I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. I don't really know where to start. I really like the general concept of the book, especially the worldbuilding. I don't think I've ever read a story set in a tidally locked world, I love this! My main issue was that a lot of things were told rather than shown, which made it hard for me to connect with the characters at times. I struggle to sympathise with them other things I can't see. That was especially the case with the relationship between Migo and his mother, the queen. We're constantly told how she's evil and abusive and hates him and it greatly affects Migo as a character, but we barely see any of it actually happening. It's why I didn't really care about his chapters for the first 2/3 of the book, because he keeps thinking about his mother and there was nothing to connect to about it. As for the pacing, I would have liked to spend more time with Migo and Katsi together. Their main interaction with each other only began around 67%. I think their relationship would have benefited from more screen time. The romance really caught me off-guard, I felt like they didn't know each other well enough to feel that way yet. I would have loved to see the ending executed in a more plot twist kind of fashion. It felt a bit anti-climatic that the characters talked about what they were going to do and then executed their plan exactly as discussed without any issues. Overall, I liked the book more than I appear to in this review, lol. It is a decent debut and with the author's writing improving over time, it definitely has solid build-up for a sequel. Also, a thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review his book in advance.
