Das Buch überzeugte dich zunächst durch seinen vielversprechenden Titel und Klappentext: eine queere Protagonistin, die sich gegen Unterdrückung stellt – ein wichtiges und spannendes Thema. Beim Lesen konntest du jedoch nur schwer eine Verbindung zur Hauptfigur Sophia aufbauen. Zwar bewunderst du ihren Mut und ihren Einsatz für ihre Rechte, doch ihr Verhalten – besonders gegenüber ihrem Love Interest Erin – wirkte oft unfair und wenig reflektiert. Auch der „not like other girls“-Vibe hat dich gestört. Die Charaktere insgesamt erschienen dir zu eindimensional: Figuren waren meist klar in gut oder böse eingeteilt, ohne große Tiefe oder Entwicklung. Besonders männliche Figuren wurden überwiegend negativ dargestellt, mit wenigen Ausnahmen. Auch Erin blieb als Charakter eher blass und diente mehr dazu, andere Figuren hervorzuheben. Handlungstechnisch kritisierst du vorhersehbare Wendungen und eine recht einfache, geradlinige Story ohne viele Nebenhandlungen. Einige Aspekte hätten deiner Meinung nach mehr Tiefe und Ausarbeitung verdient, stattdessen wurden oft naheliegende Lösungen gewählt. Trotz dieser Kritikpunkte hat dir das Buch beim Lesen Spaß gemacht, vor allem wegen der wichtigen Themen, die es anspricht. Insgesamt würdest du es jedoch nicht unbedingt weiterempfehlen, da es deiner Meinung nach deutlich bessere Bücher mit ähnlicher Thematik gibt.

Die Idee des Buches ist erstmal mega spannend: Cinderella starb vor 200 Jahren und ist seitdem zu einem Vorzeigemodell dafür geworden, wie sich Frauen zu benehmen haben. Ihr einziges Lebensziel ist es, ab einem bestimmten Lebensjahr zu dem jährlich vom König höchstpersönlich veranstalteten Ball zu erscheinen, wo sie ihre große Liebe treffen sollen. Familien schmeißen sich dafür in Unkosten und opfern ihre letztes Hemd, damit ihre Töchter auf jeden Fall ausgewählt werden. Und wer sich das nicht leisten kann, nun... Da war doch was mit einer guten Fee, oder nicht? Klingt im ersten Moment doch ganz romantisch, oder? Nicht wirklich, denn am Ende dient das alles nur dazu, Frauen klein zu halten. Die junge Sophia will sich diesem System nicht länger bäugen. Für sie steht der Ball an und sie will auf keinen Fall ein Teil dieses patriarchischen Systems sein. Außerdem hat sie sich in ihre beste Freundin verliebt, aber in dieser Welt hat so eine Liebe keine Hoffnung. Aufgeben will sie deshalb aber trotzdem nicht, also beschließt sie, dass dem König endlich Einhalt geboten werden muss. Dabei offenbaren sich ihr einige unerwartete Wahrheiten. Die Grundidee des Buches ist großartig und der Twist am Ende war absolut überraschend und gelungen. Für mich war es das erste Buch mit diesem Trope und es konnte überzeugen, weil es an vielen Stellen leider zu wahr klang. Sophia als Prota funktioniert, weil sie in ihrer rebellischen und aufrührerischen Art konsequent bleibt. Was mich etwas gestört hat, waren, dass viele Dinge nicht bis ins Detail ausgearbeitet waren und dadurch zu überraschend kamen und dann eben einfach da waren. Das ist mindestens an drei Stellen passiert und war dann doch etwas zu viel. Und wie sich die Dynamik auf halbem Weg verschoben hat, hat bei mir einen etwas faden Beigeschmack hinterlassen, weil es nicht ausreichend geklärt wurde. Und bis zum letzten Drittel war ich mir nicht ganz sicher, in welchem Genre sich das Buch bewegt. Die Message dahinter ist trotzdem gut und wichtig, dafür allein lohnt es sich, das Buch zu lesen.

