Smugglers on Romney Marsh
3,75β Another nice book from KJ Charles π A bit of a weaker one, but nonetheless, I really enjoyed it, moreso the couple than the story itself. It took a while to set everything up and could have been a bit shorter in the beginning/middle, but the end was really exciting. Gareth's father, who he hasn't talked to in 20 years, suddenly dies, making him the new baronet. So, he leaves London for Romney Marsh to sort out his fathers affairs. But they do things different in the Marsh and soon he has to deal with smugglers, one of which turns out to be a lover he just kinda broke up with, but now they have to work together again. This is the easiest way to summarize this rather convoluted beginning. It wasn't really confusing, but it took a while until I understood in which direction the story would go. Still, it's nothing straightforward, with a direct goal or anything. Gareth just gets bothered by people and doesn't know why. Finding out is kind of the mystery, but I wasn't that interested in it, to be honest π But I enjoyed everything about their relationship, the Doomsday family (as is the title of the series, Doomsday Books), and the Marsh is an interesting setting. I have to say, though, I was also a bit cross with Gareth in the beginning, with his hypocritical sense of justice, but it also made for nice character development. All in all, a nice book. Looking forward to more from KJ Charles.
