2.5 do 3*
More detailed German Review ARC provided by NetGalley. The first SciFi novel by Michael J. Sullivan was a bit disappointing and not up to par with his fantasy works. The main character Ellis Rogers just didn't work for me, I wasn't invested in his back story and unwilling to cheer for him. A big factor that made him so dislikable for me was , that even though he is a scientist he still has this strange belief in God. That can work, but in this case his views were just weakly argued. He seemed to me in some aspects more like an close minded republican from the south, just someone I have no sympathy for and can't relate to. The main story suffered the same problems I recognized in a lot of other SciFi books. Really great world building and intriguing ideas, without a thrilling story to tell. It felt to me more like exploring this world and it's concepts with the character, while the main plot played out rather insignificant in the background. Just too simple and predictable at times for my taste. The strong point of this book really is the world building. I think it gives a lot of great inspiring thoughts of what a future could look like, based on current problems and their consequences. How a very different future society could look like. Definitely interesting to discuss these possibilities. There was just one aspect, even though it was only mentioned two times as a sideline, that kind of ruined the world for me. But it would spoil too much if I described it here, so just read this if you finished the book : The fact that the Port-a-Call device has no range limitation. It was possible to visit another planet in another galaxy! Exploration is one of the biggest desires of humans, even genetically modified ones, that I think this just doesn't work in this world. The questions that pop to mind are why is there no desire to explore the whole universe when distance seems to be no problem? They didn't find any other live forms? etc. This transportation device in this state is just too mighty in my opinion . Respect to Michael J. Sullivan for trying something new, outside his comfort zone, but I enjoyed his fantasy books more. Even more respect for the way he is going to handle the printed/ebooks sale. If you buy the printed the book you get the ebook for free. That's the right way to go! I hope it works and other publishers follow soon!
Eine tolle Zeitreise Geschichte a la Time Machine.
