I can’t really think of something to say. The book is good but... There will be a third book and I guess I have to wait till then to make a real statement. In the first book there is love with little drama, in this book it’s the other way around. Personally, that is something I am really disappointed about... If I could go back, I would wait till the third book is out and read both then.

So tragic but so amazing.

I was a little critical before I started this second book. Because I was kind of scared that it would be "too much" of the story. I thought "Carry On" had given me everything I needed from Simon and Baz, but along came "Wayward Son" that dives deeper, darker, and hits on all those what comes after questions that so often get left behind in fantasy. This book follows Simon, Baz, and Penny as they head on a magical road trip across the US which might sound lighthearted but gets surprisingly introspective and full of twists. "Wayward Son" explores the aftermath of a big “final battle.” Simon has lost his sense of purpose, Baz is struggling to reach him, and Penny’s enthusiasm isn’t quite enough to keep everyone going. The mental health undertones are so raw and real. Plus, the characters’ dynamics feel so well-rounded and honest. It’s as much a story of friendship as it is of love and loss. "Wayward Son" reminds us that healing is a journey, not a destination. If you’re in the mood for an adventure that’s as emotionally charged as it is magical, this one’s for you. _____________ Spoiler _____________ I really was devastated by the fact how Baz and Simon treated each other at the beginning of the book. When I finished the first books I was looking forward to see more „couple action“ in the second one, but I was kind of disappointed. But with the story moving on their relationship got closer and lovelier again. And I hope that will continue in the third book. I was/am really confused by the character named Shepard because I still can’t really make out his motive or motivations. That will probably be seen in the third part… Penny is still the smart-loving friend she’s been in the first book. I hope to see more of and Agatha in the third book to get more insights of them. All over I really liked this part too except the fact that it was a little boring and slow-pacing at the beginning.

"Wayward Son" picks up about a year after "Carry On". Simon, Penny, and Baz have saved the world, but Simon is not coping well with what he had to sacrifice. Penny proposed to take a road trip through America to get Simon out of her funk and see her American boyfriend and their friend from school, which they haven't seen in a while. It doesn't all go as planned, as the magical landscape in the US is different than back home in the UK, and the trio get themselves into problems with vampires and other magical beings, and also pick up up some new friends along the way. Also, Baz learns more about being a vampire. This book is a little less lighthearted than "Carry On" was, because they're all dealing with the fallout from what happened then, and also with being adults, especially Simon, whose loss of power threw him into depression. It's still the same action and emotion-filled book, though. I really enjoyed the way the relationships between the trio evolved, and how they fit in with each other. I thought Agatha would be unimportant, as she turned her back on the magickal world, but I'm glad she got her moments and her arc as well. Her development, as well as Baz' vampire discovery, must be the two favorite parts of mine from this book. I also enjoyed the new additions we had in this book, especially what these new additions meant for Baz, and I hope we see more of Shephard in the third book. All in all, I liked this book just as well as "Carry On", but one should be aware that it's a bit darker and more serious than its predecessor.

The second book has a way better plot than the first book. Even though when the first book was more character-driven. I kinda missed the Simon-Baz-interaction in this one because mostly it was just pure pain. I miss the my babies... After my "trouble" with the first book I am still not satisfied about the whole sexuality stuff. Sadly it is handled poorly. I am still not a fan of Agatha, urgh. But I am here for the Simon-Baz-Penny dynamic. That's such a chaotic trio, love it. I hope Simon and Baz will figure it all out in the last book because daaaamn my boys are just idiots in love with zero braincells.

A solid sequel but I really missed the cast of characters we got to meet in book 1, Baz's aunt in particular. Hopefully we'll get to see loads more of her in the third book. I liked following Simon's journey trying to come to terms with who he is now (no longer the Chosen One) and Baz supporting him all the way was just heart-warming. Also, really enjoyed the pining between these two - even when they're together they'ld rather fight monsters than talk about their feelings. Penelope's flaws were center stage in this installment as well which I enjoyed immensely and the new side-kick the team acquires is a really nice addition.

