Wow, what a fantastic book this was! I just couldn't stop reading, because it was so much fun and I had a blast. The character work is great! Nevada and her family captured my heart instantly. It's full of strong and interesting characters (especially strong female characters, Queens all around). It's everything I want from an urban fantasy: you got all the fantasy stuff, a really interesting magic system (that is more on the "hard" side, but really easy to understand), an urban city and a ton of guns. And it is a great mystery-story, that really got me invested. The writing is great. It's easy to get into the book and it stays easy to read, it was an absolute comfort read for me. It's easy, it's funny, it's comfort, it's full of romantic tension but that's not to say the stakes weren't high, because they are. I want to give a quick side note on Mad Rogan. I got really tired of toxic characters in the last years. Not to say they are a bad general - just that I got bored of the concept. I was really concerned about that starting the book, but Mad Rogan is somehow different. I can't really explain it but I really liked him and the tension here. Overall this is a fun ride with all the emotions, interesting and strong characters, an interesting mystery with all the urban fantasy. I can't wait to read more from Nevada and from Ilona Andrews in general!

Okay so I picked this up not expecting much, but wow, Ilona Andrews really said let me world-build an entire alternate Houston with magic dynasties and hereditary powers and a whole society that makes sense with no info dumping. Nevada Baylor is the kind of heroine I actually root for: competent, loyal to her chaotic family, not doing anything stupid for a man, and then there’s Mad Rogan, who is a walking red flag wrapped in telekinetic power and a billionaire aesthetic, and yet somehow the slow-burn tension between them had me in a chokehold the entire time. The negative? The romance does take a backseat to the plot in book one, and if you go in expecting spice you will be humbled, but the unresolved tension is genuinely so delicious it almost hits harder. Can’t wait to continue!

MEINUNG: YEEEES!! Genau eine Geschichte meines Geschmacks. Eine gut durchdachte Magie-Struktur. Man bekommt nicht alles zum Morgenkaffe serviert, sondern wir werden Stück für Stück in dieses System eingeführt. Es gibt Familien -sogenannte Häuser - die mehr Magie besitzen. Die Häuser werden gut beschrieben, wenn es in der Story nötig ist und nicht alles auf einmal. 🩵😊 Wir lernen Nevada kennen. Sie besitzt eine kleine Familienfirma, die man anheuern kann, wenn man einen Detektiv braucht. Nevada gefiel mir von Anfang an. Sie ist mutig, kann sich aber auch eingestehen, wenn eine Sache zu groß für sie ist. Ich war sofort Feuer und Flamme. Ihre Familie ist so liebenswert und ein wenig verrückt ... Würde mich sofort zu ihnen an den Küchentisch sitzen 😉😁 Nevada muss einen Auftrag annehmen, ansonsten verliert sie alles. Von Beginn an ist ihr bewusst, dass dies eine Nummer zu hoch ist, aber sie hat keine Wahl. Somit begegnet sie unfreiwillig Mad (Connor) Rogan. Sie lernen zusammen zu arbeiten und sein trockener, zweideutiger und dunkler Humor hat mich sofort in seinen Bann gezogen. Der Plot ist der Wahnsinn. Es ist bereits ab dem ersten Kapitel pure Spannung vorhanden und das Knistern zwischen den beiden Protagonisten ist das Sahnehäubchen 🥰🤭 Ich konnte mein E-Book keine Sekunde aus der Hand geben. Klare Leseempfehlung von mir und dieser erste Band zählt definitiv zu meinen Highlights heuer. Werde nun sofort zu Teil 2 greifen. I have read a few books within the urban fantasy genre which I enjoyed, but this my favourite.What the book is aboutNevada Baylor is a private investigator with Baylor Investigations, which is run by her family. Unfortunately, the business is facing financial challenges and as a result; it was mortgaged to the hilt. The company who holds the mortgage issued an order for her to take on an assignment, which may or may not lead to her death. She had no choice but to accept the assignment as failure to do so would lead to the loss of the business and her family home.In the midst of the chaos, she is kidnapped by Mad Rogan, a man who was rich, powerful and feared by all whom he came in contact with. They are both after the same target, so working together seemed the