This book is a fever dream. But a good one!Starting with MC Phillip Firecracker's demeanor toward each and everyone, including his coerced-through-a-signed-box-of-crunch-berries-unpaid-intern-assistant-slash-best-slash-only-friend Jordan, the cutest pet piglet named Fudge Rivera, the quirkiest nine year old know-it-all Beau, and ending with constantly calling the director Bernadette Brenda-Carole (okay, while she's calling Rivers Lake, so it seems fair). And there is so much more that is just SO absurd but equally so funny. This is not a typical romance, maybe not even a typical romcom, but in being quirky and weird, it's its own thing and I've really had a good time! I also LOVED the activism for the pigs.I was unsure about the first person single POV at first, but it worked really well for this story. And it really is a sloooow burn. If you are looking for insta love/lust, a quickly established relationship or even a whole lot of spice, this isn't for you. There is one spicy scene, so it's also not non spicy, but the rest of the story is definitely more important. It's not five stars for me, because at times it was a bit TOO chaotic and/or quirky for me and I had struggles understanding what really happened and what was part of the series - and I actually had some problems with the level of weirdness and accepting quirks of characters I probably couldn't stand in another setting. Also, in my eyes a bit emotionality was lacking, especially regarding Rivers' ex wife and the origin hate story was a bit too dull, with everyone laughing at Phillip twenty years ago and suddenly the texanian town is suuuper accepting and tolerant toward queerness. It was still a totally solid book over all and I had a good time reading it - these are absolutely minor points of criticism, but that's the explanation for it being only 4 stars.
