Mir persönlich hat die Serie wirklich sehr gefallen, weswegen ich mir unbedingt die Vorlage in Form der Buchreihe von Julia Quinn nicht entgehen lassen wollte. Das Buch gilt als historischer (Liebes-)Roman, welcher im 19. Jahrhundert spielt. Daphne Bridgerton ist nun im heiratsfähigen Alter und muss noch in der Ballsaison einen geeigneten Ehemann für sich finden. Nicht nur ihre Mutter, sondern auch die Gesellschaft drängen sie dazu, bis sie sich schließlich auf einen Deal mit dem Duke of Hastings Simon Basset einlässt. Anders als die Serie handelt das Buch fast ausschließlich um die Beziehung von Daphne und Simon. Man erfährt, wie sie sich kennenlernen und sich näher kommen. Da es nunmal auch ein historischer Roman ist, bekommt auch einiges über die damalige Gesellschaft sowie die Verhaltensweisen und Regeln mit. Julia Quinn schreibt sehr einfach und unterhaltend und formt damit ihre sehr spannenden und sympathischen Charaktere. Im Buch haben mir die Hauptcharaktere Daphne und Simon noch ein wenig besser gefallen. Sie waren neckisch, spitzbübisch und sehr humorvoll. Die Serie gefällt mir allerdings doch noch ein klein wenig besser, da es dort auch um die anderen Geschwister Bridgerton und weitere Nebencharaktere geht. Die Intrigen, der viktorianisch-romantische Flair und ganz viel Liebe kommen dort auch nicht zu kurz!

I started reading this in anticipation of Season 3 airing on Netflix soon. I'm a bit disappointed to say I liked the tv show better? That's not to say I didn't like the book, but as always I think having seen these characters on a screen takes away a lot of the imagination which makes reading magical.

Ich mag dieses Buch richtig gerne! Es hat sich nie gezogen und ich liebe diesen Schreibstil. Ich selbst habe die Serie noch nicht geguckt, aber ich denke, das wird nicht mehr lange dauern. Leider habe ich noch bis vor Kurzem in einer kleinen Leseflaute gesteckt, aber dieses Buch hat mich herausgeholt. Mir waren alle Charaktere sehr sympathisch und ich liebe diese Kapitelanfänge. Das Buch ist generell sehr humorvoll geschrieben, aber leider hat noch ein bisschen gefehlt, um ein 5-Sterne-Read zu werden, aber sonst eine klare Leseempfehlung.

“There were rules among friends, commandments, really, and the most important one was Thou Shalt Not Lust After Thy Friend's Sister.” It was a lovely start into the series, you get to know all the Bridgerton siblings and really love them right away. In terms of the romantic story between Daphne and Simon that is in the focus in this book was very nice and enjoyable to read. There were a lot of obstacles and also secrets on Simon's side between them and also kind of betrayal from both of them. In the end they manage to overcome what's standing between them and really found their happy ending! A very good start for what's to come in the other books.

1.5 ⭐️ I already knew the plot thanks to the Netflix series, so there were no real surprises. I loved the banter between Daphne and her brothers! But I really missed Eloise. The writing style was mediocre at best. But there is a very problematic scene in this book and I think that it belittles rape. And then this epilogue... for me it just wasn't believable! Simon spent years not wanting kids and then Daphne comes along, rapes him to conceive... and then convinces Simon to have millions of kids, and he just agrees? After years of denying yourself of something, I don't think it would be that easy to change your thinking. I wanted to see a bit more struggle from Simon to change his opinion about kids (or, maybe even don't change his opinion at all. Because you don't NEED kids to be happy)

Delightful slow burn with very fun sibling relationships on the side. The only issues I had with this book were two scenes where the power dynamic between the protagonists icked me out (but at least it went in both directions, I guess?), Daphne's introduction being quite "not like other girls"-y, and very few weirdly phrased passages. Otherwise, very fun fake-dating slow-burn (two of my favorite tropes) with lots of banter between the romantic leads, as well as with her family.

