Insgesamt fand ich das Buch wirklich gut. Für mich hätte es deutlich länger sein können um Charaktere und ihre Beziehungen untereinander mehr auszubauen. Außerdem hätte ich generell gerne mehr über die Welt erfahren und die Wechsel zwischen Vergangenheit und aktuellem geschehen gingen mir zum Teil etwas zu schnell. Die Story selbst war sehr fesselnd und ich bin gut rein gekommen. Teilweise braucht es aber einen starken Magen, weil das Buch sehr Gore-lastig ist.

Schon der Einstieg hat mich mitten hineingeworfen, ohne dass ich so recht wusste, was eigentlich passiert ist. Genau dieses Gefühl der Desorientierung zieht sich durch das ganze Buch – manchmal packend, manchmal etwas verwirrend. Die Geschichte spielt auf zwei Zeitebenen:
Zum einen begleiten wir Alessa, die entführt und in Hellebore zwangseingeschrieben wurde. Wir erleben, wie sie sich mit der neuen Umgebung auseinandersetzt und andere kennenlernt, die dasselbe Schicksal teilen. Zum anderen gibt es die Zeitebene des Abschlusstages, an dem sie gemeinsam mit anderen in die Bibliothek flieht. Gerade dieser Handlungsstrang war für mich der spannendere und intensivere. Ich hätte mir gewünscht, dass er noch mehr Raum bekommt. Teilweise fand ich die Struktur verwirrend. Eine lineare Erzählweise hätte der Geschichte für meinen Geschmack gutgetan, um die Handlung noch besser greifbar zu machen. Dennoch: Die Kreativität ist enorm. Cassandra Khaw verwebt Dark Academia, Body Horror und Gore zu einer sehr eigenen Mischung, die definitiv nicht alltäglich ist. Auch wenn ich mir in manchen Momenten mehr Klarheit gewünscht hätte, hat mich das Buch durch seine Einzigartigkeit und die intensive Atmosphäre beeindruckt. Ein ungewöhnlicher, wilder Trip, der sicher nicht jedem gefallen wird, aber wer Lust auf experimentelle Dark-Academia-Horror-Vibes hat, sollte sich darauf einlassen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆

The Library at Hellbore is a very interesting and somewhat gruesome and thrilling book where you absolutely can’t complain about to little blood. But as bloody as it is, as confusing it is, at least for me. The timeline is jumping back and forth A LOT and a lot of stuff happens that tools pretty long time until it’s finally explained which made it hard to follow the story. Especially the start was just confusing and i even checked a few times if i accidentally turned more than a page as I wasn’t really able to connect the dots at all. Progressing further more and more is explained though and it does get more and more exiting and at the end I have to admit that I liked it quite a bit. But getting to the point where the confusion starts lifting takes some time so I personally would recommend this book only to someone who’s willing to fight through confusion and does not expect to understand every little thing right from the beginning.

I was ready for Dark Academia with gore! I wanted to devour this book and let it devour me. I'm sad to report that I could not get into the flow of it. And this is what the book needs from the reader. It's not Dark Academia as you know it, it might not even be like anything else you've read. And I loved the uniqueness of it all. But the actual story lost me almost right away. However, the ending caught me attention and I shouted a 'hell yeah' in my head. So all in all it's 3,5/5 stars for me. I highly recommend trying it for yourself though. The audiobook is very well narrated. I loved the voice, and all the voices the narrator gave to the characters.
