Everyone This Christmas Has a Secret was an interesting and fairly enjoyable read, but not without flaws. The writing style was definitely different from what I’m used to in mystery novels. The story is told in a very meta way, with the detective essentially narrating and “writing” the book himself. That made the POV feel unusual and sometimes a bit distancing, but I didn’t dislike it — it was simply something new that took some getting used to. I appreciated the classic mystery structure, especially the moment where all suspects are gathered and eliminated one by one. It gave strong Death in Paradise vibes, which I genuinely enjoyed. The case itself was engaging, even if some character decisions toward the end felt unnecessary and reckless for a detective. One thing that really disappointed me was the “advent calendar” concept. The book explicitly suggests reading one chapter per day, but with 26 chapters plus an epilogue, it didn’t fully deliver on that promise. While the extra chapters serve as wrap-up, I would have preferred the story to be fully resolved within 24 chapters, followed by just an epilogue. I also didn’t realize this book is part of an existing series set in the same universe with recurring characters. It works as a standalone, but I’m sure some emotional beats — especially regarding the protagonist’s past — would have landed better if I had read the previous books. Overall, this was a solid, entertaining mystery with a creative concept and festive atmosphere, but some narrative choices and structural issues kept it from being a standout read for me.

Die Ex-Frau eines Detektivs wird wenige Tage vor Weihnachten wegen Mordes verhaftet und weiß nicht mehr was passiert ist. Das Opfer ist ihr Lebensgefährte. Das Buch hat süße 240 Seiten und etwas mehr als 24 Kapitel. Es kann als Adventskalender genutzt werden und das wird auch vom Protagonisten im Buch empfohlen. Denn es gibt zwei andere Bücher vom Autor mit dem gleichen Detektiv und in diesem Buch spricht er immer mal wieder mit den Lesern. Zum Beispiel bezeichnet er die Geschichte selber als 'Weihnachtsspecial' von ihm und er kommentiert auch den Aufbau der Geschichte. Ich musste mich kurz daran gewöhnen, aber dann war es recht unterhaltsam. Ich mochte, dass die beiden Ex-Ehepartner so vernünftig miteinander umgegangen sind. Die ganzen anderen Figuren musste ich arg sortieren im Kopf, aber die Auflösung mochte ich. Auch dass man als Leser aufgefordert wird mitzurätseln. Am Ende gibt es ein klassisches "Stand-Off" zwischen Detektiv und den Verdächtigen, was mir auch immer sehr gefällt. Insgesamt ein kurzes aber gutes Buch, das ich durchaus weiterempfehlen würde für die Weihnachtszeit, für Fans von Murder Mysteries.
