I just absolutely love the writing. It’s full of unexpected turns and tension, pain and war. So much happened, i just never wanted to put it down! I do recommend making a small list of the characters as there are so many so u don’t have to flip back and read again who they were. I did it and it helped me so much to keep track!

Also ich muss echt immer wieder wiederholen: Dieses Buch ist voller brutaler Kriegsverbrechen, die explizit ausgeführt werden und definitiv nichts für schwache Nerven. Aber die Charaktere sind so gut durchdacht, man lernt so viel über die chinesische Geschichte und es ist zwischendurch noch witzig. Aber wirklich triggerwarnungen beachten ❗️

Kuang geht mit ihrer Erzählung wie üblich dorthin, wo es wehtut. Der zweite Teil der" Poppy War" Trilogie war (gefühlt) insgesamt zwar seltener brutal als der erste, dafür gab es für mich in diesem Buch einige der schlimmsten Stellen, die ich je gelesen habe (und das trotz meiner früheren Vorliebe für Psychothriller). Wie bereits im ersten Teil ist die Geschichte eigentlich das Tagebuch eines Kriegs, eingehüllt in eine Fantasygeschichte (die widerrum angelehnt an die chinesische Geschichte und Mythologie ist). Wir setzen kurz nach dem Ende des ersten Teils an und begleiten Rin (die nach wie vor eine gute, weil menschliche, fehlerhafte Protagonistin ist - auch wenn ich sie nicht mag) auf ihrer Reise zur Rache. Dabei werden in diesem zweiten Teil einige neue Fraktionen und Personen eingeführt und das World Building insgesamt noch einmal deutlich vertieft und "diversifiziert". Interessant dabei ist, dass es zusätzlich zu Rin eigentlich kaum einen Charakter im Buch gibt, der sympathisch ist bzw. gut wegkommt. Jeder kämpft am Ende des Tages für sich selber und versucht, Rin für sich selbst zu instrumentalisieren, und Loyalitäten wechseln quasi kapitelweise - wie zu erwarten in einer Bürgerkriegszeit. Am Ende des Buchs (vor allem zum Schluss) bleibt daher bei mir ein krasser Hass auf nahezu alle aktiven Charaktere :D solche Reaktionen können bei mir eigentlich nur wenige Bücher provozieren und das zeigt zum einen, wie tief mich die Geschichte in sich hineingezogen hat und zum anderen wie wirklich großartig der Schreibstil der Autorin ist. Achja, auch dieses Mal sollte definitiv eine handvoll Triggerwarnungen ausgeschrieben werden. Insgesamt erfüllt dieses Buch die undankbare Rolle des Mittelteils einer Trilogie sehr gut, es setzt den Ton für das große Finale, vor dem es mich etwas graut, aber auf das ich mich nun auch sehr freue.

When you're crying at the beginning of the page and then laughing by the end of it. This one focused more on the relationships in Rins life and it was devistatingly great. I'm scared to read the last book now though, somehow the stakes just seem to get higher and higher and higher...

This is not a book to read when you want cozy happiness. It’s brutal, it’s depressing, it hits you with everything thinkable. Our heroes are actually sad excuses for heroism, they are traumatised, have unhealthy coping mechanisms (violence, self-harm, addiction) and cannot seem to get a lucky break. While in a lot of other stories, the heroes (or at least most of them) manage to turn the tide with some clever master plan when faced with unwinnable situations, they… do not. While all this might seem like I think it’s a bad book, that’s not quite true: it is very raw, frankly disturbing and yet so powerful and important for all the ugly aspects of war.

i fear i don’t even have to say anything but i will run my mouth regardless. the way that kuang writes her characters so well in a plot so thought through in a world with so many links to real historical events..it truly makes me marvel at her skills but hey. that’s just me. here a few pointers that killed me - love chaghan so much i hope he gets a bigger role again in the third book like truly his sisters death and every mention of his relationships (especially the relationship to rin like they are so so dear to me) and his person just make me cry - they were fucked for how nezhas brother died like truly. - kitay and rin??? their bond??? their friendship??? that’s just. yeah. yup. mhm. - nezha….oh how i’m rooting for you…you’re not making it easy - i fucking love venka they could never make me hate her i don’t give a fuck - rin. rin. my love my everything i just. man. i don’t know but something tells me kuang just fucking loooooooves making her characters suffer a long long time in various ways and like lets them linger with anger and grief. eating it up though. i get it. i am just scared for her and everyone dear to her bc UMMMM THE CIKE??? MY BELOVEDS???? ENOUGH‼️‼️‼️ ANYWAY ILL LEAVE IT AT THAT. on to book 3

