Just a few thoughts on this novel: What I loved: - The concept of combining Norse and Inuit mythology in one book. - The gender conflict that Omat and them learning to see the value and power of a woman - The world was interesting (in some aspects). When the fantasy elements are excluded My experience: The story was a drag. I didn't feel the urge to continue reading. I really didn't like reading this book. If I was the type to DNF a book this would be on the list. I struggled to immerse myself in this world especially when the fantastical elements were introduced. I enjoyed it more when it was just Omat and with their family hunting, starving and telling stories. Would have preferred it more if the story focused on Kiasik's conflicted feelings regarding Omat and the rest of the family. The realistic part of the story and the fantasy elements just didn't gel for me. The relationship with Brandr felt shoehorned in. I don't know or understand why and how they fell in love. It just felt off to me; or maybe too sudden? I feel that anytime the "gods" are at work manipulating situations behind the scenes, the character work starts to suffer. I didnt undertand any of the character motivations - if there were any. Maybe Omat a bit since they were the main character. But even that was limited in my opinion.