Ich muss leider sagen, dass ich schon bei der Serie kein großer Simon Fan war. Ich mag ihn einfach so gar nicht und daher fand ich den ersten Teil der Bridgerton Reihe auch nur so semi. 🥲 Hab mich stellenweise so durch die Seiten gequält und hauptsächlich wegen Daphne und der anderen Charaktere weitergelesen. Für mich bisher der schwächste Teil der Reihe leider. 🥺😮‍💨

Es hat wirklich Spaß gemacht, das Buch zu lesen. Allerdings hat Simon einige cholerische Tendenzen, die nicht problematisiert werden. Klar, es spielt in einer anderen Zeit.... Daphnes Verhalten (ihr wisst welche Szene) wird für mich ebenfalls zu einfach gelöst. Ich hätte mir auch gewünscht, dass die vielen Nebencharaktere, die Familienmitglieder etc eine stärkere Rolle spielen, das kommt aber vmtl daher , dass ich zuerst die Fernsehserie kannte. Auch Daphne finde ich als Charakter nicht überzeugend, außer dass Sie verliebt ist und gern ein Baby hätte erfährt man nicht viel. Hat sie Hobbies, gibt es ein Thema für das sie sich besonders interessiert? Ich finde sie ein wenig einseitig... Alles in allem einfach eine kurzweilige gut geschriebene Unterhaltung die trotz ihrer Schwächen die dazu geführt hat, dass ich direkt zum zweiten Band gegriffen habe.

3,5☆ Beides hat Suchtpotenzial. Das das Buch aber so kontrovers geschrieben wurde, hat mich sehr gewundert. Mal davon abgesehen, dass Daphne nicht über den Akt uvm. aufgeklärt wurde und Duke dieses Unwissen komplett ausgenutzt hat, hat er sie aber auch durchgängig angelogen. Der plötzliche Geistesblitz kam mir etwas zu weit her geholt, hatte das in der Serie besser in Erinnerung. Trotzdem war ich ab S.60 circa komplett im Buch drin und wollte es nicht mehr weglegen. Lese die anderen denke auch noch.

Well... here we go. I was looking forward to reading this since I finished watching the TV series which I really loved. But alas, I was disappointed. To be fair, I really enjoyed the first half of the book. The build up, the banter between Daphne and Simon, the society and the Bridgertons kept it interesting. However, the second half got successively worse. I got sick of all the male archaic behavior of both Simon and Daphne’s brothers. It was the typical aggressive alpha stuff like “you’re my wife and you are mine and thus I am allowed to control you” and the “I am her big brother and I am going to violently protect her even though she doesn’t want it”. I am sorry but I just hate those manipulative and overly controlling male characters. That’s some toxic masculinity if I’ve ever seen one. And then, you might guess it, there was THAT scene. I already despised it in the tv show, but at least Daphne knew what she had done and that she had abused Simon. In the book, she has to think about it for a long time before she realizes that she acted against his consent, and then she didn’t even regret it! Gaaaaahhhh! I thought I might overcome this scene like I did with the show, but afterwards I really didn’t care for either of them, nor for their Happy End. All in all I am very sad that I didn’t like the book as much as I had hoped, and it left me annoyed and disappointed.

First of all, der Plot und die Charaktere weichen von der Serie ab bzw. die Serie eher vom Buch. Wer erwartete die Serie hier nachlesen zu können, wird also enttäuscht. Das Buch ist mehr auf die einzelnen Charaktere fokussiert und hat weniger noch eine weitere Story im Hintergrund wie es in der Serie der Fall ist. Das ist aber keineswegs schlimm, sondern ein anderer Blickwinkel auf Simons und Daphne's Geschichte - Serie und Buch ergänzen sich fast! Simon mochte ich im Buch bedeutsam mehr als in der Serie, (auch wenn ich die Serie liebe) ich fand, er hatte auch mehr Charaktertiefe und war einfach einen Ticken sympathischer. Das ganze Buch ist humorvoll und nett geschrieben. Es ist ganz schön zu lesen!

I love it - selbst beim mal lesen, wird mir nicht langweilig und ich finde es genauso spannend wie zuvor. Ich mag die Charaktere und die Beziehung zwischen den Bridgerton Geschwistern. Das erste Buch bleibt auch mein Favorit, denn Simon und Daphne sind so menschlich und ehrlich, dass ich sie mir auch in der Realität gut vorstellen kann. Wer eine leichte Lektüre möchte, die einen mit guter Laune zurück lässt, sollte die Reihe unbedingt anfangen.

