Xaden LITERALLY from the very beginning even tho they were supposed to be enemies? I get that he is attractive and all but her horniness threw me off quite a bit. I really enjoyed the dragons tho and the storyline was good too, in my opinion. All things considered it was still a fun read for me and I will probably read the second book as well :)
