What a book! In the second volume of the Empire of the Vampire series we follow Gabriel and Dior after he saved her from sure death. They are accompanied by Gabriels sister Celene and duskdancer Phoebe. Traveling the destroyed lands in search of the solution to daysdeath, the group encounter a lot of Dead and a lot of horrors, trying hard to cling onto hope and saving as many people as possible. Like part one of this series by Jay Kristoff, this book is so beautifully written. I absolutely love the way the story is told. In this book the reader also gets to hear parts of the story from another persons perspective, which adds a nice touch and also puts some of Gabriels stories into perspective. I really enjoyed reading this book. Like in book one the mission of Gabriel and Dior seems hopeless, since Gabriel is imprisoned by the Chastain and telling their story, but I couldn’t help hoping nonetheless that they might succeed. Near the end if the book it seemed as though they had maneuvered themselves into an unfortunate position but on the last few pages hope was restored. I am incredibly excited to read the next book of this series and at the same time really sad, that I (and all the other faithful readers ;) ) have to wait so long for the next book. But, I’m sure it will be worth the wait. Definitely recommend these books!

Sobbing as I write this review. Thanks, Jay. Anyhoo, definitely a LOT darker than the first book, and equally as gripping. I devoured it and loved every second of it. Even though some of those seconds were pure emotional torture ahaaaa. How the FUCK am I supposed to wait for the next book!?!?

Ich bin zu großen Teilen ein Fan von den Büchern von Jay Kristoff (nur Lifelike mochte ich nicht, das habe ich abgebrochen und Stormdancer kenne ich nicht). Es war anfangs trotz des Personenverzeichnisses sehr schwer in die Geschichte zu kommen, da ich Band 1 im Juli oder August 2022 gelesen hatte. Nach einer Weile habe ich mich in der Welt und mit den Figuren wieder zurechtgefunden. Weiterhin finde ich die Erzählweise dieses Buches sehr spannend. Ich mochte es, dass Gabe diesmal chronologisch erzählt hat. In Band 1 war es nervig, dass er immer zwischen zwei Zeitebenen hin und her gesprungen ist und ich so immer aus der Geschichte gerissen worden bin. Zum Ende von Band 1 hatten sich die Zeitlinien getroffen, sodass es jetzt chronologisch weitergehen konnte. Dennoch hat der Autor etwas Neues machen wollen und einen zweiten Erzähler dazugeholt, was ich teilweise wirklich spannend fand. Die Welt ist - wie wir sie kennen - sehr düster. Man darf sein Herz an niemanden hängen, denn niemand ist sicher. Was immer wieder geschehen ist: man dachte, es kann nicht mehr schlimmer werden und Jay Kristoff hat mich eines Besseren belehrt. Dadurch war das Buch an vielen Punkten sehr, sehr schwermütig. Und die Lust zu lesen hat etwas gelitten. Im letzten Drittel circa kommen leichtere Momente, die mich so gecatcht haben, dass das Lesen wieder sehr viel Spaß gemacht hat. Und dann kam das Ende - holy moly. Ich freue mich jetzt so sehr auf den dritten Teil.

Einfach meine absolute Lieblingsreihe im Moment. Ich habe ein Jahr lang höchst ungeduldig gewartet und alle Kolleginnen damit genervt, die es mir dann zum Geburtstag geschenkt haben, weil sie toll sind. Habe es verschlungen, habe gelacht und geweint und war sauer, wie immer, wenn ich etwas von Kristoff lese.

Remarkable. It takes its time, but it's worth every hour, every second. This book is a declaration of love towards high fantasy, with tragically beautiful characters, a devouring story and extraordinary plottwists. A highlight of the year, written with ambition and with a string of poetically woven words the reader gets unrevocable sucked into the empire of the damned.

Now where do I start here? This book left me with so many feelings and I struggle to put any of them into words. To be honest, I already wrote a review about it but that didn’t do it the justice it deserves. So here I am, writing a new one. And I am still at a loss of words. It is rare, I think, that the second book of a series is able to surpass its predecessor in nearly every way and yet EotD did it. The first book, Empire of the Vampire, was already an absolute masterpiece and I considered it the best book I’ve ever read. But DAMNED managed to be even better. Kristoff’s creative writing style full of unique descriptions and metaphors, mixed with the merciless cruelty of the story itself was once more simply stunning. The additional depth of worldbuilding, compared to book one, was great, just like the development of every single character. The story itself was even more bloody and brutal than before and my heart was shattered so very often along the way through so many different situations. Honestly, what is it with books that put you through emotional torture that I adore them so much? Whatever it is, Kristoff mastered this art of emotional damage. And sometimes I wondered if he hates his own characters, given what hell he makes them suffer. This book made me laugh, swear, doubt and cry. If he wasn’t my favourite author already, he would be now. This book is just so unbelievably good. It is with everything it offers, with every new swearword, with every bloody twist simply unmatched. I can’t wait for the third and final volume of this series. And I allow myself to wonder: will Kristoff manage to keep this level of greatness? I force myself to cautiously lower my expectation for everything to come, but at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if the next book will cut even deeper – and set the scalebar for everything else even higher. I curse and admire this man so much.

Empire of the Damned fängt da an wo Band 1 aufgehört hat. Und hat noch fünf Schippen draufgelegt. Ich dachte Band 1 wäre gut. Aber das hier war gigantisch. So viele Fragen beantwortet, neue dazu gekommen und noch nie hat es so viel Spaß gemacht Theorien auszutauschen. War es grausam? Ja! Wesentlich grausamer als der erste Teil. Aber gleichzeitig war es so unglaublich schön. Eine Geschichte, die zutiefst menschlich ist. Glaube, Hoffnung, Liebe, Verrat, Angst, Hass, Trauer, Wut. Alles ist hier vereint. Und irgendwie überall die Frage nach dem großen Ganzen. Ich liebe, liebe, liebe es und es war die Wartezeit von zweieinhalb Jahren sowas von wert!!! Auf das Band drei möglichst schnell kommen möge! Für den Gral!

Mit Gabes Worten zu beginnen F*** my face. Ein Buch voller Trauma, Angst, Mord, Blut. Eine Achterbahn der Gefühle. Ist aber auch schwer da irgendwie eine Review zu schreiben, weil einfach sprachlos. Grandioser Band 2. Das Ende war einfach so ein brainfuck Moment. Also entweder Gabriel erzählt die Geschichte wirklich ehrlich oder es ist die größte shitshow die in Band 3 einfach aufgelöst wird und Gabbie da mit erhobenen Fingern raus läuft.

Ich weiß gar nicht wie man dieses Buch beschreiben soll. Es ist so voll Herzschmerz, Hass, Blut, Kämpfen, Verrat, Lügen und Liebe. Regelmäßig wurde mir das Herz gebrochen und wieder Hoffnung gegeben. Die Atmosphäre war gigantisch. Ich fühlte mit den Protagonisten mit, ihre Beziehungen wurden bereits im ersten Teil gebildet und hier unglaublich emotional weitergeführt. Die Charaktere und die Beziehungen entwickelten sich stimmig weiter. Neue und alte Geheimnisse wurden gelüftet. Gegen Ende gab es einen epischen Kampf, der das Herz zum bluten brachte und endete in einem Cliffhanger der mich schreien ließ. Bevor der dritte Teil kommt, werde ich den ersten wieder mit Freude rereaden und den zweiten auch. Eine meiner Lieblingsgeschichten, die ihresgleichen sucht!