Die Handlung an sich war mir nicht neu, da ich die Serie bereits kenne.Allerdings hat mich das nicht gestört und Daphne & Simon sind wirklich die Spitze des historischen Fake Datings.Die gesellschaftlichen Situationen mit ihren Gepflogenheiten fand ich besonders interessant und wie diese die Entwicklung und das Verhalten der Charaktere beeinflusse.Daphne ist von ihrer Art sehr sympathisch.Sie ist schlagfertig, tough, stark, witzig und das alles ohne dadurch weniger eine Lady zu sein.Allerdings erschweren es ihr auch genau diese Eigenschaften, die sie dank ihrer Nähe zu ihren älteren Brüdern hat, einen Ehemann zu finden.Bei Simon wurden vor allem seine emotionale Lage und sein innerlicher Zwiespalt sehr deutlich und man konnte ihn gut verstehen. Seine Entwicklung kommt für den Leser realistisch rüber und hat mir gut gefallen.Auch Daphnes Brüder mochte ich alle sehr, weshalb ich mich auf die weitern Teile im Bridgerton-Universum freue. Besonders, da man hier nur sehr wenig über die anderen Bridgerton-Schwestern erfahren hat.Die Beziehungsentwicklung von Daphne und Simon war anfangs wirklich süß und interessant, jedoch finde ich, dass sich die doch sehr ernsten Probleme am Ende zu schnell und einfach geklärt haben.Generell waren die Themen zwar wirklich spannend und wichtig und die emotionale Bedeutung für die Charaktere kam gut rüber, aber sie haben sich dann doch zu wenig damit auseinandergesetzt und ihre eigenen Taten zu schnell gerechtfertigt, ohne sonderliche Konsequenzen.Auch hat mich diese Frauen-als-Besitztum Wortwahl teils sehr gestört, aber da muss man eben die zeit bedenken, zu der das Ganze spielt.

!!!SPOILER!!! All die Schönheit, die das Buch hat, wurden für mich instantly zerstört und im Nachhinein verabscheue ich Daphne und die Autorin. Kann absolut nicht nachvollziehen, wie No means No gesagt wird und im nächsten Paragraphen wird Sex erzwungen. Absolut nicht okay. Und dann noch zu sagen, dass die Taten nicht bereut wurden. Hach so romantisch. Fuck this book.

Nachdem man die Serie kennt, ist es schwierig sich mit der etwas dünneren, weniger komplexen Buchverlage anzufreunden. Dennoch ist die Geschichte rund um Simon und Daphne sehr gut geschrieben, ist kurzweilig und mitreißend. Ich habe das Buch sehr genossen und irgendwann auch aufgehört mit der Serie zu vergleichen. Die anderen Bände möchte ich auch noch lesen.

I have to be honest: I haven‘t heard if this book before watching the Netflix series. A reason for that being that I’m sadly not a huge fan of historical fiction. But because I enjoyed watching the series that much I wanted to read the book(s). And for the most part I enjoyed it too. It‘s partly due to watching Bridgerton, getting a first glimpse at the characters and now being intrigued. It was exciting to read the book that the first season is based on, it‘s so well done. I know a lot of people rather read the books first before watching a movie/series. I was already aware of some things that were purposely changed for the adaptation but that didn’t bother me too much. I love the characters. I don‘t even need to start naming ones I absolutely don‘t like, because they‘re all interesting and important for different reasons. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I was so enthralled that I couldn‘t put the book down. That only shows that the author did a brilliant job, the reading experience was so much fun. I know that one scene is/was highly discussed, and yeah, it‘s a lot. To me, it unfortunately diminishes how good the book is. As I said before, historical fiction isn‘t my thing, but I enjoyed this series so far due to how it was written and how JQ brought the characters to life. Since I rarely read this genre I‘m not certain to what extent this influenced different aspect (I‘m sure it did, but you get the idea). I can definitely recommend the book. I think it‘s well done and I could think of a few friends who would enjoy it.

I have questions (other than who Lady Whistlewhatever is): Most of all, are we doing period drama or are we doing gossip girl? Nothing wrong with either, but the mixture is unfamiliar, to say the least. For history buffs, that might feel a bit like "tried, but not hard enough" , though it certainly doesn't take away from the overall enjoyment. An enjoyment that excludes the often discussed chapter that kind of leaves a bitter aftertaste, especially in the otherwise rather fun, flirty, positive book.