I really loved that book! The plot came quite late, but surprised me in a good way. I could empathise a lot with the mc, and could relate a lot with them. Though I enjoyed reading the book, I would have loved it even more if the realm telling was more detailed. I loved the authors writing style and I look forward to reading other books written by her! This book has a special place in my heart. ✨

Ok so I guess this just wasn’t for me. I usually don’t like YA that much and this book particularly felt pretty young, like aimed for 13-15 year olds. Which, for me, is just not it. The characters felt kinda flat and the romance between Constance and Sophia felt rushed. I also didn’t like the ending as it also felt rushed (or not developed enough (?)) so ya, I am disappointed because I got into this book with pretty high expectations but it’s also my fault for not realizing that it would be targeted (i don’t even know) to a younger audience. Anyway I do think I would recommend this to people within the age range and people who like the classic princess stories but not to someone who is expecting a lot of “action scenes” like I was.

Richtig cooles und unterhaltsames Buch. Mir hat dieses Buch echt gut gefallen. Es war eine kurze abgerundete Geschichte die in sich schlüssig und auch sehr cool war. Ich hatte am Anfang echt meine Zweifel ob so ein „kurzes“ Buch überhaupt eine Geschichte hervorbringen kann, die nicht super hektisch geschrieben wirkt oder voller Lücken ist. Doch mir wurde das Gegenteil bewiesen. Die Geschichte war in Ruhe erzählt und nichts wichtiges wurde weggelassen. Auch das Ende hat mich echt zufrieden gestellt. Man konnte eigentlich erwarten das das Ende gut sein würde und das Ziel der Hauptfigur erreicht werden würde doch das hat das es keinesfalls schlechter gemacht. Die Figuren mochte ich ebenfalls sehr und man konnte sich sehr gut in sie hineinversetzen. Auch den Bösewicht fand ich sehr gelungen. Man konnte ihn nur hassen und ekelhaft finden. Was mich an diesem Buch besonders gefreut hat waren die klaren Messages der Geschichte. Statt diese subtil in die Geschichte einzubringen wurden sie klar angesprochen und es wurde sich lange mit ihnen beschäftigt. Nicht nur ging es um das Thema LGBTQ und die Rechte von Frauen, auch ging es um Themen wie Gesunde Beziehungen, das einstehen für sich und andere und noch viele mehr. Dies hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Alles in allem also eine schöne, kurze, sehr gute Geschichte mit wichtigen Themen.

„I'd pitch this as Black Cinderella falls in love with Merida and together they destroy the patriarchy.“ das fasst es ganz gut zusammen. das buch war ganz okay aber nichts besonderes, wobei mir die diversity gut gefallen hat. mochte constance sehr, sophia aber nicht so gerne gerade zu beginn. hätte gerne mehr von liv und besonders von luke erfahren und dafür weniger von erin weil sie einfach eine ziege und ein looser ist. obwohl ich den fairytale aspekt mit cinderella eigentlich mega cool finde hat mich die story nicht wirklich gecatched. ich habe mit viel mehr fantasy aspekten und magie gerechnet weshalb ich was das angeht sehr enttäuscht war, da das sehr im hintergrund stand und nur selten erwähnt wurde. fand die storyline war oft sehr gerushed und nicht klar und ausführlich genug erklärt was mir schwierigkeiten bereitet hat mit der story oder den charactern zu connecten und mit zu fiebern. hätte mir auch mehr romance aspekte gewünscht oder noch mehr besondere momente zwischen den beiden, aber da der fokus auf der main story liegen soll fand ich es so auch in ordnung. finde das cover echt schön, obwohl ich menschen auf dem cover eigentlich nicht mag. würde es ehr nicht empfehlen, einfach weil die storyline für mich nicht heraussticht, obwohl ich die idee von grund auf eigentlich cool finde. zusammenfassend konnte man das buch gut und einfach lesen, die diversity aspekte sind aufjedenfall positiv aber das war es auch.

