Oh nO wE cAnT dAtE caUsE yOuRe so fAt
I think the premise of the book is quite interesting. It’s about two teenagers that could be classified as Outcasts in a sense. They both get to know each other and fall in love with each other even though they are from two different worlds in a way. But the characters in this book are almost written like a caricature of what people that differ from the norm are suppose to be like. The girl in this book is suppose to be an overweight girl who struggles with her weight and the way people treat her. In this book she is unironically „the fattest teen in america“ and she was apparently so fat at one point that she had to be CUT OUT of her home by the fire department, which ofc went viral. She was homeschooled and lost some weight and basically returns to her old high school where people are just cartoonishly mean towards her. It’s the usual skinny pretty cool girl is mean to the fat „ugly“ chick. At least the author tried to write her as somewhat confident but again it’s portrayed in a very cartoonish way as well. Like at one point she wears a bikini during a swimming lesson at her school and writes some corny message on her belly like „I belong“ with some sharpie and apparently this is suppose to be a very bold and ground breaking moment that ONCE AGAIN goes viral. That scene was so cringe I couldn’t even read it properly I had to skim through it. Generally the character is just over the top quirky but at least not insecure. The male protagonist also is a special butterfly he suffers from a neurological disorders which is why he can’t recognize faces. Once a person turns around he forgets what that person looks like and therefore he struggles to recognize even his own family members. I thought the way in which the disorder was portrayed was kind of interesting, and you could tell that the author has done her research and may have some personal experience with that. But this book seriously wants us to believe that the guy fell down a roof when he was 6, got 64 stitches, developed this disorder and … no one noticed? Like not even his family knows about this disorder? And for some reason he doesn’t tell anyone? Instead he just „charms“ his way through life and since he is the „attractive, cool guy , that plays basketball and has SwAgGeR“ it works? If you haven’t noticed by now the guy is suppose to be black or at least mixed 💀 it becomes very clear because the author cannot stop mentioning his „lion fro“ and his „swagger“. Don’t get me wrong white authors can definitely write poc characters I don’t think it’s a taboo. But I just hate the way these characters refer to themselves. It’s the equivalent to me writing a white character and then constantly referring to her „fair porcelain like skin“. Like who does that. These two characters meet because he borderline harasses her by doing some „fat girl rodeo“ where he basically held onto her for dear life until she punched him. And for some reason they have a special connection and she becomes the first person to know that he suffers from his disorder. For some reason they share this very intimate bond and nO onE eLsE unDeRstAnDs tHeM. I almost got diarreah when I read that he isn’t able to recognize anyone but the fat girl cause she is big 💀💀💀 later on she miraculously is the only person whose face he can actually remember and they fall in love and kiss. And apparently their relationship is suppose to be a big deal cause he is cool and has swagger and she is fat. Idk I struggled with weight myself but this was kinda corny. like pretty fat girls with attractive boyfriends exist. Idk what I am suppose to tell you. I did like the slow burn romance. And each chapter is written from a different perspective which I also liked. But yeah that’s about it.
