Eine sehr gut anlaufende Story, die, je länger sie geht, immer mehr verliert, weil man mehr und mehr merkt, was das hier nicht ist: nämlich ein Thriller. Hier ist nichts bedrohlich, weder die Situation, noch die Familienmitglieder. Wenn überhaupt wird eine kriminelle Handlung durchgeführt. Etwa 90 bis 100 Seiten vor Schluss fällt dann doch mal ein latent bedrohlicher Satz, dann passiert auch mal ganz am Ende was Gefährliches, aber im Grunde geht es lediglich um ein Familiengeheimnis, das sich durch ganz dolle Nachdenken löst. Das bekommt von mir nicht "nur" 3 Sterne, weil es entgegen der Aussage auf dem Cover kein Thriller ist, sondern, weil es ab einem bestimmten Punkt im Buch, nachdem es lange Zeit trotz nicht erfüllter Erwartungen wirklich gut war, immer uninteressanter wurde.

I struggled through the beginning/middle of the book because it didn't feel like we were moving forward for quite some time. That's also the reason it took me so long to finish the book. Also, I do have to say that I did not really care for Harriet too much until we discovered a little more about her mother's past towards the end. How the story wrapped up was quite interesting but I still wished that I would have cared more about the characters. That is why I was torn between two and three stars for this rating and ended up giving it 2,5 stars (but rounded up for the purpose of this goodreads rating).

Mein drittes Hörbuch von Ruth Ware. Die Stimme ist toll, genau richtig für die Story. Ich hätte der Geschichte 4 Sterne gegeben, wenn das Thema Tarot weniger Raum eingenommen hätte. Ich kann damit leider gar nichts anfangen. Glücklicherweise ist es nicht das Hauptthema des Buchs. Durchaus hörenswert.

Mir gefällt auch dieses Buch von Ruth Ware außerordentlich gut, in der Machart und durch die Abgeschiedenheit in diesem alten Gebäude bin ich total an Agatha Christie erinnert. Leichte Abzüge gibt es für mich, weil ich die Auflösung geahnt habe - auch wenn es nur eine von mehreren Theorien bei mir war!

I'm still thinking about the rating but it is something between 2 and 3 stars definitely. I had fun and the atmosphere was nice, but the whole story is so constructed. Suspend your disbelief A LOT. If there was a bit more communication, a bit less coincidence there would be no story at all. Also, I think the book does not know what it wants to be and hence is falsely advertised to some readers who may have some expectations. A thriller? A mystery? A contemporary with some mystery elements? I think that is due to the books Ruth Ware had written before - those were clearly thrillers with a dead body that shows up and a mystery that needs to be solved. The Death of Mrs. Westaway is a story with a mystery in its core, but it is very slow moving. For say three fourths the mystery is seemingly one ominous secret, until in the last fourth another "twist" comes along. Then another… (Not to comment on the twists, but ehh alright then) and everything moves very fast especially if you compare it to the beginning of the book. In all I kind of enjoyed it. I really love stories with a mystery house as almost a main character - Rebecca is one of my favourite books (though I haven't read it for a long time) and I appreciated the small nods to the original story by Daphne DuMaurier. If I had read this one as my first Ruth Ware I wouldn't have bothered with the others for so long. This one is clearly much much better than everything she had written before. But it did not blow me away at all. Still, I'm curious about her next novels and will maybe check them out if my mother or I find another cheap copy.

Anfänglich / Mitte des Buches zog es sich sehr in die Länge und erklärte mir einfach nur die bescheidenen Lebensumstände der Protagonistin und anschließend Familienverhältnisse/ Beziehungen zur verhassten Mutter der Familie Westaway etc. - zu viele Seite wurden ohne Geschehnisse damit gestaltet. Dadurch eher bis zur Mitte echt öde. Dennoch war ich mit einer gewissen Neugier dabei und es wurde dann wirklich unterhaltsam und spannend, obwohl sich oft eine bewusst geschaffene Verwirrung breit machte.

Eine Familie mit vielen Geheimnissen, ein altes Anwesen, eine junge Protagonistin,die auf der Suche nach der Wahrheit selbst in Grgahr gerät. Eine spannende Geschichte mit einigen Überraschungen. Ich liebe Ruth Wares Bücher, aber diesmal schien mir das Ende etwas lieblos und übereilt. Insgesamt gesehen aber wieder ein guter Thriller.

I wasn't sure what to make of this book when I first started. Ok, maybe that's not entirely true I actually thought it wouldn't be that great but it was. Hal receives a letter inviting her to a stately house to hear a reading of a will from her grandmother. Hal knows that it cant be her grandmother and is obviously a case of mistaken identity but is so down on her luck and has money lenders after her, she feels like she has no choice but to attend. Hal goes and meets the Westaway family, and ends up getting so much more than she bargained for and wonders if she will be lucky to walk away with her life. I really enjoyed this. I was surprised to see such a well-written book. I was completely taken in with the twists and turns from the story and loved the characters. Mrs Westaway sounded like a complete bitch from the story and would have loved to have seen a little more about her.

Der Anfang des Buches war etwas verwirrend, aber je länger ich gelesen habe, desto weniger konnte ich aufhören. Es ist so unfassbar spannend ein bisschen gruselig aber vor allem rechnet man mit einigen nicht. Für mich ist das wahrscheinlich das beste Buch das ich bisher gelesen habe.

Ich möchte den spannenden Thriller besonders, da die Protagonistin am Anfang der Story ihren Lebensunterhalt das Geld mit Tarotkarten und Beratung verdient. Das wurde auch einigermaßen neutral dargestellt. Dann soll geklärt werden ob sie die Erbin einer reichen Verstorbenen ist. Damit gerät sie natürlich in Gefahr. Es bleibt alles schön undurchsichtig.

Der Anfang des Buches hat mir nicht gefallen, da ich mit vielen Gedankengängen und unwichtigen Dingen überhäuft wurde. Erst ab der Beerdigung von Mrs Westaway wurde es für mich spannend. Im Allgemeinen hat es mir nicht gefallen, wie viele unnötige Dinge beschrieben wurden. Es wäre besser gewesen, wenn man sich mit manchen Dingen kürzer gehalten hätte. Die Handlung an sich hat mir aber gut gefallen. Und es war interessant mehr über die Familie zu erfahren. Ich fand das Ende nicht vorhersehbar.

Die Autorin schafft eine gute und geheimnisvolle Atmosphäre. Als Leser möchte man wissen was mit Hals Familie ist bzw. Ob es wirklich ihre Familie ist und wie zu der Verwechslung gekommen. Das Ende war etwas überraschend, dennoch konnte man als Leser schon einiges erahnen. Es hätte für einen Thriller etwas spannender sein können, jedoch hat es mir insgesamt gut gefallen.
