In a world where supernaturals have been out for a while, Hazel is a wizard. A pretty not powerful one. But, after the death of her parents, she becomes Head of her wizard house. And because she's weak, her cousin tries to take over the house by forcing her to marry him. The wizards of her house help her flea and she ends up having to swear sercitude to Killian Drake, most powerful vampire in the Midwest, to secure her physical safety.
Believe it or not, this isn't actually really the plot of the book. Although this is the set up and I expect this to be dealt with in the next books, this is an untouched issue in this book. Which was surprising and refreshing. It also greatly served the world building because we started explaining the dynamics of wizards and then jumped into being fully immersed in the dynamics of vampire. I found it really good.
There is more to Hazel as well, as is expected in those types of books. And everything having to do with this plot point is really well done to make you really want to read the next book. I liked Killian, very dark, powerful and broody but not an asshole per se. I'm looking forward o their relationship developping.
Because yes, it would be a lit to say this book is a romance book but if you're familiar with PNR, it's a pretty usual model to have the first book be a pure set up for the romantic relationship that comes in later books. And this is a trilogy so I'm expecting romance to pick up in the next book.
Okay, loved it, I read this one in 2 sittings so right on to the next!