Die Story von Daphne und Simon, die mit einem ständigen auf und ab einhergingen und mich mitfiebern lassen haben! 😱 trotz, dass ich die Bridgerton Serie vorab gesehen habe, konnte ich das Buch kaum zur Seite legen. Es gab so viele Hintergrundinformationen und wurde auch aus der Sicht und der Gefühle von Simon beschrieben, was in der Serie einfach nicht rüber kommt. Man entwickelt regelrecht Mitgefühl und Verständnis für Simon. Absolute Empfehlung, auch nachdem man die Serie geschaut hat! ☺️

I liked it - it's a nice, quick read that can be enjoyed even between other books. The regency setting is perfectly romantic and Lady Whistledown brings just the right amount of drama into the mix. But there is one factor or scene in the book I didn't enjoy at all, which is the one where Daphne takes sexual advantage of an intoxicated and almost unconscious Simon. Romanticizing the image of a non-consensual sexual act might add a bit of a power change to the book, but in my opinion it's just a dick move.

Bücher und Serien sind für mich zwei verschiedene Welten, die ich gut getrennt voneinander konsumieren kann. Da Bridgerton trotz aller Schwächen als Serie sehr, sehr unterhaltsam war, habe ich spontan jetzt "The Duke and I" gekauft. Und es ist genauso unterhaltsam wie die Serie! Im Unterschied zur Adaption stehen hier wirklich nur Simon und Daphne im Vordergrund. Die anderen Geschwister kommen teilweise nur dem Namen nach vor, genau wie die Featheringtons. Anthony ist hier vor allem großer Bruder, der sich duelliert und das Glück seiner Schwester im Kopf hat, aber hat keine eigene Liebesgeschichte, genauso wenig wie die restlichen Geschwister eine Storyline bekommen. Auch gibt es keine Konkurrenten in Liebesangelegenheiten - weil nur 400 Seiten und nicht 8 Folgen gefüllt werden müssen. Die Grundstuktur der Geschichte bleibt aber in Serie und Buch gleich und vor allem die Charakterdynamik hat mir hier sehr gefallen. Eine sehr fragwürdige Szene in der Serie ist hier etwas erträglicher, da man natürlich mehr Innenansicht hat bei Daphne und Simon. Der Schreibstil ist auf Englisch so leicht zu folgen und fesselt. Ich werde bestimmt weiterlesen, wie es mit den Bridgerton Geschwistern weitergeht und was Julia Quinn sonst noch geschrieben hat!

I really enjoyed the book. Both Daphne and Simon were great characters. The writing style of the author was easy to read and even though English isn't my first language, I still flew through the pages. I really liked Daphne and Simon's relationship, especially the banter. But there was one scene that I really didn't like where Daphne did something in my opinion truly unacceptable. Though, she realized admitted that her actions were wrong and selfish. I also wished we could've seen more of the Bridgertons interact with each other. This book is an overall enjoyable read that made me laugh a lot of times. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy funny and fluffy romances with not too many serious themes.

I liked the TV show better. It actually takes more time to flesh out the characters (and side characters!) and has a lot more tongue-in-cheek humor. Also Daphne and Simon have way more chemistry in the show. In the book it's this typical instant attraction thing. Simon is oogling her the first time they met and thinking about kissing her right then and there. Wth that wouldn't cross most peoples mind at current times, much less in early 19th century ton society?! And wow that first meeting between Daphne and Simon was soooooo drawn out. The whole back and forth to leave her other suitor (forgot the name) there or taking him home or whatever. If I want undecisiveness I just ask my husband what he wants for lunch! That scene definitely could have done with some editing. 2 stars for rape, a miscarriage that is not called one, and constantly talking about Daphne as if she were a thing and not an actual human being ("We have to decide if we're going to let you keep Daphne" wtf she's not a dog?!) I also noticed that romance books are better on paper than audio book. That way I can skip the cheesy love-proclaiming and overwritten sex scenes. I'm looking forward to the second season of Bridgerton, but will skip the book series.

I honestly really liked this one, I liked the characters, the humor, the story itself, it was just really well rounded for me. Yes some things were problemtic and I did not like how some things happened. Also Daphne does not respect boundaries. However it did not lower the enjoyability as much for me, even though I understand if it did.
