Langweilig.

This book was nice enough but ultimately just didn't work for me. At first I thought this was gonna be a love letter to romance novels, which as a reader of romance novels excited me. Two narrators of romance audio books, mistaken identities, I was so excited to start this book and at the beginning it was just lovely. But the further I got towards the end, the more the characters keep insisting that oh no they are not in a romance novel, because romance novels are unrealistic and its just not that easy in real life. No, they keep saying, I dont want us to feel like we are in a romance novel, we feel real. Having the character who's a romance novel author being a contrary super-feminist who held real men to an impossibly high standard and always saw wrong with them also rubbed me the wrong way in this context. I felt like I was reading a romance novel that kept insisting it was better than other romance novels because it was more real, which was a shame honestly because I loved the setup for this so much. I think ultimately, and I say that as someone who spent the last 5 years as close to living a romance novel as possible - meetcute and everything included - I felt that the authoe just views romance novels fundamentally different from the way I do which led to this one just not hitting the spot for me. I'm honestly not even sure if this was in the right place on the romance recommendations lists or if its more general contemporary fiction (me and the author do share a derision for the term women's lit).

This was a solid fiction book about romance, self-love and actually being yourself. I liked the characters and rooted for them and had fun seeing how the relationship develops. It was also cool to learn about the audiobook narrator world a bit more. So this was a solid fun read for me and listening to it as audiobook is I think for a book about audiobooks the best way.

wow. simply wow. This was meaningful. Romantic. Hilarious. I had such a great time listening to this. I can’t think of a single flaw in this book. It has just as many rom com aspects that give you smiles and giggles and laughs, as it has important moments with realization about identity, grieve, acceptance and so much more. And those two balance each other out perfectly. From the leads to every single side character - everyone was real and no one acted annoyingly immature or unrealistic. And don’t get me started on the concept - two audiobook narrators? secret identity? To sum this up - I had a blast listening to this boon which btw is narrated FLAWLESSLY by the author herself. I also believe this book needs to be listened to not read. It’s a audiobook kinda story. And let’s be honest - yes I stan the main character but the true hero was the grandma and the author who caused the story to begin. Go read this if you want a hilarious entertaining romance with some deeper messages and all the fluffy and sad and happy feelings. 5
