I was excited to read this book since I read some of the author’s work before. However, the entire book seems a bit weird to me. Rachel and Ethan apparently hate each other but this doesn’t stop them from constantly writing each other letters in which they tell one another about every single thing that’s happening in their lives. After she decides to quit her Semester at Sea (which is something I didn’t know about until now, a very interesting study abroad experience!) Rachel starts at SBU. Coincidentally, she moves in with Ethan! But they obviously still hate each other. They just started to have sex. And suddenly – wow, what a surprise! – he realises that she’s the “love of his life”. He definitely doesn’t know how to show it because they’re behaviour is incredibly immature. There’s a weird subplot about him wanting to be a writer but it’s rarely mentioned. It acts as plot device though because his father wants him continue the family business, so there’s a lot of unnecessary drama going on. In the end it’s all magically resolved because his father has a realisation that Ethan’s meant to be a writer and that he’s making “the biggest mistake in his life” by pursuing a business major. In the end, his writing was so beautiful that he even wrote a romance novel about himself and Rachel! Wow, form a line ladies, he’s the real deal. He’s a man of many words: “Fuck you.” - “I’m too upset to even think about fucking you right now.” “You know that’s not what I meant.” - “That’s what you should mean.” And speaking of unnecessary family drama, Rachel has her own (of course she does!): she doesn’t accept her father’s new wife because she used to be the best friend of Rachel’s mother. But all this is quickly forgotten in just one page. I expected more and even though there’s so much that annoyed me, I couldn’t put the book away. Still, it doesn’t deserve more than two stars.
