Coming-of-age but make it a goddess in the underworld
The book is separated into three parts: Childhood, Adolescence and Adulthood. As is often the case, I found the first two-thirds quite slow-going, but the last third captured me. I’m intrigued to verify with greek mythology how much of this retelling is based on ‚facts‘ and what the author added. I loved all the characters, they’re well portrayed, even though some of them have little screen time. Hekates character development is nicely portrayed and makes sense. I love that she kind of stays a rebel and that she just does her own thing, ignoring what Olympus demands of her. The reason this is a 4-star and not a 5-star read to me, ist that I didn’t get the use of poetic style. Even though I usually really like it, here I feel like it didn’t add to the story or the experience, the only thing it did was speed the process of reading. Favourite quotes: «To become a Goddess, you must first find what nourishes you forever.» p. 51 → find your own purpose without listening or relying on the judgement of others «A woman they cannot control, whether Goddess or mortal, is a dangerous woman.» p. 152 «It was here that I learned that death was the gentle art of release.» p. 253 «Perhaps this was what womanhood was. The dangerous knowledge of who you are and what you could do with that power if pushed.» p. 277