Wow, i wasn’t expected this ending. Some kind of but not this way… Strong and powerful maincharacter. It was something new for me to read a whole story with LGBTQ+ characters and I loved it…I recommend this book to everyone. The writers style is good and easy to read. I enjoyed it ☺️

fängt gut an und lässt nach.. sehr sehr nach. Gefühle und Handlungen einiger Charakter sind nicht nachvollziehbar. es ist ein ewiges hin und her in dem nichts passiert das wirklich zur Story beiträgt und man daher sehr schnell Kapitel überspringen kann. Die Plot Twists manchmal mal sehr weit her geholt und einfach nicht gut.. Die Charaktere sind nie wirklich tiefgründig sondern nur da um da zu sein. (dazu kommt das die Beschreibung der Kleidung manchmal etwas verwirrend ist.)

3.5☆ ー I must say, given that I really didn't like this book at the start and how I couldn't take it seriously at first, it grew on me quite a bit over time. The ending, while feeling quite rushed at times, was very satisfying, even though certain passages and quotes seemed unnatural. I think I just love seeing empowered women beating up sexist men. Not my favourite book, definitely not my favourite writing style, but it ended up not being half bad. Glad I didn't dnf.

I LOVED IT! at the beginning it was very confusing about everything but I understood it. It engages feminism, homophobia the main character is such a badass!! I had fun reading it, even though it took me a while (I was also sick and didn’t read for 2 days at all😭). The cover is INSANELY beautiful, and just generally the idea behind this book is so original and I’m just amazed by it. I loved the happy ending cause it also could have gone VERYY differently. It made me so happy when Prince Charming was killed but it was such a shock with Amina💀

Ich habe von Kalynn Bayron zuvor die Poisend Heart Diologie gelesen welche mir wahnsinnig gut gefallen hat. Dieses Buch fand ich von der Story her auch wieder mega gut. Wieder eine starke Protagonistin sowie tolle Nebenfiguren. Für mich hat sich das Buch etwas schleppend gelesen und ich habe viele Pausen zwischendurch gemacht. Woran das genau lag kann ich gar nicht genau sagen. Das Ende hat mich leider mit zu vielen Fragen stehen gelassen. Ich hätte gerne noch ein Kapitel mit 20 Jahre später oder so ähnlich gelesen. So wirkt es offen als gäbe es einen zweiten Teil den es meines Wissens nach aber nicht gibt. Alles in allem aber absolut lesenswert.

Stumbled about that book when I was looking for some new stuff to read and Kalynn Bayron's name popped up. And as I am a big fan of the Grimm Fairy Tales, my curiosity was picked enough to want to see what Cinderella is dead was all about. And I have to admit that it has been quite some time that a book has made me feel so many things like this one has. A hundred pages in and I was so angry that I had to pause it, for two reasons. One, the very feministic stance the author takes in which basically all men are toxic, or weaklings, or both. Two, and much more importantly, the author made me feel the helplessness and anger of the protagonist towards the society she had to endure in a way books rarely achieve with me. The first one probably reflecting more on my male gut reactions, the second one surely reflecting on the skill of the author, because the last time a book made me this angry was a novel by Thomas Bernhard some 30 years ago. Needless to say that when Sophia (a wonderful choice of name for the protagonist) fled from her destiny and started to take action to make things right I was fully on board. I thoroughly enjoyed the second half of the book and the surprises waiting for Sophia and me on the way. And I really loved how Kalynn Bayron subverted the themes and the characters of the original Cinderella story and made them her own. Admittedly, the book has some flaws. The plot feels sometimes rushed, and no matter which clothes Sophia wears, she is enveloped in lots of plot armor all the time (though that also goes for a lot of the male characters in Grimm's Fairy Tales). Also there's not much world-building, though there are hints that this world is not only the setting of the Cinderella story, but also of other (maybe all?) fairy tales we know from our books. I'd also have to agree with another reviewer that that there could have been a bit more consistency regarding the nomenclature, even when I found that easy enough to ignore. And man, was I glad that at least two male characters in the books showed some decency (Luke and Liv's father). Because e But still, the end of the book made me feel again, this time an incredible amount of relief and satisfaction. As grim as the story was at some points, it felt tremendously good to have the good side win and not immediately succumb to the same atrocities, the bad boys showed the whole time. Yeah, I love happy endings, and this felt like one. So,for my first contact with Kalynn Bayron'S writings, I found that this book was very well done, if sometimes challenging to continue and I certainly won't shy away from reading other works she's created.

