I really tried to like it, but none of the characters caught my attention and I couldn't sympathise with any of them. Additionally I always felt like the book wanted to teach me a huge lesson how to live life, and everybody was just talking in riddles that were meant to carry a deep meaning but were actually so shallow and stupid I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. I know that there are many readers out there enjoying this book and the author put a lot of effort into it but personally I had to stop after 270 pages when I realised I don't care at all how this story ends.

This was a mix between Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and the Wrath and the Dawn, and I loved it! The second I hear that this book is going to involve indian folklore, I was all in for it! I've never read a YA book with an indian culture (arabian yes, but indian? Are there others? Let me know, I would love to read some more!!), but seeing one was fantastic, as my parents in law are actually from India! The cultural aspects and also clothing styles e.g. were woven perfectly into the story, which made this a great reading experience. At first, I was kind of hesitant, because there were some "love at first sight" things going on I didn't really like. However, the reason behind that was fantastic, and so clever! When I found out why there was an instant connection, I was just left speechless for a few minutes, as I did not expect that at all. I loved it! The main character of the book, Maya, she was so strong, with her own will, and I love strong female characters! She was no little girl in need of a man to rescue her, she was her own independent self, who stood up for her love, her people and herself. She quickly became one of my most favorite YA characters ever. But also the other characters were very interesting, and although some were side characters they still had many layers to them, which was so refreshing to see. The plot took such an unexpected twist, and I always love when I am surprised by a book. However, the ending was pretty satisfying, and now I saw that there will be more parts? YES, I am all in for that! Give me more of Amar and Maya!
