It took me a bit to finish this book, just because the story throws readers into a richly complex world filled with gothic aesthetics, bone magic, and sharp humor. The beginning requires some patience as the universe and its rules slowly reveal themselves, but once the story finds its rhythm, it becomes difficult to put down. Beneath the dark fantasy elements lies a cleverly structured mystery that keeps tension building until the dramatic finale. There is blood and bones everywhere and no space for a squeazy stomach, trust me. By the end, the emotional stakes are so high that the sequel becomes less a choice and more a necessity, very much to my own surprise.

SPOILERS! There was a lot of hype around the book, but it just didn't work for me. Gideon's great, mostly. The murder mystery was nicely executed as well. The worldbuilding, the humour and the ending were what fell flat for me. The humour mostly consists of quips, puns and jabs and they felt kinda edgy and teeny most of the time. The worldbuilding was honestly pretty sparse. I don't need a ton of exposition, but when we get introduced to all the houses, it's all about the new characters and their backgrounds are irrelevant, aside from the 8th, which gets some highlighting. Anyway, until the ending this was still a 3/5 for me. And then we got two tropes that I really didn't like. The first one was enemy to lover. Why did this have to happen? There wasn't enough redemption there for this to be believable for me. So it felt forced in addition to being shitty trope. The second shitty trope, which was admittedly only hinted at, is Gideon being a legacy character. Again ... why? This trope almost always devalues characters and stories for me. Tl;dr: Fun murder mystery, that's tangentially lesbian and definitely not in space, with some plot/worldbuilding issues and humour that some will probably like a lot but might feel offputting for others.

Ich mag Bücher, die einen fordern, aber Gideon the Ninth war ein Exemplar, bei dem ich ab ca der Hälfte nicht mehr wusste, was da überhaupt abgeht. Zwar scheint der Plot am Anfang sehr einleuchtend (und den Twist am Ende über einen gewissen Charakter habe ich erschnüffelt, sobald der das erste Mal da war), allerdings war alles andere einfach nur wirr. Bis zu dem Punkt, wo alles rechts und links stirbt, war ich noch dabei, danach ist immer irgendwas passiert. Was genau da passiert ist, keine Ahnung. Hauptgrund dafür dürfen die 16 Charaktere sein, die einem vor die Füße geworfen werden, von denen ich mir neben unseren zwei Protagonisten genau 4 merken konnte (und zwei haben schnell ins Gras gebissen). Teilweise konnte ich die nur anhand ihrer Hausnamen zueinander zuordnen, nicht aber, welches Haus was macht etc. Dazu kommen noch mehr Charaktere (Wächter, Ausbilder etc) und irgendwann hab ich aufgegeben. Das ist verdammt schade, denn Gideon selbst ist ein fabelhafter Charakter. Ihre Erzählstimme ist einzigartig und ich habe ihre Sprüche geliebt. Nur hat sie das irgendwann nicht mehr retten können. Darüber hinaus: Is the lesbian necromancer in the room with us? Denn Gideon hatte mehr Chemestry mit der aus dem Siebten (schon wieder den Namen vergessen), als mit Harrow. Harrow empfand ich (bis auf 2 "ich mag dich doch bitch" Szenen) underwhelming. Auch wenn Gideon mich bei Laune gehalten hat, hat sie nicht gereicht, um die Reihe weiterhin schmackhaft für mich zu machen.

I regret buying this book in English (me and my pride lol) but alas, I got through it and I had a lot of fun. Some thoughts: - The writing really isn’t easy and the book expects you to know a lot of anatomy and bone-related vocabulary. - It’s a wild ride. I was confused almost the entire time (it’s part of the experience). Be prepared to take notes. - That being said, once you clock the basics of the world and all the names and titles (there’s so many of them) it becomes less tedious and a lot more interesting to experience the story. - Also, Gideon is a DELIGHTFUL protagonist. She’s just as confused. She spends half the book creatively insulting Harrow. It’s just very fun to be stuck in her head. - The ENDING???

