i actually have so much rage for david mitchell and this book. it keeps you reading, i’ll give you that. the prose is addictive, and the plot gives you just enough nibbles to keep you wanting more, but never, never enough to be satisfied. this book has commitment issues. it can’t stick to a genre, can’t stick to a character, and each chapter has its own plot (and enough plot holes to fill a granny square). the bad thing about this is that every new chapter starts off awful. it’s irritating to start anew, each new protagonist is hateful, only if you keep reading for long enough you realise that actually, you like the new protagonist. and BOOM! chapter’s done, on to the next. now this would all be fine, and i could move past it, if it weren’t for the last fucking chapter. good almighty god was that a bag of shit. what’s good, is that we’re back with holly. that is the only good part. every other aspect of the last chapter feels like david mitchell is trying to personally punish you, as a reader, for sticking through the 500 pages of not-explaining-the-world-building by describing, in excruciating and distressing detail, the world once climate change finally gets us. it’s unnecessary, it adds nothing of value to the book, it made me cry for an entire evening - and the only way it ties into the whole atemporal plot is for marines to swoop in last-minute, in the most half-assed unlikely deus-ex-machina plot i’ve ever had the misfortune of reading. apart from all the above problems, other things i would like to gripe about: - mitchell likes showing off. so many passages, especially in ed’s and crispin hershey’s chapter, we’re completely fucking ununderstandable. and not in a “if i concentrate hard enough and out the work in, i can see the intelligence of this sentence, so good for you for being clevrerer than me” kind of way. oh no. in a “i’m going to write the most unintelligible sentence known to man and print it unedited to make my readers feel stupid” type of way. - what the fuck happened to crispin? why did that girl just shoot him?? that was SO random, and it ties in nowhere !! even if she was trying to expose the horologists or the anchorites, it’s a poorly explained and unnecessary plot point that leads to nothing of value all in all, fuck david mitchell for getting me invested in a 612 page book that just ended up making me feel miserable

Hier gibt's, ähnlich zu Mitchells Wolkenatlas, wieder 6 kurze Romane auf einmal. Wieder findet man sich zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten und an unterschiedlichen Orten im Weltgeschehen wieder und auch die Protagonisten sind größtenteils alle auf die eine oder andere Weise miteinander verbunden. Diese Verbindung ist sehr phantasievoll gewählt und lässt sich kaum in wenigen Worten erklären. Nachdem ich den Mittelteil (der zieht sich etwas) überstanden hatte, konnte ich das Buch nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Was einen vorher komplett verwirrt und auch ein bisschen frustriert hat, wird (zugegeben nicht ohne Anspruch) sehr kryptisch und mysteriös aufgelöst. Selbst wenn man nur die Hälfte verstanden hat sollte das aber ausreichen um weiter zu lesen, der Rest kommt später. Jedenfalls war's bei mir so. Authentisch, einfühlsam, unglaublich intelligent geschrieben und ausführlich recherchiert. Ob es der Irankrieg aus Sicht eines westlichen Reporters oder die Gedankenwelt eines rebellischen Teenagers ist, ein Mensch der schon sein 50. Leben lebt oder einen Krieg der Überzeitlichen in einem übersinnlichen Universum, Mitchell kann einfach alles schreiben. Und dann auch noch die Art und Weise wie er das tut? Genial und mit einem wunderschönes Schreibstil. Ich weiß nicht, wann mich ein Buch das letzte mal so fasziniert und beeindruckt hat und ich das Lesen an sich, so genossen habe.

Verworren, übersinnlich und teils langatmig. Wenn ihr Lust auf einen Mix aus Realität, Seelenwanderung, Telekinese, Fantasy und aktuellen Themen wie Umwelt, Literaturwelt und Politik habt, dann habt ihr genau das richtige Buch. Ich habe es beendet und leider seit langer Zeit gedacht: Das habe ich alles nicht vollends verstanden und da sind noch zu viele Fragen.

I was both excited and scared to be disappointed because i was blown away by Cloud Atlas before (and all his other books, esp. Ghostwritten). so i was wondering how he would stay close to the themes he always uses (reincarnation, different voices/different times) and not be identical to his other works. I can safely say this is not like the other books. (Though i enjoyed all the nods and mentions of his older works in this one!). I loved Holly. I loved the 'background/not so much backround later on-fantasy' element. I loved all the different views and the glimpses we got of Hollys life through different people. It was just a very enjoyable, memorable, awesome read and i will def. reread it.

DNF, got halfway through but it fucked me up a lot, mentally. I needed a couple of days of distance from the book, and maybe one day I'll return to it. The writing is engaging and interesting, and the story as well, but I don't know, the second Chapters main character and the third chapter in general messed me up.

Ich denke ein bis zwei Kernaussagen sind auf jeden Fall rüber gekommen, aber leider war das Ende enttäuschend. Der große und wichtige Handlungsstrang der Geschichte wurde für mich einfach unzufrieden gelöst. Dennoch gab es auch schöne Kapitel und vor allem zu Beginn fand ich das Buch sehr spannend!

Nachdem ich dieses Hörbuch ein paar Tage habe sacken lassen, weiß ich immer noch nicht, wie ich einen vernünftigen Leseeindruck formulieren soll. Ich kann aber so viel sagen, dass diese Geschichte, gelesen von Johannes Steck, mein absolutes Hör-Jahreshighlight ist und Holly Sykes meine liebste Protagonistin. In dieser Geschichte stecken so viele skurrile Momente und Figuren, aber auch so viel Wahrheit bzw. Mahnung über unsere Gesellschaft und wohin sie uns vielleicht führen wird, dazu ist es auch noch spannend und die Figuren sind vielschichtig. Abgesehen davon ist das Hörbuch mit den Glockenschlägen, den Uhrwerkgeräuschen und natürlich dem großartigen Sprecher einfach toll gemacht!
