Neun lange Jahre suchen die Weisen der vier Nationen verzweifelt den neuen Avatar, bis sie endlich den charismatischen Erdbändiger Yun finden und in ihm den Avatar erkennen – doch die anderen drei Elemente wollen sich einfach nicht seinem Willen beugen. Die Frage nach dem wahren Avatar kommt erst wieder auf, als seine Dienerin und Freundin Kyoshi auf einer Mission gewaltige Bändigerfähigkeiten beweist. Unausgebildet und ohne Vorbereitung muss Kyoshi entgegen allen Widrigkeiten die Rolle des Avatars annehmen. Der erste der beiden Romane über Avatar Kyoshi beginnt die Reise eines Mädchens aus einfachen Verhältnissen, die auch Jahrhunderte nachdem sie zum Avatar wurde gefürchtet und bewundert wird. 1000/10 Sternen Vorab diese Bewertung ist vielleicht nicht ganz objektiv. Ich als großes Fangirl, der schon Jahre lang nichts Neues von dieser großartigen Serie bzw. Universum bekommen hat, bin etwas voreingenommen. das Buch hat großartige Charaktere und erzählt eine ganz andere Geschichte und gibt Einblicke wie unterschiedlich man das Da-Sein als Avatar führen kann. Jedoch würde ich dieses Buch niemanden empfehlen der die Serie nicht geschaut hat, denn für diese kann es sehr unverständlich sein. Es wird nicht immer alles detailgenau erzählt. Ansonsten nichts zu bemängeln. Es ist spannend, hat viele Plottwists und sympathische Charaktere. Zusätzlich entwickelt sich eine wundervolle Liebe und dass ich das mal Sage, der hier ja besonders in dieser Gruppe Liebesromane gehated hat ist schon was besonderes. Zu Sprache und Schreibstil kann ich nicht viel sagen weil ich vor Freude nicht drauf geachtet habe aber es hat sich sehr flüssig gelesen. Für jeden Fan also weiter zu empfehlen.

The book gives an interesting inside into the story of Kyoshi and I loved reading it. It was really cool seeing the upbringing and struggles of a character I already loved while watching the show. The direction they took her character was surprising to me, considering what I knew of her before reading the books, but I found myself really liking the less untouchable and more human Kyoshi. In general all the characters were pretty 3-dimensional and likeable. The romance wasn’t too prominent but when it was there it was really sweet and believable. Another thing I liked was the fact that the book went into detail about the politics of the Avatar-world at the time. But although I found the world building aspects very interesting I can imagine it’s not for everyone. Generally I’d say being a fan of the series won’t automatically make you love the book and you shouldn’t expect it to be exactly like atla. But when you give it the chance to be it’s own story it can be great. It won’t work for everyone but it worked for me. 4,5/5

Reading this felt like a real experience, sure it had its flaws, but I still enjoyed it so much. The writing style, for me, was really effective in transporting Kyoshi's emotions, some more raw, some more delicate. I was engaged from the very beginning (which was a little slow, but I like it that way) and grew to care for the characters really fast. Even though I never felt forced to compare this to ATLA, I need to say it is a darker story. Nothing in here is black or white, everything and everyone is more in a grey area where everyone does questionable stuff but it's still hard to condemn anyone. My biggest problem is that the reveals didn't work for me, they felt kind of cheap, but that wasn't that much of an issue. Also, the transition phase from Kyoshi's life before to being the Avatar was kind of abrupt, but it kind of makes sense after what went down. I wish that this book was longer and we got to explore the people, places and how this world was back than even more. There are some of the things I already loved in ATLA and Korra: the protagonists really feel the consequences of what happens, we get glimpses of the villian's POV, there is a little bit of humor... The author seems to understand what made the original series work and still made a story that doesn't try to be like that. Not sure it will work for every fan, but it absolutely worked for me.