3.5⭐️ I would love to give this four stars, because in the end the story got quite interesting to read, but overall the book wasn’t able to suck me in as much as it could’ve done. As well as, for me, personally, there are one too many things which bothered me… First of all it felt like I was thrown into the middle of a story with no prior information, which was utterly confusing for the majority of the beginning of the book… I missed an introduction to the world, the universe and a little more background information on basically everything. Second and something of much importance to me is the author’s style of writing/story telling… While I had no problem with the comprehension of what I was reading it was still a little confusing at times. There was so much going on in one sentence and pretty much throughout the whole book it felt rather difficult to imagine what the current scene and setting were like. It felt like the story could have used a little more descriptive writing, in my opinion. Other than that I had a good time reading, but as of now will not be reading the rest of the series.

Ich kann verstehen warum manche sich schwer mit dem Buch tun. Wenn man aber das 1/3 hinter sich hat, bekommt man eine fantastische Story geliefert. Was ein Ritt. Gerade die Art und Weise wie das Buch geschrieben ist, macht Gideon für mich so relatable und wenn man sich eben genau darauf einlässt, macht es besonders Spaß.

I had no idea of what was happening half the time but the atmospheric, grotesque writing with the refreshingly „simpleminded“ main character had me inhale the words. Gorgeous, uncanny, and gothic. A lot of women flirting with each other. Very interesting concept of a necromantic solar system. Loved the light sci-fi and can‘t wait to read more about this universe in the next book.

Gideon hat als Waisenkind nicht viel Spaß auf ihrem Planeten, dem neunten Haus, einem Ort voller sehr alter Nekromant:innen, die ein sehr altes Grab bewachen. Als ihr Fluchtplan scheitert, bekommt sie eine andere Möglichkeit angeboten, den deprimierenden Planeten zu verlassen: als Kavalier ihres Bullies, Harrow. Die beiden Frauen müssen fortan auf einem anderen heruntergekommenen Planeten Tests bestehen um unsterbliche Lyctors des Gottkaisers zu werden. Ich finde die Charaktere und das Worldbuilding (Nekromant:innen im Weltraum ❤️) super, aber für meinen Geschmack waren es fast zu viele Plottwists. Und oft musste ich Dinge mehrmals lesen um zu verstehen, was eigentlich gerade passiert (oder halt einfach hinnehmen, dass ich gerade gar nicht verstanden habe wie z.b. Eine wichtige Person gerade gestorben ist). Ich werde es definitv noch mal lesen müssen, und dann hoffentlich mehr mitnehmen.

Gideon just wants to leave and she gets to leave but not how she planned. When she gets caught trying to flee, her childhood nemesis and necromancer Harrowhark Nonagesimus makes Gideon her Cavalier for a dangerous and mysterious trial on another planet. Gideon also hates that but has no other choice so she packs her sunglasses (literally) and joins Harrowhark on a trip that is definitely not at all relaxing and filled with bones, death, murder and weird locked doors. Without spoiling too much of the fun: Harrow and Gideon find themselves in situations that challenge every aspect of their beings and as a reader I went with them. The whole concept of the world is just extremely unique and I found myself enjoying all of the characters. I was angry, excited and scared but I also cried like 30 minutes after finishing the book. Gideon’s random “your mom” jokes do lighten the grim mood that comes with necromancy and all that jazz and for me this was the perfect mix. In conclusion: read it!

Ein verrücktes, dunkles und sehr witziges Buch. Ich war gefesselt beim lesen... Man muss damit klar kommen, dass man ohne viel Erklärung gleich in die Story geschmissen wird. Mich hat das aber nicht gestört, ich fand es spannend, alles nach und nach besser zu verstehen. Das Necromancer -System hat mir in der Umsetzung richtig gut gefallen. Aber mein Liebster Aspekt am Buch ist Gideon. Ich liebe ihre schroffe Art und und den übertriebenen Gebrauch an Schimpfwörtern :-D