Eine spannende, gut geschriebene Fortsetzung. Es hat nicht ganz für 5 Sterne gereicht, da es sich für mich an einigen, wenigen Stellen etwas gezogen hat. Ansonsten fand ich das Buch sehr spannend, man hat wirklich viel erfahren und es gibt einige Plottwists. Teilweise konnte ich nicht aufhören zu lesen und ich habe auch viel an das Buch denken müssen. Ich dachte einige Male, dass ich wusste wohin die Story jetzt läuft, aber nein xD Ich hätte niemals damit gerechnet wohin sich einige Beziehungen entwickeln. Natürlich vorallem mit Rin und Kitay. Nezha ist und bleibt ein undurchschaubarer Charakter für mich und ich denke, dass noch einiges passieren wird. Ich war außerdem stark beeindruckt von Rins Entwicklung, vorallem natürlich was bestimmte Substanzen angeht. Ich bin sehr gespannt wohin die Reise geht.

Ich fand's definitiv besser als das erste Buch! Was ich am meisten mag ist die Welt und worldbuliding, anstatt die Charaktere I gotta be honest. Also ich glaub auch nicht, dass man die Charaktere wirklich mögen soll weil hier jeder scheiße baut, auf irgendeinem Level. Aber wenn ihr eure Protagonisten mögen wollt, Lest das hier nicht lmao. Da sind Side characters schon sehr viel mehr lovable. Mir fällt auf, dass ich so War Stories, oder zumindest so die Details wie es einem in so schlimmen Situationen ergeht, ziemlich interessant finde. Mein Lieblings Terry Prachett Buch ist auch eins, was für seine Verhältnisse ziemlich ernst ist und sie auf eine militärische Gruppe im Krieg fokussiert und die interpersonalen Konflikte welche dort existieren, untereinander aber auch mit dem Krieg selbst. Das ist ähnlich in diesem Buch. I gotta say tho, es ist frustrierend wie oft sich Sachen wiederholen. Und ich weiß, that's the point, aber wie oft Rin ihre Meinung ändern oder schwört, dass sie niemals wieder einer Person vertrauen wird und dann nächstes Kapitel genau das wieder tut- IM SORRY it was annoying me a little bit. But she's also an immensely traumatized soldier with the fate of the world on her back, so fair enough I guess. Aber sonst fand ich's ganz gut :)

Es nützt nichts, wenn wieder einmal das halbe Buch ein Krampf ist. Ja, es ist gut geschrieben und noch besser recherchiert aber die Protagonistin ist es eben nicht. Sie hat zwei Gesichter, entscheidet sich ständig um und trifft dann wieder Entscheidungen, für die ich ihr gerne weh getan hätte. Der Aufbau des Schamanismus und die Entwicklung der Nebencharaktere waren hier mein Highlight, aber leider war auch dieses Buch wieder mehr okay als ein zukünftiger Favorit. Schade

I definitely enjoyed this book more than the first. The worldbuildung is great and the author is doing an outstanding job in portraying the political warfare and the consequences suffered by everyone. However I am still heavily struggling with the protagonist. Although I know Rin is pretty much written to be unlikable she makes it hard for me to enjoy the book to the fullest. I am also missing real emotional depth. Although I found the things happening to be incredibly shocking and horrible, the sober tone in which the scenes are written makes it very hard for me to feel the real devastation I am probably supposed to feel. I am a very easy crier but I didn’t shed a single tear. Unfortunately.

What an amazing sequel to the Poppy War. I marvel at the fact that this is written so perfectly, that even though there is a lot of talk about war strategies and politics and that the outcome of the war was slightly predictable, there is not a single page in this book that is boring. I had to force myself to stop reading. The plot is intriguing and the characters and their developments are breath taking. I loved that we got even more of the fabulous world building with history and religion/magic system. I was so intrigued by how good political, religious, racist and ideological aspects like we see them in our world through history and even nowadays are woven into this world. Like with the first book, please inform yourself regarding the trigger warnings! Although I doubt that you can't handle this one if you read the Poppy War and managed it. I'm burning for the third book and I hope that Rin will burn everything down. After all she's been through, I want her to get all the revenge in the world. And my baby Kitay must be protected at all costs please.
