This was a mid read at first, but turned into a hate read somewhere midway through. Because what even was the plot of this?! NOTHING happens. And you can‘t even argue that the story is more character driven because NONE of them had ANY character development whatsoever. Grace went in as a sunshine, came out as one. Cal‘s only character trait is that he‘s NICE and that stayed the same throughout too. (He also was an idiot the whole time) What was the point in making him 30 years old when the age gap was never an issue, only gave me the ick because he was hanging out with college kids the whole time. What was the point in giving Grace the assault backstory when she never really showed any issues or trauma that she had to overcome? (At least none that DID anything for the story, really) The whole thing was DRAGGGGING, the conversations were repetitive and as I said, NOTHING happens. The whole issue with Cal‘s mom and her boyfriend was full of clichés and predictable to no end. This family dynamic could have been an interesting plot point, but since all characters in this story are either black or white, there wasn‘t a single unexpected or interesting scene with them. And don‘t get me started on the whole romance because this was all so freaking tacky that I cringed way more often than I could count.