Guter 2.

Road trip through America

So I obviously can't say as much as for the first book because of spoiler, but this book follows the question "What happens after the hero fulfilled their destiny?" and that's pretty interesting. In most stories, it just ends there with a happy ever after, not in this one. The 2nd volume takes place after they finished school and go on a road trip to America with new adventures on the road. Also, I enjoyed this one very much, but I still like the first one more. Maybe because the atmosphere here was a bit more sad? There were some more serious topics and less joking around, I guess, but it had to be like that. This part of the trilogy might feel like it has no big impact on the actual story, but it's important for character development (especially Baz), and well, it also introduces a new main character. (this was my first review after I read it, and I want to add that it was way better when I reread it cause I could concentrate more on everything that was happening without worrying about their relationship xD Also there were more cute/fun moments than I remembered. So I recommend reading it again after you finished the trilogy)

I really missed the characters a lot, but I kind of expected some more romance from this book. I was carving some cute scenes between Baz and Simon. The book suprised me with a whole other angle, the one where the hero wakes up only to see that the word was successfully safed and he is not needed anymore. Some heros might see their destiny fulfilled, but this was not the case with Simon. He had just lost his purpose and struggled to find or reinvent himself again. Even though I did not get many of those romantic moments, I was pleaseantly suprised with a story nobody expected, but everybody should read sometimes. If you fall down, you don't have to get up right away. It's okay to just lie on the ground and pity yourself for a bit. That's what Simon did and I could completely understand him. I don't know if I would have gotten up again. He has his friends and they aretruly amazing - how I missed Penny and Baz - and together they go on another adventure together. The best part about this book is the writing. After reading the first page I was immediately sucked into the story again and felt and dreamt with Agatha, Baz, Penny and Simon. In this book I got to know Agatha a little better. I didn't particulary like her in the first book and I think I still don't, but at least I understand her a lot better now. This is all due to the different POVs throughout the book (Baz, Simon, Penny and Agatha). I can relate to Penny the most, because I guess we are both know-it-alls and hopeless nerds. Baz also seems to have lost himself a bit, but finds himself again under the stars in America and most importantly with Simon. To see their love for each other flourish on the one hand and unattentend to on the other broke my heart. I would have loved to just scream at them to kiss and make up. But as always them being only fictional characters prevented that. So I had to hope, read and cry a little. This book is very emotional - beware! While the characters and the writing were as always exeptional, the story lacked a little ... purpose. They went on an adventure so there had to be some elements to make it count as one (enemies, fights, romance....), but they were all thrown together randomly. As if the author let some dice decide who could be the enemy, and which obstacles this group of friends should overcome on their journey. Unfortunately characters and writing alone can't carry a whole sequel, when the first book had all the right elements. I hope this will get better in the final and I am also again hoping for some cute Simon and Baz action.

