This is my first Emezi (definitely not my last), and even though my expectations were high, I wasn't disappointed. This is not an easy read, though, not to say a painful one. I'm not revealing anything when I say that the main character dies - it's in the title, after all. But the knowledge of this death makes any light, happy moments of the story bittersweet. Emezi's narrative style is empathetic, but never euphemistic. The changing narrators and the forms in which they come are chosen magnificently and add, in hindsight, another layer and new aspects to the constellation of characters as well as the story itself. Attentive readers will be able to foresee many aspects before they are confirmed, but they, of course, are condemned to watch helplessly. The only thing worse than this one is left with is that this fictional story is repeating itself over and over again, possibly daily, in reality, all across the globe.
