I was incredibly excited to read this book after seeing a recommendation on TikTok stating that it’s a book that puts you right into the serial killers POV or -better- makes you feel that you are the serial killer. The POV was definitely something else and something that you don’t find so often in books, being written in 2nd persons perspective. The beginning part up until the middle of the book definitely made me feel anxious, cringy and left me thinking about a lot of things. Towards the end it got a bit less, some parts were (in my opinion) irrelevant to the story, while other parts were missing to make the whole story complete. All in all it’s a book I would recommend to people nonetheless, sadly some parts just left me a bit disappointed.

Manchmal muss das Buch mich finden und nicht umgekehrt, davon bin ich fest überzeugt. So las ich den Titel, hatte ein bestimmtes Bild im Kopf - und wurde völlig überrascht. „Notes on an execution“ hat so manch eine Saite in mir zum Schwingen gebracht. Teilweise war ich selbst ein wenig überfordert. Im Nachwort des Buches schreibt die Autorin, dass sie über die Opfer, vor allem die Frauen, der Serientäter schreiben wollte. Während das Leben der Serientäter mitunter sogar mehrmals verfilmt wurde, geraten die Opfer in Vergessenheit. Oder sind ein Anhang, „XY, Opfer von“. Ihre Geschichte geht verloren, ihre Zukunft wird geraubt. Und hier setzt die Autorin an. Dieses Buch ist auf der einen Seite die Beschreibung einer schwierigen Reise mehrerer Menschen, auf der anderen Seite jedoch auch ein kritischer Blick auf die Gesellschaft: über das Foster Care System (Pflegesystem) in den USA, über den Kampf der Kinder um ihren Platz in der Welt und auch über deren Eltern. Wer sind die Eltern, die ihre Kinder verlieren oder sogar freiwillig in die Obhut des Staates bringen? Doch zurück zum Titel. Das Buch beginnt damit, dass wir als Leser Ansel Packer kennenlernen. Ansel Packer soll in zwölf Stunden hingerichtet werden. Und auf den nächste knapp 300 erfahren wir, warum. Dieses Buch legt nicht, nein, es drückt den Finger in die Wunde. Ansel Packer wuchs bis zu seinem dritten Lebensjahr in ein Familie voller körperlicher und psychischer Gewalt auf. Umstände, die etwas mit Ansel machen. Wusstet ihr, dass Soziopathen häufig nicht als Soziopathen auf die Welt kommen, sondern zu Soziopathen werden? Das Buch war stellenweise so bedrückend, dass ich pausieren musste. Ich war wütend auf Ansel, doch in manchen Momenten auch unendlich traurig und ich hätte mir so gewünscht, dass Ansel nicht der war, der er war. Aber war der Wunsch fair von mir? Ich weiß es nicht. Die Autorin schafft es, ohne dramatisch zu werden, sämtliche Emotionen in mir auszulösen. Ich könnte seitenlang über die Polizistin Saffy schreiben, die ebenfalls Teil des Foster Care Sytsems war, jedoch den Absprung schafft und in den Polizeidienst eintritt. Und immer auf der Suche nach ihren Wurzeln ist, denn ihren Vater aus Indien hat sie nie kennengelernt und doch hat sie so vieles von ihm. Ein bewegendes Buch, das ich jedoch nur im passenden Moment lesen konnte.

Even if the plot of the book is not very surprising, it is still exciting. The reader is led through Ansel's sad life page by page. The same applies to all the people whose lives he influences. It was only in the final stages of the book that I felt sympathy for him. His life might have been different in a different universe. Elsewhere.

I feel like the book tried to explore rather deep and at some points dark themes but didn’t really do so in a suiting way. It felt really off putting and weirdly inserted in some situations. What I also thought was weird, was how the book wanted you to feel for Ansel, which I also couldn’t. Plus, the epilogue didn’t work for me. And yes, this book sparks a conversation to be had, but also did not really change my (already existing) opinion on it.

You are sentenced to death. Revisiting the choices of every one playing a role in the branches of life go through your head within the last day before your last breath. Multiple protagonists, multiple aquaintances and family members, friends and co-workers. So many people, all playing a role in the outcome to your little life in the cell. And that is precisley what i disliked about this book. Retelling a story with a known outcome with so many different characters that switch fairly often, fade in and out of relevance. It is not a bad story, but a rambling one.