Re-Read von 2024: Endlich habe ich meinen ReRead der Bücher begonnen! Zu meiner ursprünglichen Rezension kann ich nichts Neues hinzufügen. Immer noch ganz grosse klasse. Immer noch fünf Sterne. Original von 2020: Diesem Buch konnte ich nicht aus dem Weg gehen. Auch nicht, wenn ich es gewollt hätte. Es war einfach überall. Schlussendlich auch in meinem Bücherregal. Und ja, ich mochte es von Anfang an. Auch wenn man sich diese Welt etwas zu eigen machen muss, sie sträubt sich wenig, so liebte ich Gideon und Harrow und ihre Wortgefechte mehr und mehr. Und natürlich die düstere, blutige Welt. Auch die Mischung aus Fantasy, Horror und Sci-Fi ist Muir absolut gelungen. Ein richtiges Kunstwerk ist dieses Buch. Liebte ich schon das Buch an sich, so war ich dann hin und weg, als ich auf das Hörbuch umstieg. Moira Quirk ist die perfekte Stimme für Gideon. Ich konnte gar nicht mehr aufhören, zu hören. Es entstand eine regelrechte Sucht, die darin endete, dass ich Band zwei bereits vorbestellt habe. Ausserdem juckt es mich in den Fingern, Merchandise zu kaufen...

... aber leider bin ich gar nicht in die Story und die Charaktere reingekommen. Gideon und Harrow sind die einzigen, die ich mir halbwegs vorstellen konnte, aber ich habe mir so gut wie nie die Räumlichkeiten vorstellen können, oder was gerade genau passiert. Ich bin da aber auch etwas speziell, weil ich ein sehr visuelles Denken habe und es liegt auch nicht am Schreibstil, der fantastisch ist. Tamsyn Muir hat eine sehr faszinierende Art vor allem Dialoge zu schreiben, leider hat sie mich damit oft verloren. - Es ist definitiv eine persönliche Problem, was ich mit dem Buch hatte und jeder für den das Buch dennoch interessant klingt, sollte es definitiv versuchen. Es war nur einfach nicht meins.

With all the first and last names, job titles and house attachments we easily reach about 30 names to keep track of in the first 50 pages. Absolutely insane and the character development is obviously lacking because of it. While Gideon and Harrow receive some depth with a single thing in their past, all other characters and the constant tornado of names leave them just as empty hulls of responsibilities for their houses. Some are good at this, some are good at that. Honestly just terrible writing. The entire world is so lacking that i have no clue what the overall plan is. The necromancer theme is nice and rarely ever used, but thats another reason why that needs special care. Especially when special abilities take up a large portion of the story. All in all this feels like a throw away novel that could be way shorter and introduces a single issue for the second book to take care of. Overrated.

"While we were developing common sense, she studied the blade." I don't even really know what to say about this book, except that I love it a lot. The world-building took me a little to understand, but the plot drew me in immediately, keeping me invested throughout the book. The long list of characters on the first pages of the book made me afraid that I wasn't going to be able to keep up with all the names and characters, but they got important gradually, in small manageable groups that it was easy to keep track of for the most part. The relationship of the two main characters, Gideon and Harrow, was my favourite part of the book. It was so much fun to discover and unravel their past and motivations and how they'd move forward with it. Edit: Ok, on second thought it is unfair to just brag about the fact, that I didn't liked the book. Who am I to judge? Maybe my expectations were to high, maybe I've read to much of this genre and got tired and felt underwhelmed. The pace was just too slow and then it went too fast, and everytime someone entered the scene, I had to look her/him up who he/her was again, in which house, which postion, why is he there? Who is she talking to? What are they talking about? Who comes up with names like shononomgonomous?... there were too many characters and nearly all of them were flat. But this is just my opinion, no big deal, the success of this book speaks for itself it is a new york times bestseller and has a huge fanbase. Well, so does twilight and the fifty shades series, too. BUT: and here comes now the reason why I had to rewrite my review: Gideon is a female Protagonist who JUST. KICKS. ASS. from first page on! She is not a weak and unsecure female maincharacter who is not sure if she wants to date sexy werewolfboy or sparkling vampy mcvamp face. Gideon also doesn´t struggles with herself and needs male help in every Situation and decision. Nope. Not Gideon. Gideon kicks ass. And this is the direction YA books should lead to. I want my niece, when she is old enough to read this type of books, to grab one of plenty books, in which the female main char just kicks ass and is her own Boss. And it shouldn't even care, because we got used to it. And the fact that Gideon is queer is well handled in the book. It just doesn't appear! It's no big deal! She likes girls, fine, get over it! And this is the way it should be. Sure, on the cover they titled a "lesbian Necromancer space..." but this is just to catch more buyers, not Muirs fault/decision. Just Imagine for a Moment having a sticker on the hobbit: "a straight hobbit goes on an adventure!" or "straight harry discovers he is a wizard!" on HP. Ridiculous, right? Exactly. And this should be the same feeling someone should get holding this book in hers/his hands in 2030. This is why we have to applaud and appreciate Tamsyn Muirs work here for this "giant leap" in the right direction.

