Travis Cornell stumbles upon a genetically engineered golden retriever, Einstein, exhibiting near-human intelligence, while hiking. The duo quickly develops a deep connection. Simultaneously, a menacing creature called The Outsider, another product of the same genetic engineering experiment but designed for destruction, escapes from the facility. As Travis and Einstein begin their new life, they encounter Nora Devon, who quickly becomes a pivotal part of their journey. The trio faces continual threats from The Outsider, intent on eliminating Einstein, and from government agents determined to recapture the escaped subjects. Throughout the novel, Travis and Nora collaborate to safeguard Einstein and counteract those who seek to exploit him, all while uncovering the enigmatic origins of these creations. Honestly, this was a rather silly book with numerous issues, such as the unexplained source of income for characters who seem to have no jobs, and the cringe-inducing romance between Travis and Nora. I also sensed subtly racist undertones from the author. After some research on Dean Koontz, I feel that he wrote this novel as a personal fantasy, projecting himself as the hero Travis, his wife as Nora, and his golden retriever as Einstein. This tendency of authors to mirror themselves in their protagonists can make the characterizations feel self-serving and less genuine. It often gives the impression that the authors are creating an idealized version of themselves, which can detract from the authenticity and depth of the narrative. Despite these points, I enjoyed parts of the book, particularly the beginning, though the ending was quite predictable and underwhelming. Unless you’re a die-hard dog lover, I wouldn’t really recommend this book.
