A very important book, which in light of Roe v. Wade is probably more timely and important than ever. I have practically read the book twice. Once as a reading in English class (thanks to my English teacher) and then again, because towards the end I only got it through class with summaries (shame on me). Atwood has (unfortunately) created a very realistic story in which women and their uteri are controlled to maintain the population of America. Women have no rights and, probably worst of all, no identity anymore. They are used and treated only as birthing machines. Very poignant book, which is also disturbing in parts. I think this book is a wake up call. Especially for the people in countries where pregnancies and abortions are heavily controlled. That it doesn't get worse than that. That we don't eventually get controlled like in Gilead. That we must continue to fight for our rights and our individualism. Unfortunately, the fight is far from over. Thank you Margaret Atwood for this book.