Leider ist der Funke bei mir nicht übergesprungen... Dabei fand ich das Setting mega gut. Eine dystopische Welt, in der das Märchen von Aschenputtel praktisch das Gesetz und Religion gleichzeitig ist. Aber irgendwie habe ich mit dem Schreibstil und der Erzählweise gehadert. Es fehlte einfach das gewisse Etwas und ich wollte das Buch lieben, konnte aber einfach nicht. Schade.

Honestly this book hits different for me. I had really no time for reading the last weeks but starting with this was worth the wait. Honestly I don’t often give 5 stars but in my opinion this deserves it: WlW+Fantasy+Daggers= Perfect for me. Go read it it is really worth the hype!!!!

Where do I start with this? Wow this book took me so long. We get really thrown into the story. We know from the start where the problem is. But do you think anyone is doing something about it?! It takes to Chapter 30 to finally do something about it! Nothing was happening the whole book. They were just like "We need to make a plan" "We need to do this and that" BUT NO ONE ACTUALLY DOES SOMETHING! It has some nice quotes when it comes to feminism. But nothing more. I also basically like none of the characters (besides Livs parents). Yeah this book just wasn't for me.

"But it was a lie. Like the Cinderella story. Like the ball. Like everything. wow. i loved this book so much. it could've been better because the ending was kind of abrupt and it could have been longer but i loved the plot and the romance. Sophia was stubborn and rushed things but let's be honest i still love her AND constance omggg !! it was such a good written book and i enjoyed reading it (also fast read!) and i'm a sucker for the short chapters :) oh and it would have been nice to read more about what happened to Mersailles :((

Characters: 0.5 Plot & Worldbuilding: 0.5 Writing: 1 Read again: / Overall feeling: / Fast paced and without logic at some points. The plot and worldbuilding could have been so much better. The protagonist was silly, short-sighted and exhausting to read. I liked the last plottwist at the end. A story with lots of missed potential.

The story is set in an intensified version of today’s patriarchal society where women have no rights and even have to attend a ball to parade themselves in their finest attire, hoping to be made a man’s possession - the only acceptable goal in life. What sounds enraging to the reader, is perceived just as bad by main character Sophia. She flees from the ball, chased by the king’s men and is ready to give up everything to bring him down. Cinderella is dead is by no means just a fantasy story. It is filled with situations the female readers or those who associate with womanhood have witnessed or experienced many times. A woman being beaten up by her husband while nobody steps in, not leaving the violent husband in fear of dishonour, a woman smiled “all mouth, no eyes” while men make degrading jokes. But to avoid being a heavy read the book provides us with not just female rage and rebellion but also a queer love story, that, in it’s flirtatiousness, made me giggle embarrassingly often and more importantly showed that queer love might just not be doomed in the end. All that almost makes me disregard Sophia’s mind baffling misunderstanding of how difficult it can be to stand up against oppression as she urges those close to her to support her dangerous plans, even if that means death. And then there’s all those daggers… At some point it felt like rereading the same pages all over again as they lacked creativity in ways to fight. The people’s oblivious beliefs in the doctrine might be explained by how oblivious people in real life can be as well, but in the book it leaves us of course with our main character who is different and could see it all from the beginning, so in that sense it’s as stereotypical as it can get. Still, the aspects I listed in the first part made me enjoy the read and devour the 400 pages in just two days, so I can only recommend reading this.