logical thing to do. However, their unexpected partnership will lead to them discovering things about themselves and developing feelings they never thought was possible with each other.What I enjoyedSuperb Writing: The manner in which the story was presented made me feel as if I was a part of the story. I loved he uniqueness of the setting and the premise. The story is set in a world that is similar to ours, with one main difference, magic. In the 1800s, a serum was developed that gave humans magical powers and since that time magic has reigned supreme. Years later, you have a world where some humans have interesting and unique powers. There were those whose powers were stronger than the norm who are called primes.Delightful Characters: Nevada is a strong, brave, honest, kick-ass heroine. From the moment I was introduced to her, I knew I would love her. She cares deeply for her family and would do anything to protect them. She is not the type to behave like a damsel in distress. While working on this case she would come to realise that there is more to her powers than she originally believed.Conner Rogan AKA Mad Rogan is a formidable and complex man. He was former military and a trained killer. He has no qualms about killing when the need arises. However, I soon came to realize that underneath all that craziness lay a heart of compassion. Few were privy to this side of him.I loved every moment spent with the supporting cast of characters. I loved how Nevada’s family had her back. They had a bond that was stronger than any magic. It is rare for me to like the villain in a story, but this time around, I could not help but like Adam. He was cocky and entitled, but there was something about him that I found endearing.Fun and entertaining story: There was tons of action, and thrilling moments to keep me on my toes. It moved quickly sparing me no time to be bored. There was humour to help lighten the heavy moments. There was loads of sexual tension permeating the pages of this story, but there was no intimacy and no romance. Not that I am complaining. It is evident that there is an attraction there, but with all what was happening there would have been no to explore their feelings for each other. I am curious to discover how this aspect of the story will eventually play out.I was happy with the ending. Thankfully, it was not a cliff-hanger. The situation in this instance was adequately wrapped up, however, there was a shocking revelation in the epilogue which left me with questions. Thankfully I am able to proceed to next book in the series right away so my questions will be answered soon.VerdictOverall, this is a great read and one, which I highly recommend. Mir fehlen echt die Worte. Ich habe schon lange kein so grandioses, fulminantes und atemberaubenden Buch mehr gelesen. Als ich das Buch angefangen habe, hatte ich nicht wirklich Lust, aber ich musste dringend den ersten Abschnitt für eine Leserunde lesen und dann ging es rasant los und es hat mich bis zum Ende mitgerissen, zum Seinen und Schreien gebracht und genau solche Reaktionen soll eine Geschichte bei mir auslösen!!! Nevada und Rogan waren fantastische Charaktere mit vielen Ecken und Kanten, sie hatten es auch zuvor nicht immer leicht, aber sie lassen sich dennoch nicht unterkriegen. Sie sind stark, können sich durchsetzen und ihre Dialoge sind gleichzeitig prickelnd, unterhaltsam und haben einen mehr Wert. Alles in dieser Geschichte hatte einen Sinn und wurde mit vielen actiongeladenen Szenen meisterhaft kombiniert. Auch die Nebencharaktere konnte ich ins Herz schließen. In vielen anderen Geschichte bleiben diese blass, aber hier sind sie toll ausgearbeitet und ich konnte sie mir sehr gut vorstellen. Die Handlung war wie ein Fluss. Es gab viele wilde und ungezähmte Szenen mit Action, Energie, Magie, Blut und Gewalt und dann gab es wieder herzallerliebste Familienszenen zwischen Nevada und ihrer Familie, die auch nicht ohne ist und durchaus in der Lage und gewillt ist für Nevada einzutreten.  Ich könnte noch Seitenweise über dieses Buch schwärmen...Auch die Atmosphäre und das Ende haben mir sehr gut gefallen und ich konnte das Buch nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Zum Glück habe ich mir alle drei Teile in Englisch gekauft, wer kann denn da noch abwarten ;) Wenn es bisher nicht deutlich genug wird...lest dieses Buch!!!!!!
