I read the text on the book cover to "Chicago" and thought it was an interesting and exciting book, so I decided to enter a giveaway and I was lucky to win. I must say that, at least the German edition, is marketed as a thriller, and I don't think it was one. There was not a moment when I thought: "I can't put this down, this is so exciting!". Every time some excitement was built, Mamet went on about the main character's war stories, which was not uninteresting and it was somehow connected to the main story, but it just got boring to me after some episodes. I think it is more a novel about a journalist living in Chicago in the 20s and his sad lovestory. I liked his writing style and I could paint vivid images in my head of every situation. I liked all the characters, especially one strong female character, which I would've liked to know more about. I don't know much about the gang situation of Chicago in the 20s, but I think the book was well researched and I could follow what was going on. All in all, it was an ok book and the writing-style saved it for me.