Opening this book felt so great! I have missed this so much! But it was also heart-wrenching... I felt like I was coming home, to a place so soft and sweet and profoundly peaceful. I love feeling this way with books! Simon is profoundly depressed. He does nothing all day... He loves Baz but thinks they should break up because he fell in love with who he was before but now he's a screw up and that Baz deserves better... They barely look at each other and it punched a hole in my heart to read it... It had been months since they acted like boyfriends and it's so damned sad! Agatha is still running as far away from her past as she can, but she doesn't fit any better in California with Ginger, her friend, than she did in Watford with the people there... She ignores Penny's calls and texts as much as she can, but now Penny, Baz and Simon are planning to go see her while in America. At first Simon doesn't want to go to America even though that's something he and Penny have been planning for years and he can actually picture it. But she already has tickets and a way to spell away the wings on Simon's back for a time. Besides, he has done nothing but lie in the couch for weeks so he's overdue for a change in scenery. When they arrive in Chicago there is a blue Mustang waiting for them, courtesy of Penny. Simon is so excited even though he can't drive, but he finds it equally cool for Baz to be driving. They drive to Micah's first because Penny needs to talk to him. Seeing it from her perspective only makes it seem like they are couple goals! A long-distance relationship that works very well, although the fact that they barely see each other is extremely weird. But getting his perspective turns it all so sad and pitiful, too... In the last two years they have barely talked. They didn't talk for 2 months and Penny didn't find it odd. Micah said multiple times that he was tired of the long distance and that he thought they were drifting apart but she never listened... So he moved on while she thought they were still together and Penny is so unbearably sad... While Penny is talking with Micah, Baz teaches Simon how to drive and it's such a sweet thing, even though they are kind of weird together, like they don't know how to be together post war... Us Europeans are way too “pampered” compared to Americans when it comes to travel. A 31-hour trip takes Americans (or in this case Simon, Baz and Penny) all the way across the country. A trip that long will get me clear across Europe! I find it funny how very appalled Penny is that it would take her that long to get to California from Chicago. Maybe you should have planned this trip properly, love... Baz has a long list of things he hates, which includes the wind, the sun and some things about Penny, namely the not-plan she came up with even though it's good. But that's mostly because he's grumpy due to hunger. And the sun beating down on him is not helping. When they stop at a restaurant, Penny finally tells them about Micah and, even though he's desperate to eat, he sits with her and hugs her and comforts her and lets her cry, which is really sweet, but then he has to go and eat before he drains her. Simon and Baz don't even sleep in the same bed... Simon is suffering from PTSD and his sense of self-worth is non-existent and that makes me so incredibly sad that I want to cry for him! He's in a relationship with someone he loves and who loves him back deeply, but he feels so horrible that he can't stand Baz's touch or gaze... His feelings bleed through the pages… I love these characters so much that it's devastating to see them suffering this way... And Penny... Penny thought she was in love but I don't think she truly was... She didn't really mind not seeing Micah in person. She didn't want to go to America to study; she hoped he'd change his mind and come to her instead, basically that he'd let her rule his life like her mother does to her father. I don't think that she ever fell in love, she may willed herself into it with a boy that was always around her but that would eventually go back to his home, across the ocean, and she's have a steady thing without any of the trouble... And that's not what love is... The trio ends up in a Renaissance fair where most people are disguised and Simon's wings are mistaken for cosplay. They have fun and Simon is laughing. He and Baz even mock sword fight (and Simon let's him win). But then Baz smells vampires and they follow the group of them because they have human women who they will hurt. A fight ensues. Simon doesn't have magic to defend himself, meaning he doesn't have his magic sword now and he ends up impaling one of the vampires. The fight is amazing and all humans think it's a show! After it's over and they are back in the car Simon kisses Baz because it was all so hot! And I'm so incredibly happy in that moment, during this scene! And it doesn't really end until the moment, later that night, in which they are running around a field, chasing and catching fireflies and having fun. Then my heart stops in my chest with sadness. A firefly pauses on Simon's head and Baz carefully moves in to kiss him, so as not to startle the bug away. But Simon turns his head as Baz's lips brush his and he is left wondering if it's over, if he doesn't want to be with him anymore, even though he doesn't have to courage to ask because he's afraid Simon doesn't love him anymore... My heart! Honestly! I was extremely happy with the previous scene, high on it, and then, with just a couple sentences, just a glance really at the words broke my heart... A truck is following Simon, Penny and Baz, for a long time, and Simon takes an exit to see if they go away. But no. Penny casts spells but nothing works. They are asked to pull over but they ignore it. They are in the middle of nowhere, in a gravel road. They can't get to any town and suddenly the car stutters to a stop, next to carhenge. The person who was following them turns out to be a Normal, Shepard, who knows about magic and all that and is the guy that helped Baz back at the fair. He was curious