This is super straight-forward military sf, and it doesn't stray from the template at all. It uses the jargon, has shallow characters, focuses on military mannerism, etc. Our protagonist also doesn't mind killing the people he's supposed to protect in a very utilitarian kind of way. This series was recommended to me, but even with things change at the end I can't see how it'd recover from being 'just a boring mil-sf' that doesn't offer much beyond action.
