I can already see glimpses of why this series is so beloved but I finally need to admid to myself that classic fantasy and quest fantasy just aren't for me. I like the concept of history repeating itself and how some fantasy tropes are done differently. Some of the characters are interesting and I feel they all have potential, but in this book they're still in the process of ascending from their archetypes. The little bits about consequences and how their experiences shape these people are pretty good, too. The writing style is mostly fun and engaging but so much could have been cut in my opinion. My biggest problem is just that I'm sick of stories that are just about going from A to B and the stuff that happens along the way. There are stories with this formula that I like but they need to be very strong on characters or other aspects and this book, in its general plot and execution, seems too much like other things I have read, though being a good version of it.
