Addie and her sister Deb are about to go on a road trip to a friend's wedding in the north of Scotland. But, not long after setting off, a car slams into the back of theirs. The driver is none other than Addie's ex, Dylan, who she haven’t seen since their break-up two years ago. Dylan and his best mate Marcus are heading to the wedding too, their car is a total loss after the accident, so Addie offers them a ride in her Mini. Packed to the roofter with luggage and secrets, and with three hundred miles ahead of them, they started a trip not only to their common friend’s wedding but also to the very messy history of their relationship.
I loved the other two books (The Flatshare, The Switch) I read by Beth O'Leary, so I had high hopes for this one. I’m really disappointed by ‘The Road Trip’ but I did finish the book in hope it’ll get better. There were some funny parts but I missed the banter I enjoyed in ‘The Flatshare’ therefore I was most of the time bored reading it. I couldn’t warm up with any of the characters (mostly with Deb) and I think Rodney wasn’t needed at all to be in the story. I disliked most the side story with Étienne, I know it was important for the process but was the nearly rape needed??? I think it would have been enough if Marcus witnessed a kiss between Addie and Étienne. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book when Addie and Dylan met in France. Even I don’t enjoy ‘The Road Trip’ that much I’m gonna read Beth O’Learys other books because she’s a great author to read for in between times.