It’s easy to follow and an easy to understand writing style. I was a little disappointed bc I had high hopes for the romance but it felt kind of childish, maybe because it’s a ya book?! I just wanted a little more tension or a higher focus on the love process, it’s just was there without any building up..

The book is really good. It presents the famous Cinderella story, but in another version (a better one). The characters are very relatable and have deep personalities. The plot twist is amazing and is placed very well. It never gets boring. Also, the writing is very understandable, even for non-native English speakers like me. To sum up the book: it is a queer romance fantasy story with a good villain.

The writing was really good. I haven't had a book that hooked me this quickly since Six of Crows. The worldbuilding was nice and I didn't need a map to know where everything was. That seems so rare for YA nowadays. The characters are all likeable and their behavior is understandable. Also Sophia and Constance are precious. ♡ What prevents me from rating this five stars: Luke: Luke is gay, funny and ready to marry Sophia for her own safety. He's a great character. And completely unnecessary. In the end, the plan they have doesn't come to fruition and he isn't seen until the end where he is just a starved man fleeing the cells. His sole purpose was to give Sophia another gay person to bond with and to check the box of "Talking about 'not all men' and why it's wrong" Kalynn Bayron seemed to find important. Which leads me to the next point. The politics: I'm a bisexual, mentally ill woman. I'm a feminist. It wouldn't make sense for me not to be. But, like Luke, other parts of the story seemed to me like they were only there because Kalynn Bayron had written a list of all the feminist messages she could think of and wanted to include them without really knowing how. It's great to have Sophia be rebellious and feminist but she's spent her entire life in an oppressive system that forces you to read propaganda every. single. day. Her unlearning all of the propaganda was way too quickly and without any real effort. Sure, she was shocked about the true story of Cinderella but it's not like she really believed in it in the first place. That's not how living in an oppressive system works! It takes years to unlearn everything you've been taught and even then, a lot of it still sticks with you in the form of internal voices. I know it's YA fantasy but if you include real life politics in it, I would prefer at least some form of realism when it comes to unlearning internalized bigotry. Though I will say, I know Kalynn Bayron is a woc and if I read it correctly also a wlw? So I understand her writing with a bit of wish fulfillment. The characters: What I know of Sophia: She's black, she's a lesbian and she's rebellious. She likes dresses but also pants. What I know of Constance: She's white, she's a lesbian and she's the descendant of Cinderella's stepsister. She wants revenge and she likes pants. I didn't really get Sophia's and Erin's relationship because I didn't know anything about them and I hoped that throughout the book, I would learn at least enough about Sophia as a person to understand it better. But I didn't, not really, so when their fight came towards the end, I felt nothing. It was forced and I didn't think it was necessary. I just didn't understand why they were apparently so in love and why Sophia NEEDED to see Erin. I was never given a reason to care about her as a person. I said it throughout my reading process that I feel like Bayron read on tumblr that every scene in her book needed to drive the plot forward but didn't realize that progressing the characters also drives the plot forward and I still stand by that. There were never really any quiet moments that showed me how Sophia or Constance were as people. We have a scene in the beginning where Sophia walks around alone and introduces us to the town. We get her thoughts about everything and that's nice but in the end it's more a setup so we would care about Liv's death and so we could hear how Sophia doesn't believe in the fairy godmother. Later we have a scene with Sophia and Constance alone but it is comparatively short and still didn't tell me much about them as people. We already know how they grew up, we already know Sophia feels guilty but understands Erin and we already know that they're in love. And then Amina comes again and the plot is moved forward once again. All in all, I love this book. It's the first one in a long time that I happily read in one day. I adore deconstructing fairy tales and I would love to have a series about it. Cinder and Ever After High exist, sure, but they're not the same and I would be delighted to have Bayron's take on Rapunzel or Snow White. Especially Rapunzel.

