This book is NOT for you if: You like slowburn romances (and dislike insta LUST, not insta love but insta lust), if you dislike fanfiction-y writing, if you dislike cringy dom type talk and if you are sensitive to rape being mentioned offhandedly for no reason but to shock (with a bonus of Stephen simping for the man he supposedly doesn't like and telling the family of one of the victims why didn't you do something BEFORE, you only do something when you are affected... unbelievable sentence that is actually in the book wtf lol). I really wanted to like this book and there are many positives, but the negatives outweigh it for me. The positives are the writing style, I think it flows quite well and gets everything properly across and when the main characters aren't busy being cringy and lusting after each other with no build-up then they are even fun and interesting characters. The premise is intriguing, the mystery is in my opinion engaging and thrilling at times. But the book keeps getting ruined and interrupted by the main pairing being unbearably horny. I'm sorry, but when I think of ye olde timey london I think of slow burn... Not Stephen barely knowing Lord Crane and instantly simping for him for no reason but... he is tall? uwu im so smol, im smol Stephen and I will forget that my family suffered because of Crane's family because I'm horny. That's it, that's literally it. There is no build up for their relationship, there is no love, it's only lust. And maybe I misunderstood something when people recommended this, but the way people talked about it made me believe this was a ROMANCE. The random blowjob on the street was the final nail in the coffin, I couldn't take it anymore (not to mention the casual misogyny lmfao). I'm very disappointed, if I want to read smut I'll read a fanfiction. I'm reading books for actual plot and build-up. Still... I did think there was potential and maybe once I forget about this mess I'll try another book from the author.

This could've been so good. I really came to like the plot, especially as more and more magic was involved. I even gasped at some display of cruelly used magic, something I didn't even do when I read my last horror novel. So, what could've been my issue? The relationship between our two MCs! I didn't feel any chemistry, like AT ALL. Suddenly they were kissing (and, at some point, fucking) and I've got no clue why they would do that. In my eyes, there was no sexual tension between them, no nothing. It was like they had to get together because this was what the author had in mind, not because it actually made sense. And the sex scenes made me cringe so hard; maybe I would've been better off if I had skipped them.And maybe I'm the problem, and I have to realize that this author just isn't for me.

Tatsächlich habe ich diesmal länger gebraucht, um in das Buch zu kommen – geht ja sonst bei K.J. Charles und mir ganz schnell :’D Ich weiß auch noch immer nicht, wie sehr ich diese Geschichte mag. (im Vergleich zu den anderen) Irgendwas hat gefehlt ... dieser eine ganz gewisse Funke. Nichtsdestotrotz hat mich „The Magpie Lord“ gut unterhalten und die Stimme von Cornell Collins war einfach wieder ein Traum! Vielleicht muss ich dem Buch nochmal eine Chance geben, wenn mein Kopf wieder ein wenig aufnahmefähiger ist, denn ich weiß auch gar nicht genau, was ich im Review jetzt hervorheben könnte. Ja, da wird es wohl nochmal eine Sitzung mit dem Hörbuch geben. ûu

Die Geschichte rund um Lucien und Stephen teilt sich in drei kurze Bücher auf. Ich fand alle drei Bände wirklich sehr unterhaltsam. Vor allem Lucien mit seiner lockeren Einstellung hatte es mir sofort angetan. Aber auch den vorsichtigeren, zurückhaltenden Stephen fand ich vom ersten Moment an toll. ♥️ Die Story an sich war spannend und doch ein wenig brutaler als erwartet, was mich aber nicht gestört hat. 🤔 Vor allem der Aufbau der damaligen Gesellschaft in Verbindung mit der magischen Gesellschaft, fand ich super beschrieben. Auch die Schwierigkeiten, mit denen Lucien, Stephen und die anderen Charaktere sich so herumschlagen müssen, wurden nicht einfach lapidar abgehandelt sonder schön geschidert. Die Nebencharaktere waren schön gezeichnet und das, obwohl die Bücher relativ kurz sind. Bei einigen Szenen und Aussagen musste ich aber auch ein wenig schmunzeln, denn KJ Charles bringt doch viel Humor in die Erzählung. 🤭 Von mir gibt's eine Leseempfehlung für alle, die Romantasy mit Humor mögen. 🤗 Übrigens: Ich musste doch ein paar Wörter in den Übersetzer tippen, weil einige ältere englische Begriffe verwendet wurden, die ich nicht kannte. 🤯 Dafür werde ich nie wieder "handkerchief" falsch übersetzen, was vorher immer eines meiner verhassten Wörter war. 😂 Irgendwie hatte ich immer einen Handbesen im Kopf, statt eines Taschentuchs. 😂😂 Eure Licey ☘️