about them so he follows them and the results are disastrous. They are in a Quiet Zone where no magic exists because there are not enough people around. These zones belong to creatures who can attack magicians of they enter their territory, so Shepard, Baz, Simon and Penny are quickly surrounded. As they are being patted down in search of wands, Baz tries to talk them out of the situation. But when it's his time to be searched and the guy keeps pawing at his "back pockets" Simon flips and stabs the creature with Baz's wand. (I mean, I know Baz is hot, but damn son, his boyfriend is right there!) They manage to fight their way out of the situation and escape with Shepard's help but Baz still gets shot, although nothing serious due to his vampire DNA, which earns him Simon-cuddles! When they first stop, so Baz can hunt, Penny and Simon plan on ditching Shepard but first they need to rest. The guy is honest and nice and he knows a lot about magic! And he also has good points about magic and magicians (humans aren't all stupid and clueless!). Still, Penny spells him when they leave. They try to put in evasive techniques but to be honest it was bound to go wrong with these three! They have no idea what they can find wherever they go, they should have risked having Shepard! At least then they would not walk into a dragon's lair because Baz needs to feed before they go to Agatha! The dragon lady wants to kill Penny because she's a magician and Baz because he's a hybrid vampire who can do magic. And that's a problem now because vampires are trying to perform magic. Agatha was right when she said NowNext was a cult. They are the Next Blood, the vampires trying to also be magicians and that's what the dragon thinks Baz is until he explains what happened when he was a child to her and Shepard. Because of course the spells didn't work on him and he followed them to his friend, Margaret the dragon. But he vouches for the trio and they all promise to end NowNext so she lets them go. Shepard seems to be really nice and I ship him with Penelope. But they all seem to be happy, especially Simon who appears to be getting better! He wants to touch and kiss Baz just not to be kissed, which complicates things... Still, he's feeling freer now under the endless sky and air and I'm happy for him! Shepard's friend is the river! And she's quite sweet, she even gives them a possible clue as to where to find these new vampires. And Simon and Baz share a long moment in the back of the truck that reminded me so much of the forest scene in Carry On, less intense but just as sweet. And also painful because Baz thinks he did something that led to Simon pushing him away... And another scene reminiscent of Carry On is one where Baz has to meet vampires for information. This time it's in a hotel run by vampires, in a party for vampires. He goes alone this time, there's no other way, but Simon doesn't want to let that happen, even though he has to. Baz meets this vampire who shows him how a vampire can live in Las Vegas: free, without killing, with no worries of persecution... Even I'm in love with the idea and I half want them to move there so Baz can be freer than he is in London! And it works for everyone! Baz is free, Simon can fly in the desert without much issues, and Penny can stay close to Shepard (they are OTP!). It's perfect. Baz goes for a walk with Lamb, his new vampire friend, who to get him drunk and to have him drink from a human. When Baz refuses, the other man gets angry because he knows he's been lying to him. Still, Baz begs him to tell him about Next Blood so he can save his friend and he accedes. Simon, Baz, Penny and Shepard argue about the meeting with Lamb and Simon doesn't want his boyfriend flirting with the man (he's never been this possessive!) but he doesn't tell that to Baz, and he has to let him go if they want information. Even when Simon is invisible in Lamb's apartment and is being a gigantic a****** Lamb still hears them out and helps them! Baz and Simon fight hard when Baz says he trusts Lamb (who's the King of vampires, apparently!). And Baz feels a kinship to the man and something else that he can't tell Simon because then he'll truly flip and that's that he likes the way he looks at him... Lamb gives every mage in Las Vegas over to Next Blood, including Simon and Penny! And even Shepard, who follows them because he knows that where they are is a Quiet Zone! And Baz can do nothing! Penny can't do anything! Neither can Agatha or Simon! By some miracle the Burning Lad parade is passing close enough to the action that Agatha can perform a spell, especially when she manages to indicate that to Penny and she leans against her friend, sharing the magic stone she swallowed! These two were amazing! The fight is a mess but they somehow all survive! Agatha is coming back, even if it's to just get her wand back. Penny commanded Shepard to go back with them, because he's cursed and maybe her mom can help. Baz told Simon that he'd not be happy anywhere without him, after he told him he could stay in Vegas and not hide, and I don't know what Simon would respond if Penny hadn't come running saying Watford was in trouble. I don't think I've felt this need for the next book since Shatter Me and that was back in 2014 and the sequels were out! But now what am I supposed to do for a year, or longer!, without the next book? How am I to cope, to move on to other books, when all I want to do is re-read Carry On and this book and cry until Any Way the Wind Blows comes out? This book was fantastic, it showed that life is not the happily ever after we all want it to be after the story ends and the hero saves the day. The hero hurts too and so do the people who love them. Life isn't perfect, relationships are hard and people have to figure out how to deal with them in the best way possible, which is not easy and not always happens. This book was heart-wrenching and heart-warming in the most fantastical ways and I am in desperate need of the next one! I really feel like I can't move past this book and I just want to cry...

