"Rich people problems. Ruby says they manage to make everything into a drama because when you have no real difficulty in your life you end up creating your own." Lucy Foley is known for her mastery of multi-POV narratives, but it took me a little time to get into the story. Initially, I shrugged it off, thinking it might be a slow burn. At least it doesn't have as many characters as "Guest List," so I figured I would be able to grasp the main story around the mysterious victim's identity. It did pick up speed and in the end all the pieces tie into each other, but in a very obvious way. It just wasn't thrilling for me. It felt like every character was designed to be a plot twist, but they were all thrown in there to be overtly twisty. The atmosphere felt rich, dangerous, hedonistic, and a bit pagan in nature. It toes the line into Folk Horror territory. The incorporation of folklore, particularly the legend of the Birds, blended nicely into the main mystery, where locals fight for justice against the invasion of the filthy-rich Zenith community. The diary entries were a nice addition, but my favorite part were the after chapters, which brought the story full circle. It was not my favorite Lucy Foley read, but Inlive this author and am excited for her next book.
