While the sequel was definitely more action-packed and surprising, and the addition of Leelas perspective was a great choice to keep the suspense up, I wasn't too invested in whatever was going on down in Pelago and a little bit confused by the magic system. The resolution in the end happened quite fast and I still think that the hetero romance storyline of Sera is very awkward (considering her growing up in this amazing queer community).
