Forget the bible, this is the scripture now. Sheila Heti always just falls into my life and grips my heart with both hands like it's nothing. How dare she hurt me like that! How dare she touch me so deeply without a warning! How dare she, I hope she never stops! You have probably seen "Alphabetical Diaries" before because everybody and their mother is reading and loving it right now (a 4.2 star average goodreads rating really speaks for itself). Anf that is not only because Sheila Heti just is a genius writer (a topic which is not open for debate), but because this book captures the quintessential girlhood. If you are or ever have been a woman in her twenties and early thirties, you will find your experiences and thoughts between the pages of this book. I read this with two friends and we all felt so seen, so caught in the act of thinking our struggles, our thoughts and emotions were singular, were unique. Guess what: We're all the same, and Sheila Heti manages to boil down all our complex lives to 60.000 words and a neat, alphabetical structure. I will read this again. And again. And I am certain that I will continue to find new sentences every time, new sentences that will again feel like they were plucked right from my heart. 5/5 stars.