Holy moly… Cinderella is Dead was not what I expected when I bought it but it was surprisingly good. Fantastic even. As I said already, it was no easy book. The author showed flaws in our society and hind them behind a retelling of one of the most popular fairytales. The end was mind-blowing and a plot twist I didn't expect! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in this kind of books

Ich habe Cinderella is Dead over all sehr genossen. Der Schreibstil liest sich einfach weg und Sophia muss man meiner Meinung nach einfach gern haben. Die Queerness lässt mich schmelzen, hach! Die Idee, die im Endeffekt dahinter steckt, fand ich kreativ und spannend. Sie ist sehr metaphorisch und ich muss sagen - das war mir teilweise ein wenig zu sehr mit dem Vorschlaghammer. Der Bösewicht ist sehr flach und auch seine Komplizin hätte meiner Meinung nach ein bisschen mehr Tiefe verdient gehabt. Ein wenig mehr Tragik und Backstory. Das Ende war dann auch recht abrupt abgefertigt. Wahrscheinlich alles Dinge, die im Retellung gängig sind, aber für meinen Geschmack hat es dann nicht ganz für Sterne gereicht.

Sie ist verliebt in ihre beste Freundin Erin, die sich aber auf den Ball freut. Sophia weiß, dass bei dem Ball etwas nicht mit rechten Dingen zugeht und verschwindet kurzerhand von dort. Während die Wachen hinter ihr her sind, trifft sie auf Constance, eine Nachfahrin Cinderellas Stiefschwester Gabrielle. Beide machen sie sich auf die Suche nach der "guten Fee", um herauszufinden was Cinderella vor all den Jahren widerfahren ist und um den König zu stoppen. Charaktere: Sophia war meiner Meinung nach ein etwas schwieriger Charakter. Sie hat einen starken Ungerechtigkeitssinn und ich konnte auch verstehen, warum sie unbedingt weg will, aber dadurch, dass sie das ständig gesagt hat, hat sie alle anderen in ihrem Umfeld in Gefahr gebracht und sie konnte Erin schließlich auch nicht zwingen mitzukommen. Zugleich fand ich es auch schwierig, dass sie ihren Eltern vorgeworfen hat, dass sie lieber wollen, dass sie unglücklich ist. Ohne zu diesem Zeitpunkt zu wissen, worum es eigentlich geht, war mir klar, dass ihre Eltern sie nur beschützen wollten und nicht wollten, dass sie stirbt, wenn jemand sie bei der Flucht erwischt. Sophia hat da einfach nicht das große Ganze betrachtet und in der Hinsicht ging es immer nur darum was sie wollte. Beeindruckend fand ich ihr Selbstbewusstsein, aber auch hier war mir klar, dass sie das noch in Schwierigkeiten bringen würde. Und letztendlich ist sie auch so unglaublich stur und naiv. Sie weiß, dass sie während sie auf der Flucht ist auf keinen Fall nach Hause gehen darf und was tut sie? Sie geht nach Hause! Also da hätte ich am Liebsten schreien wollen. Sophia hat jedoch, und das muss man ihr zu Gute halten, im Laufe der Geschichte eine gute Wandlung durchgemacht, wodurch sie am Ende dann auch weniger anstrengend war. Constance mochte ich echt gerne. Sie ist nett und definitiv angstfrei, was ich an ihr liebe. Außerdem hat sie sehr oft, in sehr vielen Situationen recht gehabt, zum Beispiel als sie Sophia gefragt hat, was Erin je für sie getan hat. Erin fand ich nervig. Sie will nicht mit Sophia weg, okay, aber das gibt ihr nicht das Recht, sich so gegenüber ihr zu verhalten. Sophia wollte ihr immer nur helfen, aber Erin hat das Ganze nicht mit einem winzigen bisschen Dank gewürdigt. Amina fand ich schon von Anfang an etwas seltsam. Dann wurde sie mir etwas sympathisch, weil sie eingesehen hat, dass sie in der Vergangenheit ein paar Fehler gemacht hat. Aber dann hat sie all ihre Sympathie wieder zunichte gemacht. Vom König bin ich natürlich auch absolut kein Fan. Spannung: Direkt am Anfang habe ich mich gefragt, was das für eine komische Welt ist, die so dezent Cinderella besessen ist. Doch ich muss sagen, dass ich die Geschichte echt spannend fand. Am Anfang fand ich es etwas schwer durchzublicken und alles war dadurch dann so mysteriös, aber als dann alles nach und nach aufgedeckt wurde, war ich einfach nur schockiert und beeindruckt von der Idee der Geschichte. Am Ende ging es jedoch meiner Meinung nach, alles zu schnell, was dort so ein bisschen die Spannung weggenommen hat. Schreibstil: Ich habe das Buch in Englisch gelesen und fand, dass die Sprache nicht unbedingt schwer zu verstehen war. Mir hat der Schreibstil generell ganz gut gefallen, auch wenn ich es zu Anfang etwas schwierig fand reinzukommen, da doch eher in einem der Zeit angemessenen Sprachstil geschrieben wurde. Cover: Das Cover finde ich eigentlich ganz schön. Es passt wirklich gut zu einer Fantasy Story und macht neugierig auf die Geschichte. Fazit: Ich gebe dem Buch 3/5 Sterne. Mir hat die Idee der Geschichte wirklich gut gefallen, aber leider konnte mich das Ende nicht so ganz überzeugen. Es ging einfach zu schnell und irgendwas fehlte mir da. Den Großteil der Zeit hatte ich auch so meine Probleme mit Sophia, wobei sie sich doch zum Ende hin gewandelt hat. Dennoch kann ich das Buch empfehlen.