Started off reeaaaaal slow and was impossible to keep up with all of the characters they introduced. Then about halfway through the pace started picking up until a breakneck sprint at the end. It was glorious. But also, my mind is shattered and in pieces and my brain has left the chat. What??? I am so confused

It took me a few pages until I finally got into this book but when I did, it hit me. I am not the biggest fan of swearing in books - in my opinion it comes off as unnecessarily edgy - and the worldbuilding confused me at times but other than that, this was an amazing read. I am definitely going to read book 2. BUT the world so desperately needs more fleshing out. This is a weird mangle of "medieval times fantasy" and sci fi. The history makes fairly little sense and the blend of the genres only left me wondering what the point of the sci fi was. I understand the existence of the houses but not why they exist the way they do. The different planets make fairly little sense.

3.5 ✨ Alright, here goes nothing. It was very evident from the get go, that I could not for the life of me, get into this book. Like, at all. It was all just a huge bitch fest, people arguing and fighting for no reasons or valid points, all just to prove who had the stronger arm/sword/power, you get the picture. There was so much name dropping, that I could not keep up with any of them. And if I had a buck for every time someone died, got snatched in one way or the other, wasn’t what or who they seemed to be … I would be able to buy at least two books. Even when they tried to explain certain powers, I just sat there listening, going: come again? It was so confusing and if this had not been a buddy read, I would definitely dnf’d. But then, then the glorious half-book-mark happened, and somehow it started to get interesting and better. Gideon and Harrow became fascinating as a duo, not just as separate characters, the plot thickened and even tho we kept having one set back after another, it somehow went somewhere. The fane finale chapter had probably the best dialogue from the whole book. Mari and I kept quoting it to one another. Overall tho, the ending left me … pissed? Confused? Mad? Intrigued? And f*** me, now I have to read the second book after all!

This is a either-you-love-it-or-hate-it kind of book, and I'm still on the fence but more on a I'm-confuse-but-I-like-it kind of mindset. Gideon feels like a weird mashup of Hitchhiker's guide of the galaxy and an Agatha Christie mystery story. The tone and setting is extremely weird and the world and setting doesn't ever get explained which was really frustrating at times. However, the characters and humor really make the book shine. This is the kind of series that is gonna be a blast upon a re-read cause you will pick up on all the little things and won't just be in the What-the-hell-is-going-on???? headspace. Also, really recommend the audiobook!

very entertaining, though most of the descriptions went quite over my head as a non-native - probably one of the main reasons, why I took weeklong pauses sometimes. If you can, read this one in your native language! (some jokes might get lost though...) Too many bone words and a huge vocabulary! + big cast of great, comprehensible characters, very vivid, hilarious dialogues + no romance subplot + fun plot/mystery + Gideon's voice is amazing, very entertaining + great arc between the two main characters + I liked how little backstory we got and needed, because this book works just like that + surprising yet inevitable ending, fitting, I liked it - the first 40 pages were very hard to get into - the big fight scenes at the end felt too long but that might have just been me and my inability to really visualize what's going on - I'm bad with names and with such a big cast I had to leave open the character sheet on my laptop

