October Faction tells the story of the October family, a couple of supernatural hunters who raised two children who now want to follow in their parents' footsteps. The first volume is mostly an introduction to this family and their past, how they got to where they are now. We meet Frederick Allan, his wife Deloris and their two children, Vivian and Geoff. Fred and Deloris are retired supernatural hunters who live partly in hiding to evade the enemies they made during their hunting days. Their children have no interest in college and just want to work the same job as their parents. They get up to some shenanigans and things progress from there while we meet some of Fred and Deloris's old friends and enemies along the way. The story sadly didn't draw me in all that much. I would've wished for either deeper exploration of Fred's past or more dramatic moments in the present that helped to further the plot which mostly seemed to be meandering along. Something I really liked was that both Deloris and Vivian are strong and complex, capable women who don't play second fiddle to the men in their family. I didn't find Fred or Geoff to be very compelling but perhaps they get more interesting in later issues. The art put me off a bit at first and I'm still not really a fan of it but it fits the eerie mood of the book very well. There's some panels that are drawn beautifully, that are striking. Something I loved about the art was the colouring; it really enhanced the atmosphere in the different scenes and allowed for focus points in panels less saturated with colour. I might read more volumes of this series but at this point I'm not fully on board just yet.