Ich wollte dieses Buch unbedingt mögen, weil es einfach mehr Abenteuer für queere BIPoC als Hauptcharaktere und Identifikationsfiguren braucht. Allerdings war dieses Buch für mich ein wenig zu jung - ich lese viel und gerne YA, aber das hier würde ich noch mal jünger einordnen. Vieles wurde sehr schnell und oberflächlich abgekanzelt, was die Charaktere und auch das Worldbuilding angeht. Was mich permanent gestört hat und den Lesefluss sehr getrübt hat: das gesamte Königreich tut nichts. NICHTS. Sophia muss gegen das Patriachat und den bösen König fast im Alleingang antreten und egal mit wem sie da so spricht, die Menschen reagieren eigentlich nur auf sie, fast niemand tut was von alleine. Und die, die mal eigenständig gehandelt haben, scheitern und sind dann auf Sophia angewiesen, die sie rettet oder ihnen zeigt, dass alles noch einen Sinn macht oder endlich den entscheidenden Plan mitbringt, obwohl dieses Buch nicht unbedingt mit den ausgefeiltesten Plänen aufwartet. Die Backstory ist schnell erzählt: ein Königreich 200 Jahre nach Cinderellas Tod, in dem alle jungen Mädchen an Cinderella gemessen werden und mit 16 zu ihrem großen Ball eingeladen werden um ihr Happily Ever After zu finden. Nur Sophia möchte nicht von einem der Männer erwählt werden, weil sie mit Erin zusammen ist. Das klingt als Prämisse unglaublich spannend und ich finde die Idee immer noch sehr gut. Leider war es für mich nicht genug. Sei es nun wie schnell Sophia ihren Love Interest in der Story findet (ja, eine Frau, aber nein, nicht Erin), oder die erwähnte Passivität der anderen Charaktere oder dass das Worldbuilding außerhalb des Königreichs sehr vage ist und ich nicht glauben kann, wie diese Gesellschaft dann eigentlich funktioniert. Es gibt einfach niemanden außer Sophia, der für sich selbst denkt. Das reicht für mich einfach nicht für eine bessere Sternebewertung.