Der Plot hat mich wirklich interessiert und ich liebe Geschichten, die LGBTQIA+ Repräsentation haben, aber ich kam und kam nicht in das Buch rein. Auch die Charaktere waren für mich nicht greifbar bzw. nicht so geschrieben, dass ich mich sonderlich für sie interessiert habe. In Sachen Schreibstil kann ich hier aber nicht meckern. Obwohl das Buch meiner Meinung nach nicht für Englisch-Anfänger geeignet ist, liest es sich wirklich sehr schön^^ Leider hat mich das Buch wohl auf einem falschen Fuß erwischt, denn ich habe mich beim Lesen doch sehr häufig gelangweilt. Da ich den Plot und den Schreibstil aber vom Ding her mochte, werde ich das Buch definitiv bald noch einmal lesen und sehen, ob sich meine Meinung ändert (bestimmt!). Mit der richtigen Lesestimmung (vermutlich im dunklen, kühlen Januar) liest sich ein Buch sowieso besser c;

~3,75 ⭐It took me so freaking long to finish this!! Also, it was the wrong decision to read the book in English instead of my native language because ngl there was a lot that I didn't understand (even though 90% of the books I read are in English). The final fight was too long for my liking, but all in all it was a good book. I enjoyed it (at least the parts I understood :')) and already bought the second book. Also, I really liked gideon <spoiler> and I'm really shocked that she died!!</spoiler> (may or may not she's now one of my fictional crushes)

I had the book on my wish list for a long time and was curious but also somehow skeptical - I had already looked into it a few times in the bookstore. Maybe I should learn to listen to my intuition when it comes to language. I can't say very much about the story - whether it's good or not, I don't know. But what I didn't get on with at all was the language. I don't like the way the characters express themselves, or the way they interact with each other. Something about it turns me off so much that I find them all really unlikable and shitty and just can't continue reading ... I'm just rolling my eyes and finding everything so silly, childish, over the top and .... lowbrow. I'll put the book aside for now; maybe there will come a time when I'll think differently about it.

Gideon Nav hat keine Lust mehr eine Dienerin des Neunten Hauses zu sein und hat alles für ihre Flucht vorbereitet. Kurz bevor sie endgültig fliehen kann, macht ihr ausgerechnet Harrowhark Nonagesimus, die Erbin des Hauses und Gideons größte Feindin einen Vorschlag, den sie notgedrungen annimmt. Gideon soll Harrowhark als Cavalierin an den kaiserlichen Hof begleiten, wo Harrowhark mit den anderen royalen Häuser an einem Wettkampf auf Leben und Tod teilnehmen wird. Bei diesem Hörbuch handelt es sich um den 1. Teil einer Trilogie. Es ist ca. 20 Stunden und 33 Minuten lang und wird von Martina Vogl vorgelesen, deren Stimme sehr gut zu Gideon passt und die auch sehr gut vorgelesen hat. Schon als ich den Klappentext gelesen habe, wusste ich, dass ich dieses Buch lesen bzw. dieses Hörbuch hören wollte. Der Science Ficition Anteil ist übriges nicht besonders groß, davon sollte man sich als jemand, der keine Science Ficiton mag, nicht abschrecken lassen. Die Autorin entführt ihre Leser in eine düstere und brutale Welt. Der Handlung ist recht komplex und es gibt sehr viele Charaktere in der Geschichte. Es gibt insgesamt 9 Häuser mit jeweils einem Nekromanten und einem Cavalier. Jedes der Häuser hat besondere Stärken und Schwächen und ich muss gestehen, dass ich beim Hören so meine Schwierigkeiten hatten, mir all diese Namen zu merken und vor allem dann auch richtig zuzuordnen. Die Handlung lebt auf jeden Fall von den sehr unterschiedlichen und sehr ungewöhnlichen Charakteren. Man weiß nie, wem man eigentlich trauen kann. Jedes Haus hat seine eigenen Pläne und Geheimnisse und es wird jede Menge intrigiert. Und dann ist da natürlich Gideon, die Hauptfigur, ist eine richtige Kick-Ass-Heldin mit einer sehr großen Klappe. Ich muss gestehen, dass sie mir mit ihrer Art nicht immer sympathisch war, sie ist laut und ordinär. Trotzdem mochte ich sie irgendwie auf ihre vorlaute Art. Eine Romanze gibt übrigens nicht, wer hier eine typische Romanze zwischen zwei Frauen erwartet, wird enttäuscht. Das würde auch gar nicht zu Gideon passen. Die Geschichte endet mit einem fiesen Cliffhanger. Ich hoffe sehr, dass der 2. Teil übersetzt. Als Hörbuch kann ich die Reihe nur bedingt empfehlen, dafür ist sie einfach zu komplex. Ich werde die Reihe auf jeden Fall weiter verfolgen, den 2. Teil aber dann lesen. Für mich war dieser Auftakt trotz meiner Kritik an dem Hörbuch, war die Geschichte ein richtiges Highlight und ich vergebe 5 von 5 Punkte für die Handlung.

