How to Stay Sane in an Age of Division is a compact, pocket-book about how our world feels increasingly fractured — and what mindset might help us not just cope, but think and live more wisely. Elif Shafak reminds us that being sane in a divided time isn’t about tuned-out calm, but curious engagement.

Elif Shafak doesn’t preach or promise magical life hacks; instead, she guides the reader through our social and political landscape with genuine curiosity and a generous spirit. One of the most striking ideas in the book is how stories connect us. Shafak writes, “The moment we stop listening to diverse opinions is also when we stop learning.” This reflects a core theme of her book: that wisdom does not come from the echo chambers of social media, but from a diversity of voices and experiences. Another powerful observation is, “We live in an age in which there is too much information, less knowledge and even less wisdom.” Here, Shafak challenges readers to move beyond simply scrolling through headlines and instead read, reflect, and understand rather than react. This idea feels especially relevant today, as it is easy to become overwhelmed by the constant flow of information. What is far more difficult is slowing down and truly empathizing with people who are different from us. Overall, the book encourages readers to rethink ideas of identity and belonging, and to reflect on how emotions can empower us without becoming all-consuming — particularly in an age marked by division.

2.5 - this would have been so much better if I hadn't already listened to the interviews with Elif Shafak available for free on Spotify. The content is pretty much exactly the same, often even verbatim. The thoughts are worth listening to (or reading about), but I could have just saved the money I spent on the hard copy.
