I, personally, would have never picked the book up, if it wasn't for my sister. She gave it to me as a gift and I have to admit, I quite enjoyed reading the book. The Story was informative in a way, gave me a few Bridgeton vibes, made me remember the Oxford I visited a couple of times and made me swoon a bit for that hot and sexy duke.I loved the headstrong female protagonist, who ist fighting for her rights, for her freedom and the chance to learn something. And the duke is really yummy <spoiler>and I truly love his character development. How he goes from: I am so not fighting for women rights in England to: I am pro women rights and I will do anything for the women I love.</spoiler>. But I have to admit, at first it wasn't easy to get into the book. The writing was a bit to get used to, but in the end, it matched the story well.

This was such a nice romance and I loved it a lot that the protagonist was a suffragist, even if I had hoped that there would be more focus on that. In the beginning it felt a lot like Annabelle being a suffragist was merely there to make her meet her love interest and would have no bigger importance on the way their love story would develop. Later it became more important which I enjoyed immensely, but still I had hoped for a little more in that respect. Still, I enjoyed myself extremely well while reading and do recommend this romance novel very much.

Es war erfrischend einen historischen Liebesroman zu lesen, bei dem die Protagonistin nicht nur als moderne Frau in einem veralteten System dargestellt wird, sondern sie auch etwas dafür tut, das System zu ändern. Das hat mir sehr gefallen, und all die Diskussionen, die daraus entstanden, habe ich sehr genossen. Man sollte keine allzu umfassende Darstellung der Sufragetten-Bewegung erwarten, aber als Kulisse war es fantastisch. Außerdem mochte ich, wie Annabelle dem Duke sehr deutlich klar macht und ihm die Augen öffnet, wie sehr ihr eine Romanze mit ihm ihr schaden würde und sie als Konsequenz daraus (erstmal) nichts mit ihm anfängt. Ich mochte nicht das ständige Hin- und Her und ich bin absolut kein Fan von "Ich habe eine Nahtoderfahrung und sehe die Dinge endlich klar" als Mittel zur Charakterentwicklung. Gibt es da nicht spannender Alternativen? Und dann noch der Heiratsantrag vom Professor: völlig unnötig! Ich hätte es viel schöner gefunden hatte Evie Dunmore bei ihm die Chance genutzt einen männlichen Charakter auf Seiten der Sufragetten zu stellen, der kein Interesse an der Protagonistin hat. Alles in allem ein unterhaltsamen Buch mit ein paar inhaltlichen Entscheidungen, die ich nicht mochte. Band zwei werde ich aber auf jeden Fall lesen. 3,5 Sterne
