Everybody thinks they're not racist, everybody thinks they're a feminist. But is that so? Listening to this book hurts, it challenges the perception you have of yourself as the "good one", the "righteous one". I just learned so much about white privilege and class privilege, it blew my socks off. As a white woman and a "feminist" i found the feminist chapter especially eye opening! My definition of feminism as reaching for equality between men and women is just wrong (btw the definition of feminism trying to end all men is either!). I do see the criticism of some readers saying its to focused on the UK and I get it. But what else is the UK born author supposed to write about? Write your own book about Germany then...

Eddo-Lodge is talking about race, gender and class inequality in the UK and she is talking about the country's history and how it bears on the present. It was interesting for me to learn about the discussion in Britain and amazing to see how many parallels there are to the US. It's like all the societies in the world claim to be so different while we are all acting out the same play book. What struck me personally is in the U.K. and in the US how little the country's dark side of history is being taught in history class in school. There is just some glossing over without real discussion.

"Why I'm No Longer Tallking to White People About Race" (2017) der britischen Autorin Reni Eddo-Lodge ist ein moderner Klassiker zu Anti-Rassismus und intersektionalem Feminismus. Das Buch wurde vor dem Mord an George Floyd im Mai 2020 und der Black-Lives-Matter-Bewegung veröffentlicht, hat aber insbesondere seitdem viel Aufmerksamkeit erfahren. Die aktuelle Auflage enthält ein Nachwort von 2022. Darin stellt Eddo-Lodge die Entwicklungen seit 2017 dar und beschreibt, wie Anti-Rassismus plötzlich starke mediale Aufmerksamkeit erlangt hat. Gesellschaftlich ist eine Sensibilisierung eingetreten, die allerdings auch zu Gegenwind geführt hat. Der Titel des Buchs bezieht sich darauf, dass Eddo-Lodge häufig entgegegengehalten wurde, es gebe keinen strukturellen Rassismus. Indem behauptet wird, Herkunft und Ethnie spielten in einer angeblich rein meritokratischen Gesellschaft keine Rolle, werden strukturelle Nachteile geleugnet und die Verantwortung auf Individuen verlagert. Auch in feministischen Kreisen wurde Eddo-Lodge häufig vorgeworfen, sie erzeuge unnötige Spaltungen. Die Diskussion ist ähnlich wie bei der um den liberalen Feminismus, der Karriereaufstiege von Einzelpersonen als feministische Erfolge feiert und so die Verantwortung auf das Individuum verschiebt und gesellschaftliche Hindernisse übersieht. Eddo-Lodge beharrt auf dem Begriff des strukturellen Rassismus, um aufzuzeigen, dass es sich nicht lediglich um rassistische Einzelakte handelt. Die Menschen, die einer Person of Colour begegnen, sind in der Regel nicht offen rassistisch oder böswillig. Aber sie agieren in einem System, das strukturell rassistische Elemente beinhaltet, die sie internalisiert haben und - ohne bewusste Reflexion - zwangsläufig reproduzieren.

Stumbling upon the book, I instantly fell in love with the title. “Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race“ basically does the exact opposite, stirs conversations on why we have to talk about race and shows, how harmful it is to play the “I don’t see color” card. A very good read about racism, feminism and the importance of intersectionality, that every (white) person should read. It’s brutally honest, vulnerable and eye opening -even if you consider yourself to be educated on these topics.

Wichtiges und berührendes Buch. Die Autorin setzt sich mit Rassismus und der Geschichte von Farbigen in Großbritannien auseinander und somit auch mit ihrer eigenen Identität. Der Titel des Buches bezieht sich auf Diskussionen mit Weißen, die sich ihrer Privilegien nicht bewusst sind und deswegen Gespräche dazu ins Leere laufen lassen. Die Mechanismen der Argumentation (oder Nicht-Argumentation), die sie hier beschreibt, lassen sich auch sehr gut auf andere Auseinandersetzungen zum Thema Diskrimierung anwenden und öffnen an der einen oder anderen Stelle wirklich die Augen.

Dieses Buch empfehle ich jedem! Wir sollten uns alle mal mehr mit den "White Privileges" auseinandersetzten. Das Buch dient zur Aufklärung, aber gleichzeitig fordert es auf, bewusster durchs Leben zu gehen und den strukturellen Rassismus, so wie Eddo-Lodge ihn benennt, aufzudecken. Und das wird nicht leicht, denn da werden vermutlich einige unschöne Wahrheiten sichtbar. Ich bin ziemlich geflasht von Dingen, die mir so noch nie bewusst waren. Umso mehr möchte ich mich mit diesem Thema auseinandersetzten und nicht mehr so blind durchs Leben laufen. Deswegen möchte ich aber auch mehr über diese Themen lesen und mich weiterbilden.
