I was sceptical through the first have of the book. But let me tell you: It picks up after the 200 page count. So, yes this was quite a slow burn for me because for the first 100 pages I didn’t really understand what was going on. Then it took some time for me to get into the story but after that 200 pages I couldn’t put it down! I agree with everybody though who says you should know nothing about the book before you start it because anything might spoil the twist(s). Also I really enjoyed the writing (after I got over the confusing part in the beginning :D) So, I did. think a lot about how I rate this book. Because of the struggles I had at the beginning. If I didn’t know that other people really enjoyed the second half and felt similar to me in the beginning I probably would have stopped reading after the first 100 pages. But I am so glad that I didn’t! Hence my confusion about the rating. But not often I am so captivated by a book as I was with this one in the end. So, it might be more of a 3,5 stars for me overall but I would definitely recommend reading this book if you are into dark thrillers (would really categorise this as horror)!

Stephen King probably would have loved to call this novel his own, because it’s that brilliant. We are early in 2021, but this could be one of my favourite books this year. „The Last House on Needles Street“ is an utterly sinister, memorable and haunting read, you won’t be able to forget, for sure. I loved everything, the writing is impeccable and kept flowing from the beginning until the end. The plot is highly-intricate and once you think you worked everything out and the puzzle is solved - a non expected twist comes ahead and your puzzle pieces start to shatter. I‘m glad I found a new author of whom I will look forward to read everything from the past and the current. Thank you NetGalley / Serpent‘s Tail for providing me with this e-arc in return for an honest review.

LESEN!!! Größte Empfehlung von mir!

A story that seems very familiar. There is a missing girl, a weird man in a boarded up house who regularly looses hours if not days he can’t remember, and the sister of the missing girl still on the search years later. But then there’s also a talking cat and this is where things got a bit more interesting. The story is small in scope, taking place only with a handful of characters and locations, which makes it very easy too read and it flows great. The atmosphere throughout is very tense and the slow dripping of new information keeps the mystery interesting. That is until at a certain point the “unreliable narrator” trope is getting a bit too much and it became pretty clear where the story will be going. There was a lot of drag in the third act and some chapters blended together because the characters kept repeating the same stuff again and again. In the end it was enjoyable enough because it took some turns away from the usual tropes.