Auf dieses Buch war ich sehr gespannt und bin eigentlich nur über eine Buchbox darauf aufmerksam geworden. Aber das Cover begeisterte mich und der Klappentext machte mich neugierig. Ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich "Einstiegsschwierigkeiten" hatte. Nicht wegen der Geschichte. Absolut nicht! Es war eher sprachlicher Natur, weil hier mein Alltagsenglisch erst mal nicht ausreichte. Nekromantie hat eben ihren eigenen Wortschatz und an den Schreibstil musste ich mich auch ein wenig gewöhnen. Nein, dieser ist nicht schlecht! Auf keinen Fall! Das Buch ist einfach NICHT banal daher geschrieben, sodass ich einfach ein wenig brauchte, um reinzukommen. Aber das ist nicht das Problem der Autorin, sondern meins, weil mein Englisch erst mal nicht ausreichte. Das Buch werde ich auf jeden Fall nochmal lesen und da bin ich mir absolut sicher, werde ich keine Schwierigkeiten mehr haben. Nichtsdestotrotz mochte ich den Schreibstil sehr, die beiden Protagonistinnen ebenso und auch einige weitere Charaktere und die Entwicklung der Geschichte. Ich wusste zwar in etwa, was mich erwarten würde, aber meine Erwartung wurde ziemlich übertroffen. Klar, man braucht ein paar Seiten, bis man sich in das Geschehen und in die Charaktere einliest. Alles ist doch ziemlich fremd und hat einen eigenen Hintergrund - wer kennt sich denn schon einfach so mit Nekromantie aus? Die Idee mit den verschiedenen Häusern und den unterschiedlichen Fähigkeiten der Häuser bezüglich der Nekromantie finde ich klasse. Aber das war etwas, was mich am Anfang ein wenig erschlagen hat, als die ganzen Charaktere aufeinander trafen - denn es sind nicht gerade wenige. Im Nachhinein dachte ich mir, dass mir evtl. ein paar Notizen geholfen hätten, wer nun zu welchem Haus und allgemein wer zu wem gehört. Am Anfang weiß man erst mal nicht viel. Erst peu à peu tastet man sich an das Geschehen heran und es werden Geheimnisse aufgedeckt. Ein wenig erinnert es mich an "Eine Leiche zum Dessert", denn auch da gibt es plötzlich Tote (unabhängig von den vielen laufenden Skeletten...) und es gilt herauszufinden, wer (oder was?) der Mörder ist, was die tatsächliche Aufgabe ist und ob es ein nächstes Opfer geben wird. Ich hatte wirklich meinen Spaß beim Lesen, obwohl ich immer wieder zum Wörterbuch greifen musste. Und ich habe es absolut genossen, wie sich Gideon und Harrow in der Geschichte entwickelten. Und das Ende... ach, ich freue mich jetzt schon auf den zweiten Teil :)
