This was a good first volume. It took me a while to get into, but I love the setup and characters. They bring a lot of complicated feelings and mysteries with them, and I can't wait to have answers to my many questions. The story centers around two war generals of the kingdom of Chonghua. The aloof Mo Xi and the likable Gu Mang. They were friends, brothers in arms, and secretly, lovers. Until Gu Mang betrayed Chonghua and fought for the opposing Liao kingdom. After many years, he returns as a prisoner, but he isn't quite the same anymore, and Mo Xi doesn't know how to face him. I love this concept of lovers to enemies to... possibly lovers again 👀 I really feel with both characters, as I am sure there is a reasonable explanation for Gu Mangs betrayal. The questions surrounding that keep it exciting. But it took me a while to get into. The pacing is relatively slow (which I am used to with longer danmei novel series), and it mostly takes place in one area, the imperial capital. We get to know the characters and establish their current feelings about... the situation. Mo Xi is kinda going crazy because he hates Gu Mang so much, but then there are moments where he remembers the good times and he is obsessed with finding out the truth about why Gu Mang betrayed him. I also really enjoyed the side characters so far. Yue Chenqing is a little idiot, but in a good way 😂 And I surprisingly like the Emperor because he is so funny. I don't trust him, but I had to laugh a lot about that one meeting and his "catchphrase" 'useless trash.' 😂 Well, and then there is the actual trash, aka Murong Lian. The perfect character to hate. I wonder if he makes it to the end 👀 It ends with a pretty interesting case, and I am excited to find out more 😌

Einst kämpften die befreundeten Generäle Mo Xi und Gu Mang Seite an Seite im Krieg und aus Freundschaft wurde Liebe. Doch begeht Gu Mang Verrat an seinem Land und an seinen Geliebten. Dies muss Mo Xi schmerzlichst am eigenen Leibe erfahren. Nach 6 Jahren findet Mo Xi Gu Mang wieder, doch ist dieser nicht mehr im gleichen Zustand wie früher - er ist in jeder Hinsicht gebrochen. Mo Xi ist ein zurückhaltender, aber impulsiver Charakter - was man besonders beim Wiedersehen der beiden Geliebten erfährt. Seine inneren Konflikte stehen hierbei mit im Vordergrund - von Hass bis hin zu tiefster Traurigkeit wird man als Leser mit in den Bann gezogen. Die Emotionen und Gedankengänge des Protagonisten, aber auch der Nebencharaktere, werden ausführlich beschrieben, sodass die Geschichte eine wunderbare Tiefe erhält. Dies steht auch jederzeit im Vordergrund in der gesamten Geschichte. Das militärische Setting und die düstere Atmosphäre sind dabei eher Nebensächlichkeiten. Neben der Verbindung der beiden handelt die Geschichte zudem auch von Intrigen und wird gegen Ende noch mit actionreichen Szenen abgerundet. Jedoch muss ich sagen, dass mir gerade der Einstieg eher schwierig fiel. Es wird oft während der gesamten Geschichte zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart hin und her gesprungen und gerade am Anfang, wurde mir die Trennung nicht ganz verständlich, sodass ich manche Passagen öfter lesen musste. Nach einiger Zeit, hatte man sich mit den fließenden Rückblenden jedoch eher vertraut gemacht. Dies ist mein zweites Buch im asiatischen Setting und mir gefällt es sehr. Ich bin super gespannt wie es weiter geht - das Buch lässt am Ende viel Platz für Fantasie

Wow - this book was an emotional rollercoaster. Compared to other danmei I’ve read, this first volume is intense, both in tone and content. From the very beginning, Remnants of Filth hits hard. Mo Xi, a noble-born general, and Gu Mang, who rose from poverty, seem to have nothing in common. Yet through their time fighting side by side in the military, a deep bond grows- friendship, loyalty, and even passion. Gu Mang, though born into hardship, has a gentle heart and fights fiercely for his soldiers and the common people. This makes him a thorn in the side of the aristocracy, especially Murong Lian. Eventually, Gu Mang disappears - enslaved and abused by Murong Lian - only to reappear years later on the battlefield, now standing opposite Mo Xi as an enemy. When they meet again, Gu Mang has returned broken, both in body and spirit. He’s been reduced to a slave, thrown into a brothel, where anyone seeking revenge can do with him as they please. Despite the betrayal, despite the hatred Mo Xi feels, he cannot turn off the deep emotions he still has for Gu Mang. He wants to understand what truly happened - what led Gu Mang to betray their country, and him. I went into this story pretty blind, and I was honestly shocked by how heavy it was right from the start. It deals with extreme trauma, torture in all its forms, and the emotional wreckage of two souls torn apart. I had to put the book down more than once because the pain was so real, and both characters broke my heart. Mo Xi seems cold and unfeeling, but beneath that frosty surface is a fierce love for Gu Mang -so powerful it’s almost hard to believe it comes from the same person. And Gu Mang… born poor, treated as less than human, yet always smiling, always kind-and now seen as a traitor. Their dynamic is tragic, painful, and deeply compelling. Also, there’s quite a bit of spice in this one - more than I expected, especially given the censorship rules in China. But the scenes are written tastefully and feel emotionally earned within the story. I’m really looking forward to the next volume, and I truly hope these two get a moment to breathe - to begin healing, even if just a little.

Ganz ehrlich ich habe kein Plan was ich schreiben soll. Dieses Buch war eine Achterbahn der Gefühle. Es passierte immer was und man konnte es unmöglich weglegen. Naja, wenn da nicht die gute alte Schule wäre… Es war echt Folter dieses Buch auch nur für eine Sekunde wegzulegen. Ich war wie in meiner kleinen Welt. Der Aufbau der Geschichte , Schreibstil, Charaktere, Spannung und alles andere waren einfach nur ein Meisterwerk. Ich bin fassungslos und völlig geflasht von all dem was passiert ist. Ich hasse es das ich es bis jetzt vor mich hingeschoben habe und ich es nicht am Wochenende angefangen habe sondern erst heute wo ich es zwanghaft weglegen musste zwischendurch. Trotzdem in einem Tag verschlungen. Ich bin extrem froh das ich den 2. und den 3 Band schon zuhause habe und den 4. schon vorbestellt. Obwohl ich morgen Chemietest habe werde ich sobald ich zuhause ankomme wohl mit etwas anderem beschäftigt sein…. Wer diesem Buch keine Chance gibt hat echt was verpasst. Way too underrated.