So, I gave into the pressure of reading this, because y'all mostly hated it and I'm a bitch for controversy :D And I remember having criticized Carry On for lacking real depth already, but the sequel basically gave a giant fuck you to the fanbase that would be inclined to read it. Why's that, you ask? So: After Carry On I was sucked in and what I wanted was Snow on Grimm-Pitch romance, because we got so very little of it in book 1. Then I was baited with the promise of a road trip and a flowery suit on Baz and I was ready for a romp that would deliver on all the desires I had after Carry On. Which would've been the logical YA, audience oriented solution. But fuck me, that's not what we got. This book was very much plot/drama driven, the relationship/emotions parts were super short and rushed, if present at all. ThE mIsCoMmUnIcAtIoN iS tOo MuCh, uNbEaRaBlY sO!!! The plot starts out with nothing but broken hearts, but at the end of it?!? NOTHING WAS REALLY RESOLVED! And that makes me grumpy :D Like, up until the epilogue I didn't get why everybody thought it was SO bad, but then the narrator said epilogue and I nearly fell over, because NOTHING GOT A CONCLUSION. SPOILERS We didn't get to hear about the aftermath of this whole ordeal, although it has been hinted at constantly through the book. That lukewarm "let's bring the human back over to England" came out of nowhere, makes no sense AND DOES NOT SUFFICIENTLY END ANYTHING. There was no personal arc that actually finished somewhere (Penny is challenged by a broken heart, but the ex boyfriend is forgotten after a day and a half and then nothing; Simon has bottomless self doubt, and while he does finally start to see a future for himself, he did not really address that and in that concept of the future he gave a flying fuck about how the people around him would fit into it; Baz is still helplessly in love, but unable to just spit it out and Simon is unable to believe it and Agatha has no real resolution either for her fleeing England nor her tinily hinted at romantic interest and the human is so underdeveloped that I don't know what to make of him.) I honestly would've forgiven it all, if there were only a solid, borderline cheesy, but hell of fulfilling romantic arc between Simon and Baz, but not only did we get nothing but struggle and cuddling in the face of doubt about the relationship, but THERE WAS NO REAL HAPPY ENDING?! How? Could that happen? That is virtually the only reason we all picked this up, so how is there nothing in it that will have us all go our merry way, happy that our thick idiots finally can be happy? I'm gonna vent-read other reviews now and hope for back-up in that department :D Sorry for the rant, I'm just really disappointed and dissatisfied and a little broken hearted here.

I really liked this book, because it doesn‘t show a Happy End. It shows how the characters deal with the trauma they experienced and I felt with them. It was beautifully written and even tho Simon and Baz didn‘t have any mushy moments without concerns I felt the love they have for each other. (Sorry for any grammar errors ^^)
