This isn't a political book and it's not about Nazi ideologies. It's more like the story of a young German lieutenant on the eastern front, how he's trying to get by as the situation goes from bad to worse, about the horror of Stalingrad, the cold, the hunger, and the death. It's also one of the most depressing books I've ever read. Definitely recommend.
